Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art that was prevalent during the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries). The term ukiyo-e translates to "pictures from the floating world," as works typically depicted ephemeral or everyday subjects such as nature, travel scenes, folktales, kabuki actors, and sumo wrestlers. One of the most well-known examples is The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
