Rei is a playable character in Pokémon Legends: Arceus (PLA), released in 2022. He gets focus in many fanworks, though less so than his female counterpart Akari. He is seen as a spiritual successor to Lucas, who was originally introduced in 2006's Pokémon Diamond and Pearl. Some fans may consider them to be the same person, though this is only fanon.

Protagonist or Assistant?
In most fanworks, Rei is considered to be Professor Laventon's assistant, with Akari being the main character. In Pokémon Masters EX, however, he is the "canon" protagonist while Akari is the professor's assistant.
- As noted by Adaman, despite Lucas and Dawn bearing resemblance to Rei and Akari, their mannerisms are completely different. This may imply that Rei is not, in fact, Lucas brought to the Hisui region from the future. However, their differing personalities may be a result of Rei's milieu having an effect on his character, or simply a result of his amnesia.
