Recs and Reviews
There are a lot of multi-fandom tributes to amazing ladies, all worth watching, but this is a cut above. It makes an unexpected song work with clever parallels; every time I re-watch I see something new. It's also noticeably more diverse than most--by which I mean not only are more women of color than usual in this type of vid, but that it showcases a wide range of heroic moments, including contemplative ones, and a lot of unexpected choices--minor characters, villainesses, women who aren't fan favorites. (Also: Using Enya for good and not for evil.) You really must watch this.[2]
I love how this doesn't just represent female characters, but strong female characters - and shows that strength doesn't have to be at the end of a blaster or a sword.I think I'm more in love because of some notable omissions from movies/TV shows that had other female characters in them, but who I agree don't portray the same level of 'strength' as the ones you included. Bravo, Calapine.[3]
calapine has made a glorious multi-fandom vid in honor of halfamoon: Wild Child, a celebration of female characters in F/SF. Epic in scope, personal in emotional impact, a wonderful and inspiring piece of work. Make your Sunday brighter.[4]
calapine makes an unconventional but beautiful choice with her song, and for something so epic in scope, she makes it impactful on a personal scale as well, and deeply uplifting. This tribute is amazing not only for its subject matter, but also for its diversity. Women are not just awesome when they are gorgeous and kick-ass and come out with both guns blazing, but they're also awesome when they're doing science experiments, or being brave, or making difficult decisions. Women can be some of the most harshly judged characters on screen -- because often, women are their own harshest critics. This vid highlights some unexpected choices, and reminds us that every single woman is more than just the few seconds we see them on screen -- they each have their own stories.[5]
