X-Day is a day of celebration for all fans of the Marvel X-Books. Celebrated on September 23rd, X-Day celebrates the anniversary of the publishing of the first X-Book, The X-Men. To show their appreciation for these comics, X-Fans find creative ways of demonstrating their enjoyment of the X-Books to the general public. Submissions of comic inspired art, fiction and web-sites are accepted and sometimes even compete for prizes. X-Day was started in 1996 by X-Fan Josh Wheeler.

This site is being documented here as part of the OTW's GeoCities Rescue Project.

History

X-Day was first celebrated on September 23, 1996 - the 33rd anniversary of the day that the first issue of The X-Men was published. It was begun by Josh Wheeler, however he was unable to host X-Day festivities in 1997, but the X-Day continued. Of the original 1996 page, only the acknowledgement page remains. Shannon Pipik was the X-Day Manager from 1997-2002, but she was aided in her work by Darren Duncan (more with each passing year), and several other people. The 2003 X-Day competition was run by Darren Duncan.[1]

X-Day 2004 never happened - and in March 2006 the annual X-Day event was put on hiatus indefinitely according to the website and Duncan.

Submission Rules

Categories awarded tended to change, depending on the submissions. The first X-Day in 1996 was undelineated - submissions were a collection of poems, fanfiction, fanart and websites (and one catalogue of someone's personal X-Books collection). 1997 divided the options into three categories - fiction/poetry; fanart and websites; as well as the non-competitive section where links were shared to items of note that weren't included in the competition. In 2000, the 3 main categories were divided into sub-categories, including hand-drawn and computer enhanced art; poetry, short stories and novellas; and professional, semi-professional, focused and archive, legacy and new. 2003 went another step further and divided the subcategories even further, especially for fanart.

From the last awards:

Each X-Day competition has three main activity stages which must be done in order. The first is collecting and listing submissions which may compete. The second is collecting votes or ratings on the listed submissions to determine winners for that year. The third is the announcement of the year's winners. The submissions gathering period must start before the voting period, and the voting period must end after the submissions period; however, those two periods can and will overlap, ensuring that participants have the most time to do either, and allowing for more flexible start and end dates. The winners announcement will be after the voting period ends. There will be notices posted on the home page of this site and posted to various other discussion forums for when each stage begins and/or ends. The Submissions period will be at least 4 weeks long, and the Voting period will also be at about 4 weeks long; the voting period will continue for at least one full week after the submissions period ends. Within a few days after the Voting period ends, winners will be announced. You will have at least 2 weeks notice before the submissions period ends and two before the voting period ends, so you should have enough advance notice to get involved.
