The Flash is a DC Comics comic book series about the superhero of the same name The Flash, which has been taken up by several different characters which all possess "super speed".

Canon

The Flash first appeared in Flash Comics #1 (January 1940). Characters that have held the mantel: Jay Garrick (1940–present), Barry Allen (19561985, 2008–present), Wally West (19862006, 20072012), and Bart Allen (20062007, 2009–present).

The Flash has appeared in several animated movies: Justice League: The New Frontier (2008), Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths (2010), DC Super Friends (2010), Justice League: Doom (2012), Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox (2013), JLA Adventures: Trapped In Time (2014), and Justice League: War (2014).

The Flash has also appeared in several animated series: The Superman/Aquaman Hour of Adventure (1967), Super Friends (19731985), DCAU: Superman: The Animated Series (1997) & Justice League (20012004)/Justice League Unlimited (2004–2006), Teen Titans (2005), The Batman (2007), Batman: The Brave and the Bold (2009-2010), and Young Justice (2010-2013).

The Flash has also appeared in several television series Legends of the Superheroes (1979), The Flash (1990-1991), and Smallville (2004-2011, 2013-present). Barry Allen has appeared in Arrow (2013-present) which led to his own spin-off show The Flash (2014-present).

The Flash and other DC Comics characters who possess super speed and a strong enough access to the speed force have the ability to travel through time or to alternate universes. Flashpoint is a DC comics crossover story arc about an altered DC Universe in which only Barry Allen seems to be aware of significant differences between the regular timeline and the altered one, revealed to have been caused by Barry's attempt to change the past, which shattered the history of his allies. The Flash (2014) has multiple storylines involving time travel.

Supporting characters include Joan Williams (Jay's girlfriend and then wife) Iris West (Barry's girlfriend and then wife), Linda Park (Wally's girlfriend and then wife), Valerie Perez (Bart's girlfriend). See here for more supporting characters.

Some of the more well-known The Flash villains are Captain Cold, Weather Wizard, Trickster, and Gorilla Grodd.

While Fan Guest of Honor at New Zealand's ConVERGE convention in 1988, Australian fan Ian McLean cosplayed as DC Comics' The Flash to host It's in the Beg!, a parody of a quirky New Zealand TV game show, It's in the Bag. The skit was videoed for posterity.
