Recs & Links
I regularly recommend stories on my livejournal, and all these recs are gathered in my memories. Because I would rather write more fic than duplicate work (or even try to make a selection of the hundreds of stories I've recommended since April 2003), but the site seemed lacking without some recs and links, I will restrict myself here to recommending interesting HP sites, good HP authors, and inspiring HP fanart. My taste of pairings is rather eclectic, my main interests being Snarry and Snapledore, but I'm sure there's something for everyone here.
Recommended Places to Go
These sites are my favourites: good archives (interface, page layout, advertising) and good fic *g*
Inkstained Fingers - The best HP slash archive in my humble opinion. Many pairings, and easy search engine (both quick and advanced searching). In general it encourages single file posting, although unfortunately quite a number of authors do post their stories in little bits, but there is a search filter for series to help with that. Follow the instructions on the mainpage for the password.
Evil Twin Corps - A relatively new archive for the After Class, Canis Major, and HarryxLucius mailing lists. For your Harry/Severus, Harry/Sirius and Harry/Lucius reading pleasure. There is not an enormous amount of fic there yet, but a number of good authors are already using it, and I'm sure it will only grow.
Glassesreflect - Down this summer, and now up in all its glory: the Potter slash archive. The password for the nc-17 rated stories can be found in the files section of the mailinglist.
Restrictedsection.org - Slash and het nc-17 archive. Like Glassesreflect there is a selection procedure, which guarantees a rather high quality of fic. Follow the instructions on the main page to obtain a password.
skyehawke - This is a rather good multi-fandom archive. Searching for individual fics is not that easy, but check out the author listing for any familiar names. A good place to post if you write varying ratings, varying pairings, and a mixture of gen, het and slash.
Harry Potter Mpreg - Archive for the mpreg mailing list. It is updated regularly (once every week or fortnight), and new additions are indicated clearly. The quality varies as with all open archives, but it is a sure place to go when you're in the mood for some mpreg.
Fanfiction.net - The starting place. As a rule the quality of the fic is not high, but there are some gems and a number of good writers who stubornly stay there until they're booted off for breaking the rating rules. If you're in the mood for badfic WIPs, this is the place to go.
The Severus Snape Fuh-Q-Fest - Snape, Snape, Snape, and more Snape. In every conceivable pairing, in every conceivable position, with every conceivable kink. What more can I say?
The Snape Slash Fleet - Not all the ships are working (some seem to have gone missing), but a good place to try out some different Snape-pairngs.
Walking The Plank - The Snarry ship from the above site. The links have unfortunately not been updated, and this is its new harbour. Occasionally updated, but already housing a good amount of good Snarry fic.
Dusk-til-Dawn Fuh-Q-Fest - The Snarry fest. Three waves so far, so lots of fic. The password is posted on the kardasi-security mailing list.
The Thin Line - A very near complete archive for Snack fic. Good layout, and good fic.
The Severus Snape/Albus Dumbledore Buggering Bee - Good Snapledore fic. There are still stories in the process of being posted, and the fest hasn't ended yet, so more good fic to be expected.
Sweet and Sour - The one and only Snape/Hagrid archive. Not a pairing with a large fanbase of writers, unfortunately, but most all Snagrid fics can be found here.
The Snape-Weasley Archive - Comprehensively sorted per Weasley pairing. Good layout, and good fic.
Dystopia - A Tom Riddle and Voldemort fanfic and fanart archive. Regularly updated and already sporting a rather large collection of good fic.
Recommended Authors to Read
There are many good writers in the HP fandom, so this is a very subjective and rather random list. The writers listed here are good (well, that's pretty obvious) and productive.While quality is of course most important, when rec'ing authors I thought it best to choose those who have quite a lot for you to read (otherwise I'd just end up rec'ing stories here again). For more goodfic, do check out the recommendations on my livejournal.Amanuensis - Amanuensis writes smut, writes humour, writes angst, and does it all very, very well. Her angst is dark (read the warnings dark!), her humour is hilarious (just the thing to pick you up after the angst), and her smut is hot, hot, HOT!
Anath deMalfoy - Anath writes deliciously lush prose filled with debauchery. Underaged Draco/Lucius, BDSM Lucius/Walden, and melancholy Lucius/Alastor ficlets. The vast majority of her stories are not for the faint of heart or easily offended, but if you like the alternative, I can definitely recommend her.
Bernice - Promotor and writer of Snagrid, Bernice maintains the Sweet and Sour archive. Her journal and many daily posts are a lot of fun to read, and I can recommend all of her fic. The Snape/Hooch is hot (and yes, I know! It's het!), the Snape/Flitwick even hotter. And her Snagrid is delightful and wonderfully IC.
Chaos Rose - A definite must for any and all Snucius fans. Chaos' Algolagnia 'verse converted me to this pairing. Read the longer stories on her page, and then start hanging around her livejournal: on a near daily basis she posts little snippets of Snucius and the others from Algolagnia, and occasionally Snucius snippets from an even kinkier 'verse.
Dana Phearson - Dana has to be my favourite Snape writer of all time. He is bitter and nasty and vindictive and petty, but still a good man at heart. Dana does not shrink away from the ugliness that is inherent in certain pairings. If you like your Snapledore and Snupin lovey-dovey happy, she's probably not the writer to read. Only Dana could make me read (and love! adore! worship!) Snape/OFC and Snape/Molly. Most her fics can be found on ISF, or have a browse through her journal.
Delphi - One of the very best Snapledore writers. Delphi is a master at writing drabbles, and has written a number of longer stories as well that are just as awesome. You can find most of her work on ISF as well, and her livejournal is a good place to keep an eye on for more new drabbles.
DementorDelta - Delta writes very hot, and very good Snarry fic. Parseltongue, chan, rimming, and many more kinks. Well-written, very hot, what more coudl you wish for?
Diana Williams - A very good fest writer, Diana has written a number of extremely enjoyable Snarry, Snupin and Snapledore fics. Her current Snapledore project, the Wish 'verse series, is absolutely delightful, but do check out her cross-dressing Snape series, and the many good Snarry fics on her page.
Drake of Dross - Add Snape, mpreg and good fic, and you'll invariably wind up reading Drake of Dross' stories. Various pairings (Snagrid, Snape/Twins), and a number of interesting WIPs. She is one of the very few writers I've encountered able to make the kids interesting. Some of her work is also archived on the Mpreg Archive, and on ff.net.
Josan - Josan is whom I would call a futurefic writer. She creates impressive and detailed worlds inside the HP 'verse, with a wealth of interesting original characters to star beside Snape. A lot of her work is more gen than slash (with slash overtones though), and most of them are quite long; always a good thing. You can find nearly all her stories on ISF and the Snape-Weasley archive.
Juxian Tang - A prolific and good writer, with a definite talent for the darker fic and a variety of pairings. Interesting plots and hot smut, her stories are definitely worth reading, even if some of them do need some work English-wise. As far as I can tell all her stories eventually wind up on her homepage, but keep an eye on the fests and there's a good chance you'll see something of hers appear there too.
Koanju and Saeva - What a team! Koanju and Saeva write yummy long pr0nny stories, with one of the most original and intriguing interpretations of Remus Lupin. My favourites would have to be the incredibly long Harry/Sirius AU Eclipse, and even better than that: Anger Management, which is kinky!Remus/Harry, and explores the possibility of Harry indeed giving Dumbledore the finger and making a deal with Voldemort.
Leni Jess - Leni is a very accomplished writer with a distinct style of her own. The stories and pairings she writes are varied, although she always returns to Lucius Malfoy in the end. I've had the pleasure of beta'ing a number of her fics and am glad for it: she can sell me Hermione, and even Snape/Hermione. Most of her fics can be found on her livejournal, or linked from there, and you can find her first fic in HP, a delightfully long Harry/Lucius, in the files section of HarryxLucius.
LinW - LinW (aka Nesting Hedwig) is one of my favourite authors in all of HP fandom. She writes incredibly sexy androgynous Harry, and yummy angst and romance. Her fics can be found scattered around on various ML's and fest pages, so here's as best I can do to provide a comprehensive list. HP/LM: Duet, Family Trees, Just Another Leaf On The Tree, Charcoal Lines, Ornament, Warmth, Much To Discuss, Pet HP/LM and HP/BW: Just Tie A Knot HP/SS: The Price of Infatuation, The Perfect Wife
Lux - A writer with a very unique style and a penchant for Snarry in... interesting situations. Not your run of the mill HP fanfic, and all the better for that. I can most definitely recommend her chan, and be warned that the darker fics are dark.
Predatrix - Smut and humour, Predatrix is definitely one of the very best. From Snagrid to Snarry to Snilch, the pairings are diverse and the smut is invariably scorching hot.
Sophie Richard - I first encountered Sophie through her work with TCRegan, which can be found here. On her own livejournal I discovered even more goodfic, and hot good fic at that. She excells in short one-shot PWP's, and her ability to hint at plot and backstory astounds me, not to mention her productivity. For my birthday she wrote me fifteen fics in one week, which you can find here.
Tara Tory - In the span of two weeks Tara posted around nine new stories on ISF, each better than the other. With one exception it's all Snarry (the exception being a Snape/Neville that is good!). Her Snape is nicer than we're probably used to, but no less entertaining. She has a wonderrful eye for detail (magical background &c), and a number of nice long fics to curl up with. Her stories can be found on ISF, and another two on Walking the Plank.
Recommended Sights to See
I only discovered fanart recently, and - undoubtedly like most of us who can manage (badly drawn) stick-figures and not much else - I am in awe of the talent of these artists. And remember: never archive other people's fanart without their express permission, and only ever link to their homepage (preferably mentioning their name and email address).
Brevisse - Brevisse has a gorgeous style of drawing, I asolutely love her Snape and Harry.
Fiendling - Paintings and portraits, smut and non-smut (but oh, the smut is hot! and the non-smut is cute/sad/funny!).
Glockgal - A wealth of characters and pairings, and beautiful fanart.
Lizardspots - Lizardspots draws the various HP characters in various pairings (and outfits *g*) with great skill, and her work is definitely worth checking out.
Lunulet - I'm no expert, but I know what I like. A most definite recommendation.
Sherant - Lush, smutty nc-17 artwork that is to die for. Absolutely gorgeous.
Snaples - Snaples specializes in portraits, and since a few months HP comics. Her comics are hilarious, and I love the style, and her other fanart is a joy for desktops (as long as you remember to keep a program open for whenever your parents/non-slash friends/employer walks past).
Waccawheels - Beautiful fanart of a wide range of HP characters, Harry, the Marauders, Tom Riddle, you name it.
Yukipon - Anime style fanart, funny and hot and just plain good. If you friend her livejournal and ask to be on the nc-17 filter you can look forward to seeing the uncensored versions on your f-list.
