Ashes to Ashes is a Science fiction/drama sequel to Life on Mars again created by Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharoah and made by Kudos for the BBC. A2A's main character is Alex Drake, a detective inspector with London's Metropolitan police who is shot in the head in 2008 during a hostage negotiation and wakes up in 1981 where she meets the iconoclastic character Gene Hunt. The show aired for three seasons with the third and final season airing in 2010.
Alex is a psychologist who had access to Sam Tyler's voice recordings of his experiences with DCI Hunt in 1973 and she believes that Hunt and his colleges are constructs created by her traumatized brain to keep it active and fighting for life. Throughout the second series Alex gets mental flashes of paramedics who appear to be moving her to hospital.
A popular pairing is Gene/Alex.
In 2010, fans put out Nine Oh Six, an e-zine with articles about the show and containing extensive art.
