Con Reports

On September 1-3, 1979, the annual fall Star Trek convention was held at the New York Stabler (formerly the Stabler Hilton) Hotel. The hotel's new management wanted the convention about as much as person would want the plague, and they went to great lengths to prove it. The registration line was moved several times in order to avoid having the fans seen by the "normal" clientele. Unfortunately for the hotel, there are very few places in the world where you can effectively hide over 5,000 people.

Guests at the convention included Isaac Asimov, Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, and Angelique Pettyjohn, who appeared as Shana in the Trek episode, The Gamesters of Triskelion.

Of course, the main focus of the con was Star Trek: The Motion Picture, so naturally the most exciting celebrity was Jesco von Puttkamer of NASA, who was the technical advisor on the film. Each of his slide shows was so packed, people were actually turned away.

Other than that, September Con '79 was its usual boring self.

Hopefully the next convention will be better, it will be held after the Star Trek movie opens, and perhaps that will add a new life to what has come to be a very boring three days. [1]
