Daenerys Targaryen is a fictional character from A Song of Ice and Fire, and is played by Emilia Clarke on the HBO television series Game of Thrones.
I think she sees something about herself in the slaves she encounters and frees. She sees herself in the women who were abused, so she rescues them, she sees herself in part of the unsullied as they were also taken from their homes and families and raised to be something else[1]

Pairings
Daenerys is a widely, diversely-shipped character, to the extent she is one of the Little Black Dresses of ASoIaF/GOT fandom. This may be because her unique position in the story allows for the easy creation of AU scenarios or simply a result of her overall popularity as a character.
