The X-Writers were a collaborative fanfiction group, much in the vein of Marvel Volume One and Alternate Marvel, focussing primarily on the X-Men and associated mutant teams. It was created by Rhonda in September 1995[1].

Welcome to the web site of the unofficial X-Men revisionist scribes: the X-Writers.

Enter the dark side of Marvel's universe. Within these archives are tales of alternate endings -- strange images of pain and bittersweet victories, of life and death, of unsettling times and the bonds of family. The stories are for mature readers and contain mature situations; they contain characterizations and depth, unhappy endings, and authors who don't have to play by the rules.

X-Writers has existed for nearly three years and encompasses a wide variety of authors and writing styles. Bound by a common goal -- to create an imaginative universe and viable, character driven stories -- these writers are remaking the X-Men family of comic books on an issue by issue basis. Beginning after the Age of Apocalypse, these stories take us on a journey to find the cure for the Legacy Virus, to discover the truth behind the X-Traitor, and to face the fallen heroes and triumphant villians.

[2]

According to the Comic Fanfiction History Project, the project was launched in November 1995 with the release of Wolverine #94. The jumping off point from canon continuity was the Age of Apocalypse event, and the project continued until sometime in 1998[3]. Rhonda the group creator was the first editor until January 12, 1999, when she was replaced by Lady Amethyst[4]. It is unclear when she stepped down, but Andrew W was editor as of November 3, 1996[5].

Series

Each writer was given a "comic" to write, with stories expected on a regular monthly basis. The individual comics were, as of the last archive update, as follows:

Title Synopsis
Angels and Demons Vertigo anti-hero John Constantine steps into the Marvel Universe in this cross-company story of magic and, of course, angels and demons.
Cable Death and betrayal and a Great Destiny infuse the stories of Nathaniel Summers, son of Scott Summers and Madelyne Prior [sic].
Darker Side Beyond the light lies a darker realm. Supervillians and those who walk the fine line between good and evil have their stories told here.
Excalibur The UK's band of superheroic mutants.
Generation X The fourth group of trainees take their turn at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, this time with a twist as they're being taught by the ever colorful Emma Frost and Sean Cassidy.
Limited Series Short stories about the individuals behind the teams.
Uncanny X-Men
Wolverine Wrapping up with the 100th issue finale, this wraps up a portion of the Canadian mutant's life.
X-Factor The currently writerless/mostly cancelled story of the government's team of mutants.
X-Force This is the story of Xavier's third group of trainees who've chosen to strike out on their own and leave the others behind. Welcome to their Real World ... California.
X-Man Tales of the dimension hopping Nate Grey and his trusty sidekick Adam X.
X-Men
X-Men Unlimited Side stories of the fringe of mutant society and those outside of the limelight.
X-Saviours In a desperate race to find the cure to the Legacy Virus, they have gathered in Genosha to save the world.

Initially the stories were only available via the X-Writer's mailing list on minuteman.com. A website was created at the same server by Andy Banks[6], but went down on at least one occasion and was subsequently relocated to its final location, which was maintained by Lee[7]. When the mailing list went down unexpectedly in November 1997[7], the issues were posted to alt.comic.fan-fiction while waiting for the list to be recreated.

Notes

1) Angels and Demons issue 4, co-written by Alasdair and Lady Amethyst, was advertised but not archived.

2) Darker Side, issues 1-5; unfortunately, none of these issues were saved by the WBM and are not accessible.

3) Wolverine, issues 94-100 were produced by the X-Writers' team, however the WBM did not archive the links and for now there is no access to what was written, or by whom.

4) The issues that were posted to acff after March 1, 1998, were not archived on the website. Specifically, Uncanny X-Men #339; X-Saviours #2; Cable #37; and X-Men #59.

5) Per the X-Writers email to ACFF on March 2, 1998[12], several titles were cancelled on or around that time: X-Factor, Wolverine, X-Men Unlimited, and Angels & Demons.

6) While Joe Helfrich and Phil Foster were announced as having joined the group in 1997[10], it is unclear if they posted anything - nothing from them appears on the archives.

7) Chris Delaney and CJA Delaney, both credited with writing X-Men, have been assumed to be the same person. JAC Delaney, also writing X-Men, is treated as a separate individual, possibly a sibling. It is unclear what the actual situation was. Ditto with Hosun Lee and Lee - they may have been the same person, but without actual confirmation, they have been listed as separate writers.

  3. ^ It is unclear exactly when the group stopped operating. The last website update was March 25, 1998, however editor Andrew W was calling for writers as of June 9, 1998. His sig, however, describes him as the outgoing editor, so it may be the group folded after he left - at the time he posted to ACFF for more writers, there were only three that were active.
