re: K/S, should there be a section about pro novels that helped steer fans in that direction? Things like Roddenberry's footnote in the ST:TMP novelization where he tells the fans that no, really "t'hyla" means "friend or brother" and absolutely positively not "lover", which had the effect of making innocent little me go, "... OH! Oh, wow, yeah!" Heh. And then the Marshak and Culbreath Phoenix books, "Surprise!" from New Voyages II... (hey, I didn't have access to fanfic at the time. I just reread all of those things. A lot. *g*)

Also, should this be going under Star Trek, or Star Trek/The Original Series? --Arduinna 02:46, 3 October 2008 (UTC)

I was wondering too - it seems more logical to me (ahem) to have all the TOS information under Star Trek/The Original Series, and to have the main Star Trek page be just an overview of all the series and movies. Otherwise it could get confusing. Also, yes, let us please talk about the pro novels that had an impact on fandom and fanon! The footnote in ST:TMP is such a classic. --Mary Crawford 20:48, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
My only push back about this is I want LESS CANON, MORE FANON, and therefore, I'm against having the big overview pages that people see first, spent on canon. But I hear you that maybe all of this information needs to be organized differently.Sherrold 00:10, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
I think K/S needs it's own page. There is an incredible amount of history there. Decades. All for the fanon, but you can have an overview of the fanon on the front page with more specifics on sub pages or other pages. --elgraves 04:41, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
I have now created a Kirk/Spock page and moved everything K/S related there!--Mary Crawford 20:04, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
And Della Van Hise's novel "Killing Time" that was reissued in a new edition, because the first one was too slashy.--Nestra 21:02, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
I guess we don't need a whole article on that footnote. But hey, commentary from 1997: http://www.alternateuniverses.com/judygran/footnote.txt by Judith Gran. -- Kdcat 21:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)
Oh, that is fabulous! We definitely need to at least link to it. --Arduinna 00:17, 4 October 2008 (UTC)

Quit talkin' and get writin', girls! I agree with everything here. (parenthetically -- I'd look at the Talk page on the 2nd, no one had chimed in yet, so I didn't look again until today, when there's all this interesting stuff. Is there some way to know that the Talk page has info?)Sherrold 00:09, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Sherrold 00:10, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

Press the 'watch' tab and this will go on your watch list. Which means: you will see it in bold on recent changes, and when you press the 'my watchlist' menu item at the top-right menubar, you will see a summary of all of your watched pages that you can click on to read. --rache 00:15, 7 October 2008 (UTC)
Ah ha! It hadn't occurred to me to put TALK pages on my watch list. Consider it added.

Re the zine Thrust: "anyone have a scan of this?" --> I have the zine, and I don't have a scanner but I could surely take a photo of it. I'd love to have more zine covers, especially of the older zines. --Mary Crawford 10:44, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

That'd be awesome. I'd really like to get some of the zine covers at least up. Kyuuketsukirui has made a start of it on some yaoi zine covers, I seem to remember seeing. --Betty 20:41, 13 October 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I was wrong - I have a *copy* of the zine, and it doesn't include the cover. Woe. But I did photograph the covers of some of the other early zines where I do have originals, and will be uploading those later today.--Mary Crawford 14:01, 15 October 2008 (UTC)

One of the things I always found fascinating about the Star Trek fandom was the really blurry line between fannon and cannon, and "official" series/movies/books/etc. and fan-made products. Should there be some sort of discussion on the page, or is it covered sufficiently in Fan Fic or Pro Fic (I don't think it is)?--Sari (talk) 16:44, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

What to do with names?

How are we going to deal with naming zine authors and illustrators? I think it's important to give credit, and I've named a couple of well-known K/S authors (Syn Ferguson, for one) who are still using their fannish names on the web. But I don't want to out anyone, either, Zeus forbid.

In many cases, older zine authors/illustrators don't have an on-line presence or have left fandom entirely, so it's not easy to gain permission. I'm not sure how many fans chose to use their real names back in the day, either.

The immensely useful K/S zine database that was distributed with the "Legacy" zines uses first names and last initial only (Syn F, Gayle F, etcetera).--Mary Crawford 10:44, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

I like that idea. (Grr. I wish it wasn't so hard to change the titles of pages, because if, Gayle for example, is named Gayle F, then her user page will be Gayle F, and if she shows up (she's around, still-ish; she sent a vid to Escapade a couple of years ago) and says, "use my last name", then we need to move the page.)
Okay, I found Syn's last web page -- although now broken, it has her last name, and her trek stories, so I will put Ferguson back up. On the other hand, Gayle clearly uses just Gayle F on the web.

Need to compare and contrast this with the Wikipedia K/S page

And probably start breaking this page into sub pages. Sherrold 15:54, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, agreed, and it's probably time to start the Kirk/Spock pairing mainpage, instead of directing it to "Trek"?

Another thing: I've started an overview of K/S zines: Kirk/Spock_Zines with the aim of making separate zine pages for noted zines.--Mary Crawford 16:05, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Which is fabulous, btw! I don't think I said that when I was carping about the dates... Sherrold 16:38, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
  • grins* Thanks! I didn't see it as carping, no worries - I wanted to add dates too, but had no idea that a sortable table thingy was *possible*, so your pointer was very helpful. --Mary Crawford 06:47, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

Bizarre dialogue punctuation markers?

So, apparently the first instance of marking telepathy with // is in ST, and I'd like to have some sort of article on, you know {{means action}}, @@means text messaging@@, $$means telepathy$$ encodings like you sometimes used to see in story headers, but I'm not sure what the article would be titled. --Betty 18:35, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

List Subpages template chaged

I'm set it up so that the main parent page is not listed on the pathname. Let me know if this causes an issue, as it does clean up the listings for those with a lot of subpages plus the pairings stand out more clearly. --rache 21:52, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Disambiguation

I think the disambiguation line could be removed because the two links listed there are Trek zines and as such listed on the fanzine page. --Doro 20:23, 1 January 2010 (UTC)

I think this is inconvenient and wrong. If for some reason I end up on this page knowing there is a zine called "Star Trek" how exactly am I supposed to get to the right place? If I hit go, I end up here or rather if I enter "Star Trek zine" I'm redirected to the zine subpage. I don't see a disambiguation either on the main page or the zine subpage, so no direct links, so I find links to the subseries pages, so to find the zine I have to either click and search five pages, or I have to know already for which series these are, but what if I'm usure? Maybe I just heard story X was published in that zine and want to find out for what subseries it was. So I'm try the next thing, and don't hit "go" but "search" this time for "Star Trek zine" only of course that does not help either because of our naming scheme, because you get a gazillion title hits.--RatCreature 22:18, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Huh. When I look for a Star Trek zine called Star Trek and I end up on the Star Trek page, I know I'm in the right place and look under fanzines. Seems intuitive to me. If you don't think so, feel free to change it back. I don't feel strongly about it. --Doro 22:36, 10 January 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I'd be with you in that in principle, and thought the same thing in other fandoms where a fandom title doubled as zine title, but for those there was one zine list to look through, and you saw it linked further down the page or directly on the subpage. The problem for me here starts in that on the zine subpage there are just links to other pages, none of them a zine called Star Trek. So you have five pages to search. So I'd like to link the two zines again, either on top of the main or on top of the Fanzines subpage.--RatCreature 07:06, 11 January 2010 (UTC)

Pairing information

I think the pairing information for TNG, VOY, DS9 is too specific and not really needed here. My impression is that this is one of the pages where the focus should be more on context than on specific content, like first CoC Trek lead, first woman Trek lead, etc. --Doro 10:57, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

Okay. My approach so far was to take the main point the specific pages make about the canon, and the main point they make about the fandom and put them here as starting point. But I'm not against removing this to put better overview stuff in. I just mostly wanted to prevent the blank page anxiety that happens when nothing at all is there. I never really was in any of those fandoms, though I did wonder why Janeway/Seven wasn't more prominent on the VOY page, because aside from Chakotay/Paris that was the major VOY ship I've ever noticed by Osmosis of being in fandom elsewhere at the same time.--RatCreature 11:07, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

subpage for all-series inclusive LJ comms?

should a list of LJ comms that are not series specific become a subpage of the main Star Trek now?--RatCreature 20:36, 3 January 2010 (UTC)

disambiguation idea

If there are several other things known as Star Trek, maybe we should create a Star Trek (Disambiguation) page and link to it from here.--æthel 00:05, 24 July 2010 (UTC)

works for me. like I said above, I just want the zines findable by their names too, without having to comb several Star Trek zine lists.--RatCreature 08:29, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Images

This page needs some images to perk it up. Any takers? --Mrs. Potato Head 18:59, 2 July 2011 (UTC)

Fan Productions

We should include fan made series/films too right? Like ST:Phase II, etc? Should that have it's own page? --Shivohn Songbreeze 02:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Is there some sort of listing of all major fan series/films? Should there be?--Sari (talk) 06:04, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
There is Fan Film, but it is very brief (sadly). There are enough ST fan films for the topic to have its own page. And likewise, each ST fan film could have its own page as well. --MPH (talk) 13:30, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Praise

Excerpts from chat 23.11.2012: "Nic: Was just cruising the wiki and astounded at the amount of updates since the last time I was here! It's very impressive. :D [I was looking at] Mostly the history of Star Trek (and K/S) I think I have lost about 3 days reading this stuff. (I started Monday.) LOL, this site will become as dangerous as TV Tropes soon. Well thank you guys for the amazing work. :)" --Tiyire 23:54, 22 November 2012 (UTC)

Star Trek Call-In Radio Show (Orphaned Pages)

Hello! I came across Talk Trek in the Orphaned Pages and thought it might be of interest to you, as I imagine call-in radio shows centered around a specific media fandom were not that common at least in the US? Certainly I don't recall any in the height of my Midwestern-ish radio experience in the 1980s. Linking here because I thought editors more familiar with the ST fandom might know best where to place it. WhitedSepu (talk) 08:04, 18 August 2022 (UTC)

Oooh, interesting. I found out a little more about this show and added info. I also corrected the title. --MPH (talk) 14:03, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
