1900s
1930s
- 1935: DC Comics, an American comic book publisher, is founded as National Allied Publications, rebranding as Detective Comics in 1937.[1]
- February 1936: David Kyle publishes the first science fiction fanzine containing comic art, Fantasy World (later renamed Phantasy World).
- 1938: First appearance of Superman in print. Beginning of the Golden Age of American comic books (1938-1956).
- 1939: Marvel Comics, an American comic book publisher, is founded under the name Timely Comics.
1940s
- 1944: EC Comics, an American comic book publisher, is founded.
- October 1947: The first issue of The Comic Collector's News is published. According to Bill Schelly, it is "the only documented fanzine devoted exclusively to comic art in the 1940s."[1]
1950s
- 1953: The EC Fan Bulletin, possibly the first fanzine devoted to EC Comics, is published by bhob Stewart. Cover of issue 2 Other EC fanzines follow.
- April 19, 1954: Fredric Wertham publishes Seduction of the Innocent, a nonfiction book blaming comic books for juvenile delinquency.
- 1954: The Comics Magazine Association of America forms and creates the Comics Code Authority, a form of self-censorship as an alternative to government regulation.
- 1956: Fred von Bernewitz publishes the first incarnation of The Complete EC Checklist.
- 1956: The Silver Age of American comic books begins. EC Comics ceases publishing comic books except for MAD Magazine.
- April 1958: First issue of The Fantasy Collector, a long-running adzine published by G. A. Bibby. In addition to comics, an issue from 1960 includes ads for fans buying and selling science fiction magazines, Tarzan novels, and the works of H.P. Lovecraft.
1960s
Rise of Underground Comics (comix) as a response to the Comics Code.
- 1961: Timely Comics rebrands itself as Marvel Comics and launches new superhero titles, starting with The Fantastic Four.
- 1961: Science Fiction and Comics Association (SFCA) is formed.
- 1961: SFCA and G.B. Love starts publishing a fanzine, Rocket's Blast.
- 1961: Jerry Bails starts several fanzines, including The Comicollector, The Comic Reader, and Alter Ego.
- 1964: The Comicollector and Rocket's Blast merge to form a new zine, Rocket's Blast Comicollector. RBCC lasts until 1983.
1970s
1980s
- 1986: Dark Horse Comics, an American publisher of comics and manga, is founded. It publishes a lot of licensed tie-in comics.
1990s
- 1992: Image Comics, an American comic book publisher, is founded.
- January 11, 1994: The newsgroup alt.comic.fan-fiction is created.
- 1995?: The mailing list Untold-l is started.
- August 17, 1996: The website Comic Fan-Fiction Authors' Network (CFAN) is opened. CFAN is a hub for online comic-book based fanfic fandom.
- 1996: CBR Community comic fan message board starts.
- 1997: Gay League community is formed on AOL.
- 1997: Subreality Cafe, a shared universe, is created by Kielle and becomes popular among comics fanwriters.
- April 1998: The mailing list Outside The Lines is started for comic book fanfiction as a replacement for Untold-l.
- 1998: Comic Book Fan-Fiction Awards starts
2000s
00s
- 2002: The first Free Comic Book Day is held.
- 2002-2005: Comic Fanfiction History Project
- December 2003: The LiveJournal community Scans Daily is created for posting scans of comics. It begins as a community for slash fans, but later expands in scope.
- September 2005: The LiveJournal community Marvel Slash is created.
- July 2006: The LiveJournal newsletter community ComicStore News is created.
- February 2007: The LiveJournal community Superhero Muses is created.
- May 2, 2008: The first Iron Man film is released, inaugurating the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- July 2009: The LiveJournal community marvel_kink is created to host a kink meme. It is popular, but short-lived. Several other general kink memes for Marvel fans are later started, but don't see the same level of activity.
