The Maggie Awards were created by Alara Rogers to recognise excellence in Magneto-centric fanfic. It only ran for one year - 1999.

As I've noted in the past, Alara's Magneto Page is not a terribly exclusive site. I try to archive or link to every Magneto story on the net, unless it's bad enough to belong in the Hall of Shame. So stories which are actually of higher than average quality have had nothing to set them aside, until now. Rather than use my personal opinions only, I recruited volunteers on the Magneto Mailing List to help me out with the Maggie Awards for high-quality Magneto fanfic. The purpose of the awards is to highlight what we, the panelists, think you'd enjoy reading. The way we picked the awards was this: each panelist gave 1, 2 or 3 points to a story they liked. The points were added up for four panelists. No panelist was allowed to vote for her own stories.

The 1999 Maggie Awards, Alara's Now Rather Spiffy Magneto Page

The judging panel comprised of Alara, Dandelion, Sigil, and Carrie and there were a number of "levels" of award, based on how many points each judge assigned each fanfic. Only fanfics published before January 1999 were considered - the plan was to hold the awards again in 2000 to consider 1999 fics, but this does not appear to have occured.

In order of importance, from biggest to smallest award, [the awards] were: The Gamma Ray Award (3 were given out), the X-Ray Award (13 were given out), the Ultraviolet Award (47 were given out) and the Visible Light Award (15 were given out).

Winners

Visible Light (all links via Wayback)

  • Circles by Tapestry. Four Gen-X characters, including Dawn, the original character heroine of the Dawn Arc, are sent back in time to the New Mutants, when Magneto was headmaster.
  • Clothes Maketh The Mutant by Jaelle and Orla. Joseph has nothing to wear, so Rogue takes him shopping. He will live to regret this...
  • The Damned Have No Right To Weep by Alara Rogers. A companion piece to "Innocent Heart, Guilty Memories" by Melodist, written in response to it. Magneto faces his own role in the events of "Innocent Heart", and the consequences.
  • Daughter of the Sun by Dawn Bobby. An AOA tale in which Sabretooth and Magneto come into conflict over a woman Creed trusts and Erik doesn't.
  • Don't Feed Her After Midnight by Jaelle and Orla. Joseph makes the mistake of letting Rogue pig out on sugar. Humor.
  • Forbidden Love by Chris Delaney. The dead past resurrects itself in a Danger Room session as Joseph finds himself possessed by his former identity. Jean Grey offers to enter his mind and purge the remnants of Magneto, and finds that things are more complex than she had wished to believe.
  • Leader's Lessons by Leary. Much to his dismay, Sam is asked by Cyclops to train the amnesiac "Joseph" in the use of his powers.
  • The Long Trail by [D. M. Lasher]. In an alternate universe where Charles Xavier never formed the X-Men, the mutant run republic of Avalon is locked in a desperate war with the nation Genosha. Now, as enemies within and without conspire to destroy Avalon, the aging Erik Magnus Lehnsherr (Magneto) must sacrifice everything to save the nation that he loves.
  • Meadow-X by Sabia. Bloom County has crossed over with the X-Men, and no one's life will be the same. Humor.
  • Mutants 'R Us by Mercutio and Jane of Shadows. Magneto comes to Xavier for help, and Charles makes an offer Magnus can't refuse. Consensual m/m. Adult.
  • Too Many Alternate Futures by Jaelle and Orla. Much to everyone's chagrin, Joseph and Rogue discover that Joseph isn't Magneto-- he's really Baby Charles from the AOA. Which makes Rogue... his MOM! But it gets worse... Humor.
  • Revolution by Northlight. Set in the same universe as "Another Day, Another Debate", approximately fifty or sixty years earlier. Erik was getting Charles into trouble even when they were in elementary school. Humor.
  • Subreality Cafe: No Smoking In The Subreality Cafe: by Diamonde. Part of the Subreality Cafe series. Joseph and several other "mainstream" characters gripe about their fates. Humor.
  • Somebody Said I Love You by GLAMbeau. Joseph returns to Magneto's citadel in Antarctica to rescue Remy, and becomes entangled in a hopelessly complicated web of love and hate. Adult slashfic-- contains consensual male/male sex.
  • X-Clave I: Discovery by Margaret O'Quinn. The X-Men get three new members, right around the time of Illyana's last days of life from the Legacy Virus. Magneto first appears in Chp. Three, but has a large role thereafter.

Ultraviolet (all links via Wayback)

  • Age of Apocalypse: Bundle of Joy by Jaelle and Orla. Rogue and Erik are going to be parents! Why isn't Erik happy about it?... Humor. (link via Wayback)
  • As It Must To All Men by Northlight. A reporter interviews various people about Magneto's death.
  • Ashes In The Wind by Chris Delaney. The Shadow King has decimated the X-Men. Magneto, Xavier and Excalibur all separately prepare to face him. But misunderstandings, old hatreds and betrayals may set the three factions at each others' throats before they ever get near the Shadow King... Rated R for violence.
  • At Home With The Mutant Menace by Alara Rogers. XXY Universe. A day in the life of the Mutant Menace, the counterpart to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in the XXY genderswap universe. This story will probably make no sense if you don't visit the XXY page first. "Polaris" is the XXY version of Magneto.
  • The Bloody Morning After by Rebecca Teed. Sequel to "Rubicon". Magneto, Blink, Sabretooth and the Acolytes are trying to rebuild Avalon into a viable nation in space. Meanwhile, Charles Xavier is convinced that Magneto isn't Magneto... because the real psyche of Magneto is being held prisoner in his own head.
  • Burning Bridges by Alicia McKenzie. After nearly killing Cable, Magneto considers why.
  • A Companion Picture by Dandelion. Sequel to "Drawn to the Lodestone Rock." Magnus and Remy set off on a quest to find Magnus' past and escape Remy's present. Meanwhile, X-Factor is coming under fire from the government that created it.
  • Complex by Indigo. In the wake of the battle with the Shadow King (and in an alternate universe where Joseph didn't leave the team in XM #73), Storm and Joseph separately face their demons, until an accident that may well have profound repercussions for them both occurs.
  • Confusing the Issue by Mercutio. Gambit and Joseph are both having problems with wanting Rogue and being unable to have her, until the two decide to work together. Consensual m/m, m/f, m/f/m.
  • Crawling Between Heaven And Earth: by Breanna Mac. Charles Xavier is rescued by the X-Men from his captivity by Bastion, but he appears to be broken inside. It would spoil things to reveal Magneto's role, but he's in it, trust me.
  • Crimes of the Heart by Indigo. Storm returns to Antarctica to rescue Remy post UXM #350, while the X-Men try to get on with their lives... until a much greater threat draws them all back together. Joseph is an important secondary character in this story.
  • A Day's Work by Tilman Stieve. Tales of the Twilight Menshevik series. A conference on metahumans in Europe draws all sorts of folks. Magneto is just one character in this large cast.
  • The Death of a Dream by Onyx. Two years ago all the telepaths were killed and most of the X-Men fell in battle to the Shadow King, possessing Magneto's body. Rogue, who sold her soul for the ability to control her power, and Gambit, who seeks redemption by working with the remains of the X-Men to infiltrate the Shadow King's Brotherhood, are the main characters in this story. Magneto has been kind of amalgamated into the Shadow King, and counts as the villain, sort of.
  • Denouement by Kielle. The sequel to Resolutions. Joseph isn't having any of Remy's planned practical joke. Humor.
  • Drawn to the Lodestone Rock by Dandelion. An amnesiac Erik Magnus Lehnsherr comes to the X-Men in search of his past, and finds an unlikely ally in Remy LeBeau.
  • The Experiment #713 series by Lori McDonald. Magneto appears in the stories "The Gift" and "Ash"; however, you really should read the whole thing from the beginning on, as a. it's very good b. it won't make sense if you don't. A mutant experiment of Sinister's escapes and takes up residence in the Morlock tunnels, too frightened to come out into the light or accept the X-Men's friendship. The series follows his slow path back to recovery.
  • A Fanficrific Halloween by Doc Nuke. Magneto is having a bad Halloween. Humor. Includes a South Park crossover. Guess how Kenny will die!
  • Funky Attractions by Funky M. What if UXM #304 were written as if all the characters were on crack? (You mean they weren't?) Parody.
  • Good Friends by Sigil. An interlude in Israel turns into something neither Magnus nor Charles quite expected. Contains m/m sexual explorations; follow link through Adult page.
  • Happy Hanukah by Jaya Mitai. In an alternate universe where Magda never left him, Erik Lehnsherr celebrates Hanukah and the birth of his son.
  • Heroes And Villains by Jon A. Bartley. Every Friday at 8 PM, Charles Xavier goes off to meet a friend for drinks.
  • How Did Magneto Knock Up Rogue? by Abyss. A silly post from racmx. The Chef from South Park explains the existence of Baby Charles, musically. Humor.
  • Lights In the Dark by Tilman Stieve. Tales of the Twilight Menshevik series. Another in the series. Various mutants celebrate Hanukah/Christmas.
  • A Match Made...? by Jaelle and Orla. An alternate version of Rogue and Joseph's first meeting up with other superheroes. Humor.
  • The Mother Of All Retcons by Alara Rogers. A pregnant Lorna Dane escapes from Sinister and flees smack into the middle of an enormous plot complication. Humor. Magneto's appearance is small.
  • Neon Hearts: by Susan Crites. A romance between Hank and a new character named Cassie. Joseph appears around chp. 32 or so, and is much better handled than in Marvel's stuff.
  • Not With A Bang or a Whimper by Lori McDonald. Billions of people ceased to exist when the Age of Apocalypse ended. Now, their spirits want closure. Joseph and the ghost of the AOA Magneto both appear in this story.
  • Of Moons And Men by Jaya Mitai. A sequel to "Happy Hanukah." Magda must try to save her marriage, and her husband's soul.
  • Onslaught: Redemption: by Swpwarrior. How Onslaught should have happened.
  • A Pound of Flesh by Indigo. Sequel to "Crimes of the Heart." Joseph is a character in this story.
  • Powderkeg by Alara Rogers. POWER SWAP CHALLENGE. Suppose it had been Magda, not Erik, who had the powers?
  • Preludes by Alicia C. In the wake of Magda's abandonment, Erik Lehnsherr seeks a damning form of solace.
  • Resolutions by Kielle. Remy finally insists on hashing out with Rogue where he and she stand vis-a-vis the Joseph situation. Humor.
  • The Resurrection Gauntlet by Onyx. Sequel to "The Death of a Dream". The survivors of "Death of a Dream"'s climactic battle try to rebuild the world and bring about peace.
  • Revenant by Alara Rogers. You think Joseph is bad? It could be worse... much, much worse.
  • The Savage Land Saga by Chris Delaney for the X-Writers. The Shadow King has taken over Magneto's mindless body, and with the rest of the X-Men gone offworld, it's up to Professor X, Jean Grey and Wolverine to stop him... and they get trashed in the first chapter. Not rated, but contains violence and a lot of disturbing stuff. Not for kiddies.
  • Scars by RubyLis. The sequel to "End of Innocence." Magneto only appears in "Scars", but that will make little sense if you don't read "End of Innocence" first. After Gambit is left for months in a Genoshan concentration camp, Rogue and the X-Men attempt to help him recover, with the aid of Erik Lehnsherr's experience. Contains mature themes.
  • Steel Aurora by Jenn The Ice Raptoress. A human woman who befriends a mutant girl becomes obsessed with Magneto. Adult, includes graphic heterosexual sex between two consenting adults.
  • The Time The Twain Shall Meet by Tilman Stieve. Sequel to "A Day's Work." Hawk, Dove and a few other DC characters end up in the Marvel universe. Again, a cast of many, one of which is Magneto, who is having a relationship with Rogue. Mature themes.
  • Tombstone by Kaylee. A man visits an old friend's grave.
  • Tug O'War by Dandelion. Magneto is guest star on a game show where opposing deities compete to win mortals' souls. Humor.
  • Twilight by Chris Delaney. An old man is confronted by a young woman about his actions at the end of the war. Either Magneto's the main character or a secondary character, but you'll just have to read it and decide for yourself...
  • Twin Poles by Alara Rogers. Joseph is an amnesiac X-Man struggling with the distrust of his teammates, and guilt over the terrorist past he's been told about but cannot remember. Magnus is a former Nazi hunter recovering from a mindwipe that's taken several years of his life from him, and he, too, is struggling with the guilt of a terrorist past he cannot remember. One of them is Magneto... and the other is not. But with the stakes their very souls, can either of them believe in, or learn to trust, the other? And can the world afford for them not to?
  • Uncanny X-Men: Issue 330 Written by Andrew W for the X-Writers. Magneto, dying of the Legacy Virus, comes to Westchester to confront Charles Xavier.
  • X-Men/Wacky Races Amalgam: by Innocent bystander and Masked Goon. The title explains it all. Funny even if you barely remember Wacky Races. Magneto's role is very small, but memorable.
  • Yishuv by Arthur-Trevor D. M. Lasher. Set in the same universe as the In-Between Days series, but ten years later, this is the story of Magneto's struggle to create a mutant homeland through (mostly) above-board political means.
  • Your Way by Samy M. Lee Forrester is murdered. Magneto investigates, and X-Force, hearing of the situation, move to intercept before things get ugly...

X-Ray

Gamma Ray

  • Devil's Diary by Dark Mark. Magneto's journal in the months immediately preceding Cape Citadel.
  • Kid Dynamo by Connie H. The classic New Mutants story, now available on the Web. Jessica Pierce, teenage telekinetic fireproof runaway, is rescued by Magneto and the New Mutants, and offered a place at the school. It would be a dream come true, except that Jessica hates Magneto and blames him for the death of her mother.
  • Shelter from the Storm by Sequoia S. Adult. In the original Dark Phoenix storyline, Jean was supposed to have her powers removed by the Shi'ar. A followup story would have had Magneto offering her her powers back in exchange for her joining him. She would have refused him, of course. What if she didn't? Contains m/f sex.

  • "Child's Play": Alice Aldridge. 16 pages. Celestial Toybox 8. After the deaths of Doug Ramsey and the X-Men, the New Mutants are taking their pain out on Magneto and he's taking his out on them. It all comes to a head when a supposed "training" session goes seriously wrong and nearly kills Magneto-- and Moira thinks it was a suicide attempt.
  • "A Knight of Ghosts and Shadows": Alice Aldridge. 27 pages. Celestial Toybox 9. Magneto is summoned away from his battle with the Avengers to attend the birth of his twins by Lee Forrester, and to protect them from the cruel designs of the Shadow King.
  • "Cannonball Express: Dangerous Crossing": Alice Aldridge. 22 pages. Celestial Toybox 10. Magneto has taken control of Genosha. Fearing for his sanity, Lee hides her children and flees. Misunderstandings leave the two of them vulnerable to the machinations of D'Spayre... A review of this story is on this site.
  • "The Hellfire Club": Elizabeth Holden. Adult, m/m. Magneto/Cannonball. (Note that Cannonball is explicitly stated to be over 18.) The Summer I Turned Frisky, 15 pg (of 80-pg zine.) The rest of the New Mutants have gone out, but Sam remained behind to finish homework, and was therefore invited by Magneto to attend a Hellfire Club function with him to better understand their "allies". Despite what sounds like an exploitative setup, I found this story fairly well-done and tasteful if you're a fan of slash fic.
