Hazbin Hotel is an adult animated musical comedy series created by VivziePop.

The series began as a pilot episode made by freelance animators which was released on YouTube in 2019. The concept was later picked up for a full television series by indie production company A24. Season 1 premiered on Amazon Prime in January 2024, giving the fandom almost five years to grow and develop before the release of the full series. Helluva Boss is a spin-off to the series, together making up the Hellaverse.

Seemingly from the beginning the show was marred by controversies, especially in regards to VivziePop herself. Conversely, it was also supported for its queer representation.

Canon

hazbin hotel (Sep 2020) by MD00dles, featuring (clockwise from the bottom) Alastor, Niffty, Angel Dust, Charlie Morningstar, Cherri Bomb, Sir Pentious, Vaggie, and Husk.

The series is centred on Princess of Hell Charlie Morningstar, who decides to open a hotel to rehabilitate sinners. The events of the first season follow Charlie and her partner Vaggie working towards opening the hotel, along with their first patron Angel Dust and the help of the "Radio Demon" Alastor.

Characters

The "Pride" Ring

  • In the Hazbin Hotel universe, there are Seven Rings of Hell, namely Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Envy and Sloth. Each of the Seven Rings of Hell has one of the Seven Deadly Sins who are in charge of their respective ring. Lucifer Morningstar is the largely absentee leader of the Pride ring. His absenteeism has allowed for several Overlords to take over factions of the Pride Ring. The other Seven Deadly Sins are named and introduced in the Hazbin Hotel sister show, Helluva Boss, another adult animated musical romantic comedy series created by VivziePop.
  • Each of the Seven Rings of Hell has a distinct color with the Pride Ring being red. The Pride Ring's sky, buildings and inhabitants all have a crimson hue or elements.
  • Pride is the largest and most diverse of Hell. It is divided into nine different sections referred to by its denizens as the "Nine Circles" with each "circle" coming with their own quirks and lore.

"Hellborn" versus "Sinners"

In the Hazbin Hotel universe, there are several characters who are 'hellborn' i.e. any character who is native to and born in Hell. They have not had any experience in the human world or any experience as a human. One such character is Charlie Morningstar. Characters who are Hellborn are able to traverse freely through the Seven Rings of Hell (Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Envy and Sloth).

'Sinners' were formerly human and were sent to Hell as punishment for deeds done on Earth. Unlike the Hellborn, however, Sinners are confined to the Pride ring. Sinners' demon-like forms are related to the sins they committed on earth and/or their cause of death. For example, Angel Dust was part of an Italian mob family in New York City. Due to their 'web of crime', those affiliated with the mob take on a spider-like appearance. An example of a character whose appearance reflects their cause of death is Alastor and his deer-like appearance i.e. his tail, ears and shoes which resemble deer hoof tracks. Alastor died burying one of his victims on a deer hunting ground. Hunters confused his movements for a deer and took the shot resulting in his death.

Fandom

The fandom is also popular on TikTok, with the Season 1 release generating a variety of fan activity including cosplay and meta discussion. The song 'Poison' also trended both inside the fandom and widely across TikTok with covers of Angel Dust's dance.

Tropes & Fanon

  • It has been confirmed that Hazbin Hotel is in the same universe as Helluva Boss, an adult animated musical romantic comedy series created by VivziePop. In Season 2, Episode 11 "Mastermind" of Helluva Boss, there are several Easter egg references to Lucifer Morningstar including, but not limited to, a rubber duck standing in for the fallen angel. Whether Lucifer has any sort of relationship with Satan, the Goetia, or the Seven Deadly Sins of Helluva Boss has not been elaborated upon in canon but could potentially play a part in the overarching trope of anti-heroes transitioning into traditional hero-type roles prevalent in Hazbin Hotel.
  • There are several fan theories as to why Lucifer Morningstar was late to the battle between the Hazbin Hotel residents and Adam’s army of angels. One popular theory proposes that Lucifer was prohibited from interfering with the exterminations of Sinners unless and until a Hellborn citizen was harmed. Once that clause to the contract and/or deal was breached, Lucifer could then act. When Razzle, one of the small demons who served as Charlie’s bodyguards, was killed by Adam and Charlie herself was attacked, Lucifer was allowed to intervene under the terms of the extermination contract. This theory is supported by Lucifer’s offhanded comment to Charlie that he could not come sooner. However, whether there was a contract setting out the terms of the exterminations and whether Lucifer is restricted from acting has never been explicitly stated in canon. In Season 1, Episode 1 "Overture", Lute states that the Hellborn are spared during the exterminations because Lucifer, at some point, granted Hellborn kind a ‘pardon’. In Season 1, Episode 5 "Dead Beat Dad", when speaking of Lucifer and whether to involve him in the hotel, Charlie tells Vaggie that Lucifer "let the extermination happen to begin with. They just had a meeting and said, "Go ahead and kill everyone!" Later in "Dead Beat Dad", however, it is alluded to by Lucifer that Heaven never gave him a choice or listened to him.
