This is a story where Doyle is placed in a "feminine" position. He is pursuing Bodie, who has left CI5 for the jungles. Bodie and another butch mere end up fighting over a handcuffed and helpless Ray, who lies quivering on the ground. Bodie wins the fight and drags Doyle into the bedroom, where he has to stage a "conquest" (i.e. rape). Bodie manages not to go "all the way," but in my opinion, goes far enough to constitute a sexual violation. Later on, after Doyle has been rescued from the whole scene and the two are back in London, they "talk it out." Doyle is quite leery of Bodie (who can blame him?) The two eventually end up together. Another disturbing story which keeps popping up in my mind...

Ghods, I made the mistake of re-reading PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT. I had forgotten about how the nasty butch merc had torn most of Doyle's clothes off in sexual lust. So here we have poor little, quivering Ray, lying in the corner, not only bleeding but half-naked while Bodie and the other mere fight over the "spoils." I also forgot the trembling hostage scene at the end as well (guess who's the prize?) And Ray doesn't hesitate at all in falling into the strong arms which only a while ago had been plundering and violating him. Of course, it was only an act — or was it? Geez, what is going on here? What is the fascination with all this?
