The Bradbury Title Challenge (also The Ray Bradbury Title Challenge) was a one-off fanfic challenge, posted by Liviapenn in June 2002 to her livejournal. The challenge was, simply, to write a piece of Smallville fanfic, using the title of a Ray Bradbury story or novel.[1]
It was an extremely successful challenge, perhaps because it was riding on the success of the previous X-Title Challenge, and perhaps because, like the X-Title Challenge, the guidelines were extremely loose; there was no deadline, no pairing or genre restrictions, and no required word count. More than one person could write a story using a certain title if they were so inspired, and several authors wrote multiple stories.
Stories were posted in various places: to the Level Three Record Room, the Smallville Slash Archive, to livejournal or fanfiction.net, or to authors' personal websites. An index page of all the stories was created on debchan.com, but disappeared when that domain expired, but based on three posts in Dreamwidth about the challenge it was possible to expand the list of works.[2][3]
Challenge Rules
*The Ray Bradbury Title Challenge*
Rules:
1. Choose the title of a story by Ray Bradbury. Write a Smallville story with that title. Any length, het, gen or slash; any pairing or no pairing at all.
2. Try to do the more complex ones: "come into my cellar." "no particular night or morning." "a final sceptre, a lasting crown." Bradbury has a ton of really simple titles: "the candle," "the city," "the crowd," but try to do the cool ones first, kay? :)
2a. (And let's not all rush to do "The Blue Bottle," okay? Like there haven't been enough Ty Nant stories? *grins* Okay, that's all I'm gonna say on that.)
3. Oh, yeah, and two people can choose the same title, just like the x-title challenge.
4. Do not send me the stories. Upload them to your personal page or www.smallvillefanfic.com or http://smallville.slashdom.com or fanfiction.net (when it's working again.) Leave a comment here with the URL, and in a while I'll put together an index page linking all of them.
5. Crossovers are okay.
6. Te can write a Bradbury-title story. But she has to write a James Tiptree, Jr.-title story, too. Why? Because I said so.
Lists of Bradbury titles can be found here:
This is good page that includes some alternate titles. Which are fine to use as titles for the challenge. http://www.hycyber.com/SF/stories_of_bradbury_index.html
On this page, look under "short fiction" for the short story titles (don't do the poems or essays.)
