Fan Fiction Supplements · Issues 01-10 · Issues 11-23

The Hatstand Express Fiction Supplement collected the overflow of stories from The Hatstand Express. The supplement ran for ten issues and ended in 1987.

In early Pros fandom, it was sometimes referred to as "Involvement," perhaps because that was the title of the first story in issues 1-2 which contained only Meg Lewtan’s work.

About the numbering conflicts and confusion: "By the way, I also have to clear up some understandable confusion about the numbering on the Fiction Supplements. I inadvertently labeled the last Fiction Supplement #5 when in fact it should have been #4. My apologies for any confusion this caused. Since I think it would only compound the error to reuse the number 5 again, number 4 will simply not be used. The next Fiction Supplement will be number 6. Again, I am sorry for the mix-up." [1]

Issue 3

The Hatstand Express Fiction Supplement 3 was published in August 1985 and contains 58 pages.

The first part of Sebastian's "Hyperion to a Satyr" appeared in The Hatstand Express #3.

Issue 4

The Hatstand Express Fiction Supplement 4

Issue #4 never existed. The editor misnumbered the issues. Here are her comments on the matter from The Hatstand Express 11:

By the way, I also have to clear up some understandable confusion about the numbering on the Fiction Supplements. I inadvertently labeled the last Fiction Supplement #5 when in fact it should have been #4. My apologies for any confusion this caused. Since I think it would only compound the error to reuse the number 5 again, number 4 will simply not be used.[1]

Issue 5

The Hatstand Express Fiction Supplement 5 was published in 1986 and contains 57 pages. The editor apologizes to those who found The Hatstand Express #9 hard to read: "I switched from the printer I have always used for my other zine (NTS) to another firm because it appeared they would do as good a job for less money. This was definitely not the case, and with this issue I'm returning to the printer I have always used for my zines. Hopefully, you will notice a definite improvement in the quality of the printing in this issue."

Issue 9

The Hatstand Express Fiction Supplement 9 was published in 1988 and contains 57 pages. The editor writes a long editorial about the struggles to get this issue of the Supplement printed, what to expect in the next issue and the financial status of The Hatstand Express.

  • On the struggle to get the issue printed: "Welcome to T.H.E.'s Fiction Supplement #9. It contains some very nice fiction, poetry and art. I do ask your patience with this issue. My word processor went down with only a third of the zine printed and a ZebraCon deadline staring me in the face. As I could not access my disks, the remainder of #9 was re-typed on four different machines in a very limited time span. So be forewarned, despite sincere efforts at proofreading, typos are definitely lurking in these pages."
  • On the next issue: "The next issue of T.H.E. will come out in December before Christmas. It will include an interview with H.G. A list of her stories is printed in this issue, and letters, both on H.G.'s work and the previous interviews are eagerly sought
  • On finances: "There are also two matters I want to keep you, as readers, informed of concerning T.H.E. The first concerns the present six issue series of T.H.E. The zine again faces a serious problem. When renewal notices were sent out with #16 it was aksed (sic) that renewals be made by the end of August. When issue 16 was sent, the zine had 100+ subscribers. As of early October, that number has dropped to 70. This is a substantial decrease in readership, and one I neither expected nor planned for. There are, of course, many reasons for people to drop a subscription, though no one has been in contact with me to indicate why they have not resubscribed. Some flucuation (sic) is normal and I allow for that, but this is considerably more than I could, or would have, anticipated. As a result of this situation, there is currently money available for at least four of the projected six issues. Printing of any issues in this cycle beyond these four depends strictly on what happens with subscriptions in the next few months."
  • On group subscriptions: "I do ask again that anyone involved in a group subscription consider obtaining their own sub. The cost can be spread over the year rather than paid in one lump sum to ease any financial concerns. To those of you who have not renewed, I ask you to consider re-subscribing if you are still interested in B/D fandom. If you have any problems, questions or concerns about T.H.E., please let me know, and I'll do my best to answer them. I will keep everyone informed of future events.

  • On a format change: "The other matter I wanted to inform you of is a format change for T.H.E. which I am considering for whenever we begin a new cycle of issues. After discussion with a number of fans, I have decided to experiment with decreasing the number of issues per subscription cycle to four. The page count of each issue would be larger and content would be all fiction, poetry, art, cartoons, etc. Letters have continued to,be both slow in coming in and low in number. It seems that there is very limited interest in a letters section. For this reason, I thought an experiment in format change was called for. I would appreciate everyone's reactions, ideas, and suggestions on the proposed change. Please do let me know what you think of the idea.
  • Final words: "As I stated above, I will keep you all informed of the financial status of T.H.E. I am very hopeful that enough people, both old and new subscribers, will become a part of T.H.E. to insure the publishing of this entire six issue series. If that does not happen, I will let you know as soon as I have decided what steps I will be taking. I will be at ZCon if anyone who is attending has any ideas, suggestions, etc. on the best way to handle this unexpected problem."

Personal Ads

  • "PERSONAL AD: For Sale: Zebra Con. What: B/D and "body parts" photos. All are photos that were taken with the idea of "/" in mind - photos of them looking soulfully into one another's blue/green eyes; photos of them touching each other; photos of them reacting to one another; etc. Also, miscellaneous photos of belly buttons exposed, tongues stuck out and cream colored, wool gabardine covered proof that Bodie is circumcised, not to mention close ups of behinds and that patch on a certain pair of tight jeans in "Blind Run". All photos were taken from the TV and are not copies of the photographic efforts of others who produce/sell photos in this fandom. They cost $1.00 apiece. Because I have no idea if anyone besides myself a few friends want this sort of photo, I'm only going to be able to take orders, but I promise prompt delivery. Where: I won't be at a table, but I will post notice of time and place to see the photos. Or, if you see me and want to look at the pictures, I'll be happy to make appropriate arrangements."
