Chuck Amuck! is the Charles Xavier fanfiction archive created by Alara Rogers and later folded into her Crossroads X page.
Why a Xavier page?Well, I used to have a lengthy rant up here about how I didn't get why there were so few stories about a character as complex as Xavier, and so many about characters I find pretty shallow. A few people took this as a personal attack on their tastes, which wasn't what I meant to do (I may not understand why so many people want to write about Gambit, but I will defend to the death their right to do so. Or something.) So let me try to be a bit calmer this time. :-)
Charles Xavier is a character who has serious flaws. He's a good man, but no saint. And in the X-books, he's often presented as a saint. Well, saints are boring. So a lot of fan writers seem to either buy into the St. Charles hype, and ignore Xavier as a character because who wants to write about a saint?, or they recognize that Xavier is not a saint but go to the opposite extreme and demonize him. There are actually more Xavier-as-villain stories out there than Magneto-as-villain, I kid you not. Lately, with Xavier's suffering at the hands of Bastion, there seem to be a lot more people finding the hooks into Xavier the person, rather than Xavier the saint or Xavier the demon. This is a good thing. I think Charles Xavier is an extraordinarily complex and interesting character, and it amazes me that so few people want to tackle him.
The archive was one of Alara's earlier ones, after the Magneto page and Doom Patrol page and around the same time as her Mystique page[2] in 1998. At the time, there were few stories about Charles, as described in the quote above, and Alara decided to collect together what there was. With the release of the X-Men movies, more fanfic appeared, from which Alara selected those she liked to include in the archive. In the last update she was assisted by Andraste, another big Charles Xavier fan who had provided many fics to the page.
As of the last update in 2003, there were 166 stories by 84 writers archived[3].

Fan Art
- "At A Distance: color" and "At A Distance" black and white by Karolina P. Archived by Karolina P at Fictional Art. Actually these are of Lilandra, not Charles, but it's an illo to a story on this site, so it counts. (Well, it counts because it's my story, and this is my site, dammit, so I say so. :-))
- Magneto and Xavier by Chris Pangle. A moody, black and white piece of the two staring up at the stars.
Reviews
- So You Wanna Read More About... Charles Xavier: By Kielle. Archived by Alara Rogers. The first of Kielle's semi-regular "So You Wanna Read More About..." articles on CFAN. Lists several Xavier tales, with links and Kielle's opinions. Some overlap with this page. Note that I strongly disagree with Kielle's belief that Charles Xavier was out of character in Legionquest, as I think that series is practically definitive for his friendship with Magneto, and I can't figure out what she thought was out-of-character about it. Just had to say so. :-)
- IMHO: Random Thoughts and Violent Bastardy #3: By Dex. Archived by Alicia McKenzie. Dex's third "IMHO" reviews several Charles Xavier stories, including "A Dark And Hungry God Arises" and "Knock Knock."
- IMHO: Random Thoughts and Violent Bastardy #6: By Dex. Archived by Alicia McKenzie. The Christmas "IMHO" reviews "'Til Christmas" and other Christmas stories.
