Girls' Generation, also known as SNSD or SoShi (소녀시대 So Nyeo Shi Dae), is a very popular South Korean band and one of the best-selling girl groups in South Korea and worldwide. They are known as the "Nation's girlgroup".

The group is signed to SM Entertainment and includes Taeyeon (Kim Taeyeon; 김태연), Sunny (Lee Soonkyu; 이순규), Tiffany (Hwang Tiffany; 황미영), Hyoyeon (Kim Hyoyeon; 김효연), Yuri (Kwon Yuri; 권유리), Sooyoung (Choi Sooyoung; 최수영), Yoona (Im Yoonah; 임윤아) and Seohyun (Seo Junhyun; 서주현). They debuted as nine with member Jessica (Jung Jessica; 정제시카) who left the band in 2014 due to the concern of the company as well as the other members of SNSD over her scheduling conflicts while Jessica herself stated that she had been "forced" out of the band.

On August 5, 2007 Girls' Generation officially made their debut on SBS's Inkigayo with their single "Into the New World" (다시 만난 세계). Even though their album gained some attention, their breakthrough came with their single "Gee" which is still a well-known song. In 2010 the band made their Japanese debut and through "I Got A Boy" as well as the English version of "The Boys" they gained worldwide recognition. Over the years the band released six Korean and three Japanese albums while holding several concert tours being known for reinventing their fashion style and stage performances.

In 2012, they formed the sub-unit Girls' Geneation-TTS also known as TaeTiSeo consisting of Taeyeon, Tiffany and Seohyun. Just as Girls' Generation the sub-group was successful likewise their solo careers. The girls later admitted that they hated the name of the sub-unit at first. During an interview on Entertainment Weekly, Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun were asked if they came up with their group name themselves. Tiffany admitted their company assigned the name and they didn’t like it at first. Tiffany stated, "No. We really didn't like the name. We asked, 'Should our unit name be 'Twinkle' or [something else],' and the company told us to just go with 'TaeTiSeo.' We couldn't believe that we were going to debut with the names written on our schedule sheets (abbreviated as Tae, Ti, Seo, Yoon, Sun, etc.), but that's really what happened."

Fandom

The fans call themselves "SONEs", often stylized as S♥NE. It origins in the song "Tell Me Your Wish" from their first album because SONE written in Hangul is 소원 translating to "wish". The deeper meaning is that 소원 (SoWun), pronounced "So One", implies that Girls' Generation will always be one with their fans (taking the first syllable of their name SNSD). The fandom colour is "Pastel Rose".

Nowadays, Korean and Chinese SONEs are strictly OT8 and hate anything regarding OT9 (Korean comments on videos about Jessica often still call her a traitor. They dislike her because of her initial Weibo post which is considered a huge betrayal of the group amongst them) while International SONEs used to be split between OT8 and OT9 stans nowadays definitely leaning a lot more towards OT8 after the marketing of her book which is widely considered as at least discourteous. (In the beginning, international fans were against SNSD - not sure one could say they were with Jessica either, everyone from boygroup fangirls to Blackjacks just saw it as the thing that could finally bring the mighty SNSD down. Many international Sones were divided, most tried to be OT9, but blame were still thrown back and forth. Among the members Taeyeon and Tiffany probably got the most hate, Taeyeon was unfortunately in the middle of being witchhunted by EXO-Ls over her dating "scandal". To understand the fandom's reaction, you need to realize how strong soshibond was, at least in the public perception. They expected the girls to be together, forever. When Jessica posted on Weibo that she had been kicked out, everyone thought she had been hacked. No one could believe it.) Some people even talk about the erasure of Jessica from SNSD's legacy with fans also speculating that SM Entertainment blacklisted her similar to former label mates JYJ of TVXQ especially after a video of her answering the question whether she wanted to promote on music shows surfaced. There are some obnoxious and toxic OT9 stans (mostly either young fans who didn't experience 2014 or old fans who don't really follow the members anymore and are therefore "stuck in the past" not realizing that neither party views Jessica as part of SNSD anymore), but a lot of OT9 stans also accepted that Jessica left and moved on, not being overly attached to having a comeback with Jessica, still supporting her future projects though calling themselves OT9/OT8+1 because Jessica was a huge part of SNSD's branding and sound in their prime. A lot of newer fans tend to be OT8 since they have no emotional attachement to the OT9 era.

These days the fandom consists of a lot of solo stans of each individual member since the band rarely promotes together whilst further establishing their solo careers (the members said that they wanted to focus on themselves and make full comebacks when their schedules align - some people however couldn't accept that and tried to get for example #SMgiveSNSDacomeback trending). While many SONEs may not be strictly solo stans, a lot of fans are clearly biased towards certain members. Most fans though respect the other members and keep up to date. The fandom came together to support the girls as a unit for their most recent comeback in 2022, their 15 year anniversary, while some old arguments arose again. The original individual fandoms names were Taeganger (Taeyeon), SunShiner (Sunny), GorJESS Spazzer/Maomao (Jessica), Hyohunnie (Hyoyeon), Yurisistable (Yuri), Fanytastic (Tiffany), SooYoungster (Sooyoung), YoonAddict (Yoona) and SeoMate (Seohyun). However, nowadays Jessica's fans are called "Golden Stars" as a tribute to all her fans who shined during her dark times. Tiffany also renamed her fandom into Young Ones. A lot of fans of the other girls are also embarassed by the dated names and simply call themselves Hyo stan or Taeyeon fan or make up their own fun names like "asshyoles" (Hyoyeon).

Shipping

There also used to be fandom names for the ships: fans of SunYeon (Sunny x Taeyeon) are "DanDyu Gangsters", fans of JeTi (Jessica x Tiffany) are "JeTidal Wave Surfers". YoonYul (Yoona x Yuri) create "Twin Troopers", YulTi (Yuri x Tiffany) "Soulkeepers", YoonSic (Yoona x Jessica) "YoonSicretives" and SooSun (Sooyoung x Sunny) "SoonSunatics". Fans of TaeNy (Taeyeon x Tiffany) are "Lock-Smiths", of YoonHyun (Yoona x Seohyun) "YoonHyun Loyalist", of SooSica (Sooyoung x Jessica) "The SooSic Sphere", of SooTae (Sooyoung x Taeyeon) "SooTaelite" and of SooRi (Sooyoung x Yuri) they are "SooRiZens". If they are liking SooNa (Sooyoung x Yoona) they call themselves "SooNata", of 2Ny (Tiffany x Sunny) "Eye-Smilers" and of YulSic (Yuri x Jessica) "Royal Shippers". Out of the 36 possible pairing options these are more popular than the others; according to thetoptens.com YoonYul was the most popular ship followed by YoonSic and TaeNy. Nowadays, Taeyeon/Jessica and Jessica/Tiffany seem to be also fairly popular.

Apart from that they were frequently shipped with several male (and female) idols they had interaction with (like Taeyeon and G-Dragon of Big Bang or Yoona and Taecyeon of 2PM) as well as fellow label mates, male and female. For example about Tiffany and Nichkhun of 2AM or Taeyeon and Baekhyun of EXO is often written about since they were dating.

After establishing her acting career and staring in the popular K-Drama The K2 next to popular actor Ji Chang-wook, Yoona also got shipped with him a lot.

Legacy

By the time they debuted people were commenting viciously about them, for example: "The "female Super Junior" group of plastic teenage beauties, Girls' Generation, eight members strong or is it nine? By the time I bother counting, they'll be irrelevant and obsolete, or maybe that's just the hope". That was the typical sentiment. They received a lot of backlash. Nobody expected them to become as popular as they were and are.

However, they soon became the "Nation's girlgroup", the first group to ever hold that title. At their peak they were insanely popular in South Korea, universally loved, everyone knew them, they had the biggest fandom and the strongest public recognition. They had multiple shows on regular television channels which aren't dedicated to idols. When they guested in variety shows the ratings went up, they were dubbed as variety show queens. They had a huge impact on Korean pop culture, fashion and the following girlgroups. The group was named one of South Korea's "super brands" by the Korean Institute for Industrial Policy Studies in 2011. Their impact is often compared to that of the Spice Girls in England. Their debut song even became a protest anthem for students at Ewha Women's University in 2016. To this day they are considered to be iconic by fans and the general Korean public.

In 2016, Girls' Generation was identified as the most legendary and influential female idol group throughout K-Pop history, (chosen by a panel of 30 experts in the Korean Music Industry).

Unsurprisingly they set trends for years to come within the K-Pop fandom. The narrative is that fancams and especially individual fancams started with the fancam of Yuri during their "Oh!" performance at Namyangju Central Stadium in 2010.

Many also believe that the visual position became common in K-Pop after companies saw the success of Yoona. The "visual" is the member who fits the Korean beauty standards the most and is therefore usually gaining traction for the group. During their debut in 2007 Yoona was the most popular member thanks to her outstanding appearance. She got many offers for CFs which got the people interested in Yoona and therefore SNSD. On top of that, she was cast as the lead in the drama "You are My Destiny" which was extremly popular and skyrocketed her career. Yoona represented what visuals can do for a group. She was her generation's "it girl" and basically fits every aspect of the Korean beauty standard.

They also had a significant amount of influence on Korean fashion. When "Gee" came out, not only had SNSD created the "Gee" syndrome, but they've also created the skinny jean craze which ran through South Korea and reached across the world. The colorful jeans ended up becoming a statement piece of the early to mid 2010s. As the song was so addicting that it became one of that year's biggest hits in South Korea, and going on to hit record after record in the country while simultaneously gaining widespread attention throughout much of Asia and among global K-pop audiences. The song is still impacting the industry. "Gee" was the number-one song on the music program Music Bank for nine consecutive weeks in 2009 breaking the then-record for most consecutive song wins and the top-performing song of the 2000s decade on the digital music platform Melon. It won Song of the Year at the Melon Music Awards and Korean Music Awards, and it won Digital Daesang at the 24th Golden Disc Awards in 2009. Music critics have recognized "Gee" as a K-pop standard that helped shape the contemporary bubblegum sound and attributed its popularity in part to the music video. Nowadays, the band and fans are sad that the newer generation doesn't know the band that well and sometimes also isn't impressed by their achievements.

"Noise music" and five-songs-in-one have become a staple of the fourth generation. But "I Got A Boy" was the K-pop song to popularize it back in 2013. Nicknamed the "Korean Bohemian Rhapsody", it confused a lot of people and caught them off guard at the time as this was not exactly common at the time. But look at the industry now.

In 2013 they became the first Korean girl group to win a western award at the "YouTube Music Awards" where they won the Youtube Award for “Video of the Year” due to their incredibly catchy song and defeated the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, One Direction and PSY. Tiffany's iconic quote "YouTube is my best friend" also originated from this event. On top of that, this award has only been held by YouTube once so far, so Girls' Generation is of course the first and only K-pop artist to have won that title. They are still, to the year 2023, the only girl group to win "Album of the Year" (Album Daesang/Disk Daesang) at the Golden Disk Awards an annual South Korean major music awards ceremony and the overall most awarded girl group at the ceremony. In 2012, they became the first Korean girl group to sell one million copies of their album in Japan and the second Korean artist overall to be certified Million by the Recording Industry Association of Japan (the first being BoA).

"Into the New World" has become Millennials' anthem of solidarity: It has become an iconic song in South Korean protest culture: "It was used during the candlelight vigils seeking to impeach former President Park Geun-hye. It was used at Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. The song has come to convey the idea that 'we are all in this together, no matter what adversity we face'." In the LGBTQ community, the song also holds a special place being the unofficial anthem for pride month.

Each member has branched out into other forms of entertainment and has achieved success by doing so.

Controversies

SONEs have been part of a lot of fanwars and still are too some extend. Noteable are the tensions with EXO-Ls (EXO's fans), Cassies (TVXQ's fans), Wonderfuls (Wonder Girls' fans), Queens (T-ara's fans), Kamilias (KARA's fans), Onces (Twice's fans) and fans of IU while fanwars with Blackjacks (2NE1's fans) and ELFs (Super Junior's fans) really stood out.

Especially during their debut other fandoms were quick to call out any small missteps. When SNSD went on a radio show in 2008 and did some parodies of a member of Shinhwa's song while Tiffany said one part of the song reminded her of a goat's shout, SNSD had to issue full apologies for the actions/comments and both companies released statements.

The tension of Blackjacks and SONEs are a legendary rivalry within the K-Pop community. The fighting was continuous pretty much throughout both groups' careers. It culminated in a legendary clash in 2014. The big controversy started when Girls' Generation's "Mr. Mr.", 2NE1's "Come Back Home" and 4Minute's "Whatcha Doin' Today?" were pitted against each other at Inkigayo. The fans of 4Minute decided not to get involved, but Blackjacks and SONEs were each conviced that their group was going to win. Even idols were asked to pick sides like EXO's Chanyeol during Roomate. In the end, the fanwar was pretty pointless because 4Minute won, but the whole argument arose again during MAMA since both groups were nominated for "Artist of the Year" and "Best Female Group" and only died down when the award winners were announced. Nowadays, the fandoms are friendlier towards each other.

The origins of the tensions between ELFs and SONEs are unclear, some claim it started when Super Junior released "Mr. Simple", others say it started earlier. The war peaked during the infamous black ocean at the Dream concert in 2008. Eventually the tensions started to fade, even though it is unclear why the fanwars died down. It is speculated that the reason is that the groups themselves are quite close. They collaborated often with each other.

Hottest (2PM's fans) and SONEs weren't happy about the released "Cabi Song" which led to attacks between the fandoms. These days fans tend to look fondly back on these memories.

ONCEs and SONEs started fighting when it was announced that Twice was indeed going to be a 9 member group. SONEs accused Twice and JYP of imitating Girls' Generation (which they also accused 9Muses of), but the arguments became bigger when Twice released "Cheer Up" dressed as cheerleaders. SONEs accused them of mimicking SNSD's "Oh!" video. To add fuel to the fire a news article labeled Twice as "the next Girls' Generation". ONCEs replied by saying that SNSD was old and irrelevant and that the world had moved on. The zenith of these fights was around 2016 and 2017.

For Taeyeon's fans the fanwars also never really stopped since she's still the only person EXO's Baekhyun has publicly dated, Jessica's situation keeps getting fuel and Taeyeon and IU are still the two biggest soloists in South Korea.

Yoona is also still big target for hate as she is still too some extend the face of the group. By haters she gets labeled as "bland and basic" and hated for starting the "evil" Korean beauty standard, for having no talent and only being a pretty face and being the reason why everyone is dieting.

The group as a whole has always been criticized for their dieting habbits and sometimes their thinness which worried fans. Their diets circulated amongst fans ranging everywhere between 800 and 1500 calorie intake per day. The group got also criticized for undergoing plastic surgery, the cloning conspiracy theory of SM Entertainment as a whole and the 'Bermuda Triangle' nickname of Seohyun, Yoona and Yuri further adding fuel to the fire.

Sasaengs

Just like practically every other big and famous K-pop group Girls' Generation has Sasaeng fans. In 2014 Sunny left a warning tweet directed to all sasaeng fans to leave her alone. Jessica and Yoona has been followed around and in 2011 a sasaeng even tried to kidnap Taeyeon from the stage. This incident caused fans being upset over the low security standards, the slow reaction time of all of the members besides Sunny and the fact that SM Entertainment was quite secretive about this case.

Black Ocean

A lightstick is a way to show your artist your love and support. Black oceans are created if a large crowd doesn't turn on their light sticks as well as show any support or cheer for the performance of the artist. It’s a very cruel way to reveal the dislike towards the artist because it feels like performing for nobody since everyone is quiet and the room is dark.

At the Dream Concert on June 7, 2008 at the Seoul Jamsil Olympic Stadium (not long after their debut) Girls' Generation experienced a ten-minute black ocean. The band had already many fans so it wasn’t for the lack of SONEs rather than the fans themselves creating the situation. There was a fight over seats (some SONEs stole some of other bands' fans) and some fans ripping off the posters of one another which resulted in ELFs (fans of Super Junior) being upset and ally with other fandoms against the "disrespectful" fandom for creating a black ocean (and cheering for other bands especially Wonder Girls during their performance; there are also some rumours about knives and injuries). Even until now nobody really knows what was going on. Some people claim that ELFs were manipulators, other people insist that SONEs were alone at fault. Even others claim that the goat incident with Shinhwa and an advert in which TVXQ and SNSD participated in after which SONEs spread sexual harassment claims added fuel to the fire and that it was a planned alliance between the biggest fandoms at the concert (Cassies, triple S (fans of SS501), ELF and Wonderfuls) which had everyone on edge. However, Girls' Generation performed proficient, the band was able to put the boycott behind and move on. They talked about their experience saying they could see a little pink light in the darkness. The incident was legendary and even nowadays some fans are upset.

Taeyeon and Baekhyun

In June 2014 it was confirmed that Baekhyun and Taeyeon were dating, insiders even revealed that they had been for almost four months. The message caused fans being quite upset and both of them releasing apology statements after receiving a huge amount of hate. To make the situation worse EXO-Ls were already upset due to the departure of Kris. The reactions of fans were quite drastic. Fans thought they were sending each other love messages through Instagram because Taeyeon posted a picture of Oreos with the caption "I'm also going crazy because of you today #oreo". According to the fans Oreos are supposed to represent Baekhyun because of the Chinese characters for white (白 = Baek) and black (玄 = Hyun) and Baekhyun also had a post related to Oreos. This led to fans destroying Oreos. EXO-Ls were also especially upset because Baekhyun previously promised them that he won't date until he's 35. According to fans, Taeyeon should've acted more "maturely" as she is the big senior and should've taken into account that EXO is only rising in popularity while Baekhyun should've taken his group's scandal into account. The fans also felt betrayed because the two of them allegedly used Instagram as a form to communicate with each other while fans felt that it should be a way to communicate with fans and not leave secret messages.

Over the time some fans grew to like them or took it with humor, others never accepted it and reacted hateful towards Girls' Generation or Baekhyun, e.g. the one time Tiffany followed Baekhyun on Instagram. This article explains why there was so much hate from the Korean fans towards both of them by mentioning Baekhyun's past drinking or using slogans of EXO concerts to communicate with Taeyeon or Taeyeon's past scandals with male idols as well as being disrespectful towards fans while dating. However, in 2015 they were reported to have broken up due to never seeing each other because of their full schedule plans.

Nowadays, some fans speculate that they never dated, but that the relationship was used to distract the public from the scandal of Kris leaving EXO. They claim that the two of them both acted quite careless, especially compared to EXO's Chen who was able to hide his girlfriend until marriage. Other fans claim that the couple dated for far longer than SM and Dispatch revealed going back as far as EXO's debut. These fans speculate that the couple still pursues the relationship in secret. Therefore, the relationship gets brought up from time to time and is still the center of speculation. For example during Taeyeon's "Fine" stages some fans claimed that the song was for Baekhyun.

Jessica's departure

On September 29, 2014 Jessica announced via Weibo that she had been "forced" out of the group by saying: I was excited about our upcoming fan events only to shockingly be informed by my company and 8 others that as of today, I'm no longer a member. I'm devastated - my priority and love is to serve as a member of GG, but for no justifiable reason, I am being forced out. At first speculations of her account being hacked got around, but as two hours later only 8 members were spotted at Incheon Airport SM Entertainment's stock dropped 3% on the news. The fandom was sad. The rumours had been brewing for a long time so technically it wasn't super surprising, but people didn't want to accept it.

The next day she stated that in the early year the company as well as her fellow members were positive about the idea of her own fashion business Blanc and Eclare, but in September they changed opinion making her choose between closing her business or leaving the group. According to SM Entertainment Jessica informed the company in early spring that she would leave group after the following album, but caused problems for schedules by attending her individual activities. Jessica's final song with the group was "Divine" included in the repackaged version of their Japanese album "The Best". International fans mostly blamed Girls' Generation for suddenly kicking out Jessica without any notice and because of Jessica's Weibo statement at that time. As a coping mechanism many fans pit the blame on SM Entertainment saying the issue was between the company and her and due to the contractual nature the members don't have enough powers to make decisions. The theory was that SM Entertainment didn't like that Jessica had a side business as she started her own company which SM Entertainment wasn't profiting from and gave her some ultimatum regarding it. Meanwhile, Korean fans were mostly hating on Jessica and accusing her of being too selfish for leaving Girls' Generation. There were rumors that she was leaving since late 2013. They speculated it wasn't the business which was the problem but how it affected everything else due to her laziness and her increasingly missing schedules. Nowadays, fans accepted that they likely won't ever know what actually happened.

Despite the rumors Jessica's departure happened suddenly for fans. It wasn't long after the girls had resigned with SM Entertainment. They also had a fanmeet the day of her Weibo post. At that time, rumors quickly resurfaced and spread amongst fans. A lot of people speculated that Jessica and Taeyeon had conflicts throughout the years which led to the situation (another previous rumor stated that Jessica was supposed to be part of the sub-unit TTS making TTJ, but depending on the rumor either Jessica or Taeyeon had a problem with that leading to Seohyun replacing her. Despite that there are still Taeyeon x Jessica shippers to this day). Others speculated that she left over disagreements over marriage because she had been linked romatically to business man Tyler Kwon. The rumor further developed into her marrying him next May and going to fashion school which Tyler Kwon later denounced. Others claimed that she met up with the lawyers of JYJ which said lawyers later denied. Some fans also claimed that Taeyeon broke down in tears at a TaeSiSeo fan signing stating that all she wanted to do was to protect Girls' Generation.

In August 2015 both parties finally made an agreement to end Jessica's contract. She later released a statement saying that she and SM Entertainment officially parted. Nowadays, Jessica promotes under Coridel Entertainment and announced her first solo album in February 2016.

The fandom was somewhat split at that point. There were the actual OT9 fans who wanted to support Jessica alongside the remaining 8 members as SNSD. Some did that while remaining under the delusion that the members would secretly meet up with Jessica and still be friends which would eventually lead up to an OT9 comeback. There were Jessica Fans who really only liked Jessica, so they happily followed her and only her. And there were a lot of OT8 fans who didn't like Jessica or did like her, but didn't care to follow her solo work.

In 2020 she released her first YA novel called "Shine" which she followed up with her second book "Bright" in 2022. This led to a lot of discussions amongst fans about how much of the book is fiction. It certainly leaves room for a lot of speculation (fans claim it was her intention). The plot follows Rachel who is a trainee at DB Entertainment with a Korean-American background. This led to fans speculating that this is a malicious "self-insert fanfiction" with a victimized Mary Sue as main character. Another clue is allegedly the nine member girlgroup "Girls Forever" of DB Entertainment the story is about which has some uncanny similarities to SNSD of SM Entertainment. One character is called "Sumin" which led to fans speculating whether that is supposed to be Taeyeon as fans of Yuri like to post pictures of the members and compare them to "What Does The Fox Say" characters. Fans created theories that the creator of the webtoon is a SONE and Sumin was based on Taeyeon. "Mina" is allegedly Sooyoung as Mina is a "chaebol" and Sooyoung has a rich background. Later Jessica herself claimed that "Leia" was based on her sister Krystal of f(x). Fans further speculated before the initial release of "Shine" that this is her way of "spilling the tea without getting sued". Many were hoping for her to expose all the secrets only to be disappointed that there wasn't much new content regarding the group rather than "open secrets" of the industry as a whole and DB Entertainment (the second book dives a little further into the group's relationship). A rumor that she outed Seohyun as gay also spread amongst SONEs. Many fans however also regard the release of the book as distasteful as characters are linked to literal crimes. This and the narrative that no member can be identified in the book because they are all mean girl cliches and cliches do not represent real people led to another group of fans believing that the entire book is fictional. Furthermore, the story itself was critizised by fans for being unoriginal and badly written with bland characters. Fans are also enraged by the marketing tools she uses, for example pushing her release date for the second book back to the date she officially left SNSD. They claim that her marketing tactis have been damaging to SNSD because people obviously speculated and harassed the members and that she knows what she is doing. In an interview she said: "It's going to be like an Easter egg hunt. Looking for clues and who's who, what's what, what's true, what's not." The book itself is catty according to fans because it only focuses on the worst parts of K-Pop and paints everything as negative. Rachel is also according to fans unlikeable as she has a lot of priviledge which she takes for granted and lacks empathy. She also claims that it was her who was bullied while she was the one with the bullying scandal. It reads like revenge. It won Song of the Year at the Melon Music Awards and Korean Music Awards, and it won Digital Daesang at the 24th Golden Disc Awards in 2009. Music critics have recognized "Gee" as a K-pop standard that helped shape the contemporary bubblegum sound and attributed its popularity in part to the music video.

People were losing their minds when the version got leaked. The fandom theory is that a staff member leaked it (and subsequently got fired). CMIYC was supposed to be a Japanese OT9 comeback, but then Jessica left and they had to refilm everything and also decided to make it a Korean comeback. A lot of people think the reason the physical single was so boring (just a black jewel case) was because they didn't want to redo any photo shoots.
• SNSD Tokyo Dome - Girls' Generation "The Best Live" at Tokyo Dome is a solo concert held on December 9, 2014 at Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan by the band. This is the group's first concert without Jessica who was dismissed from the group on September 30, 2014. This concert is really special to SNSD and SONEs as it feels like the saddest and memorable concert from them. Sooyoung reacted to it on her Youtube channel "the sootory" stating "it was the hardest but most memorable performance". "Into The New World" was the highlight of the performance according to her. "Divine" makes fans cry as well as it feels like her goodbye song (she sings the line "We are always one"). Girls' Generation became the second K-pop girl group after Kara to hold a concert there. The concert gathered an audience of 50,000 attendees.
• ITNW ballad version - The emotional ballad version of "Into The New World" during their concert in Tokyo Dome in 2014 touches fans' hearts ("7 years and this still hits me. The fact that they cried and this cheerful songs suddenly became a ballad is enough to make me cry as well while watching this"; "No matter what fandom you're crying or sad watching this") as the band looked back on their debut days seven years later. Their audition tapes were played out in the giant screen behind them as the girls took the stage. This was no doubt an emotional performance for the current 8-member group, as the song holds many precious memories. Not only did they sing their hearts out, but the girls got very caught up in the emotions and memories that the song represents for them and could seen barely able to sing as their emotions took over them ("The fact Sunny was fighting her tears from the very beginning of the song makes me tear up everytime"). According to Sooyoung, it was the highlight of their concert. They gathered in a circle because they had previously performed a ballad version of their song "Complete" which also included this in the choreography.
• Yuri forgot the lyrics in Honey stage - It is a legendary mistake Yuri made in 2007. She forgot the lyrics to her part and just hummed it. Fans were shocked because there are eight members in the group so she was given about one line to sing and she forgot that one line. Taeyeon's face reacting to that mistake was also laughed about. According to fans, it at least proved that they were singing live. They reminisced about the incident on Amazing Saturday.
• Seohyun Hello Dracula - Hello Dracula is a 2020 K-Drama starring Seohyun as main character. It's a lesbian character which is considered to be very progressive by fans in the consertive country. The drama made a lot of fans very emotional.
• viral fancam of Sooyoung in full hoodie in rehearsal - Typically, before a multi-group concert event begins, each act performs a stage rehearsal before they get into their costumes. This was the case back on July 27, 2015, when Girls’ Generation was performing at Music Core Ulsan. However, Sooyoung took rehearsal apathy to the next level that day while performing their song "Party", resulting in a fancam that would crack K-Pop fans up for years to come. She also reacted to it on her Youtube channel "the sootory" stating "Isn't this video showing Yuri sloppier than me?" revealing that Yuri had a hangover that day.

• Karma Butterfly - A Japanese release dearly loved by SONEs as one of the best B-sides. The lyrics talk about expressing one's true self. The chair choroegraphy is also dearly beloved.

• Mentor Tiffany in GP999: she was a mentor in the category "K-pop Masters" for the show. Knowledgable SONE:

• Soshified - Soshified describes itself as "#1 source for all things Girls' Generation/소녀시대/少女時代/SNSD!". It was a forum for international SONEs and dearly loved ("This forum was way ahead of its time. It is so organised and was a really great space to fangirl. Remember those cute sparkly pixel member gifs?"). It had great guides and facts. Nowadays, most people probably moved to twitter as social media has pretty much replaced forums (Soshified also has an account there), but all the threads are still there and it is still up and running but only few people post there. You could watch programs they were on in the forum. They had one of the best and fastest fan subbing teams at that time. There was also Soshified Radio. And Soshified Style where they would post outfit details and also makeup and hair tutorials. The forum also organized SNSD's first US fanmeet in New York. They also designed merch for KCON and anniversary projects. All the girls had official accounts and would drop in the chat once in a while. Tiffany was definitely the most active, but Sunny, Yuri, and Sooyoung would also sometimes drop by. Soy, or Soyuri, the owner of SSF is now a food influencer. You can find her on Instagram and TikTok. She was pretty close to the girls during the forum's heyday. Current staff states that the decline happened because of Twitter, people becoming adults and moving on, a lot former staff and members being invested in OT9, companies recognizing Western fans by offering subs themselves and SNSD not putting out a lot of group content.
• Deleted SNSD "Mr. Mr." files - SM Entertainment stated that data for SNSD's "Mr. Mr." MV had been corrupted and the comeback could be delayed for up to 2 weeks. Fans were flabbergasted because they couldn't believe that a company like SME doesn't have several back-ups. Both groups would soon disband. Afterwards, she joined the show. In the first episodes she talked a lot about her regrets of missing out on Girls' Generation and her opportunities in general. Fans were also very impressed by her initial audition saying that this is the difference between someone who already debuted and a trainee. The good faith of the fans didn't last long though. In the first challenge she became part of the "avengers" team with all the popular trainees to perform "Into the new world", the debut song of Girls' Generation. Beforehand, he gave a press conference saying he would perform with an idol not mentioning the name though. At the performance he showed up alone. Taeyeon's name got leaked through rehersal footage. Shortly after the leak, Wiz Khalifa stated on Twitter that Taeyeon had "backed out" of the performance minutes before the performance. Later he said that Taeyeon claimed that she had gone to a hospital the night before the show. Taeyeon corrected him and this started the Twitter beef. In the end, miscommunication seemed to be the problem. SM Entertainment apparently would not allow her to perform the duet after a problem occurred with the music the night before the show. • North Korean defector who wanted to see SNSD - In November 2017, a North Korean soldier with the surname Oh made headlines when he dramatically escaped North Korea to cross the DMZ. Netizens claimed that the video released looks like a scene out of an action movie. The North Korean soldier was shot multiple times near the DMZ line and was dragged to safety by South Korean soldiers. When Oh regained consciousness he stated that he came to South Korea of his own free will. He talked a lot about music. The hospital staff played music videos by Girls' Generation for him and he enjoyed listening to K-pop songs. His favorite song from Girls' Generation is "Gee".

Fans were frustrated after a certain amount of time of false claims since it was also known among fans who actually trained with them ("we can probably fill an arena of "I would've been in SNSD"-girls at this point") In 2019 Taeyeon expressed her frustration and called them out on it.

The first was sympathetic, and said that Jessica was forced out of SNSD, despite reaching agreements with SM about Blanc, because the other eight members were unhappy about the profit distribution from Jessica's business and their parents kept going to SM to protest. The second said that Jessica wasn't kicked out, she was planning to leave SNSD because she wanted to get married and go to fashion school. That was when public perception of Jessica started to shift. I don't think I need to explain how fans view idols dating. As soon as the narrative became "blame the boyfriend," Jessica never stood a chance. Under that username, the male idol made blatant comments about SNSD, calling them "trash", accusing them of getting plastic surgeries, posting SNSD's unappealing photos, etc. As fans and especially SONEs expressed their anger he issued an apology ("[...] Even though I was still young when I wrote those comments, it is definitely something I wrote. That's why I am sorry to the Girls' Generation sunbaenims, their fans, and Carats, who were hurt by this. [...]") His past resurfaced in 2022. On June 25 to 26, 2022, Seventeen opened their world tour, "Be the Sun," having Seoul as their first stop. Senior idols Taeyeon and SHINee's Key found time to show up at the concert. The members also mentioned them. It stirred discussions among K-netizens. In an online community, some talked about the male star and conveyed their curiosity about whether he felt awkward seeing the senior female idol. While some fans criticized him, others defended him.
• Seohyun for "Train to Busan" - Seohyun was offered a role in "Train to Busan" (Sohee's role), but SM rejected it. Fans felt like she was held back and mismanaged by SM and are to this day salty about it.
• Tiffany had in her predebut days a MySpace account and a Xanga page. Her posts there were very reminiscent of how ABG (Asian baby girls) posted in the early 2000, with alternating upper and lower letters and formating ~sO cUtE~. On her Xanga page one of funniest posts was when her brother got a pet goldfish. She posted among other things "you stupid fuckin bitch i hope your goldfish is a PIRANHA in disguise". Fans thought Tiffany was precious and cute.
• Super Girl Project - In 2005, SM Entertainment debuted Super Junior. The group was originally called "Super Junior 05" as they were supposed to have a graduation system, also known as the "revolving system", as a way of organizing the members of a group. The basic idea of the concept is that the members of a group aren’t permanent and can "graduate" out of the group and get replaced by new members. This way the group would always have young members, hence the name Super Junior. Eventually, fans would come to love the members and protest against the graduation of the members which led to SM Entertainment deciding to make Super Junior a permanent group. Before that though, SM had proceeded to plan a similar large girl group counterpart. SM put together a showcase comprised of internal trainees. Most were veteran trainees and the total number of girls featured was 11. However, this project group's line-up didn't last long. The line-up went through its first major revision. Out of 11 girls, only 6 of them stay in the group. This was Jessica, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun who were already in the line-up and would stay until the end. There were more line-up revisions coming, but it is common knowledge that those six made it to the final line-up. They pretty much had secured their place in the project group even from the get go. They added five other trainees instead including T-ara's Soyeon, former M.I.L.K member Hyunjin and Stella Kim. Stella Kim was plotted to be the "face of the group" alongside Yoona. Due to various reasons, SM decided to replaced the oldest (Seo Hyunjin) and the youngest (Lee Hwanhee) members with two relatively new trainees, Taeyeon and Korean-American Stephanie Hwang (Tiffany). At that time, both Taeyeon and Tiffany had "only" trained for about two years. This would mark their probably most well-known line-up with Soyeon as the leader for the so-called female counterpart of Super Junior. At this point, netizens started calling this project group "Super Girls". In fact, SM Entertainment initially planned to debut this 11-member girl group. They even already took group picture of them. Despite the plan to debut this project group, SM decided to add more people to the line-up. Stella Kim and Jang Hajin ended up being cut from the group. There was a rumor that it was because of their lack of dancing skills. As for Stella, some also said that her parents refused to let her debut before she get a degree which seemed more plausibel to fans as she was one of the most famous SM trainees at that time. It was said that both Stella Kim and Jang Hajin had quit the project group to focus on their education. This was proven by the fact that both of them were full-time college students afterwards. The third roster revision had Sunny, Lee Hwanhee, and Heo Chanmi as the newest addition. Heo Chanmi joined the group as the youngest one. This line-up had 12 members, unlike the initial plan of 11 members. At this point (somewhere around mid 2006), the group went a lot of trials to decide who would get cut out from the group. Sites like Naver and Daum had posted this lineup prediction, with Sunny being the "mysterious trainee". Both Lee Hwanhee and Heo Chanmi were rumored to be cut from the group. Some source said that SM actually planned to debut the group with this 10 members line-up. Unfortunately, main vocalists and leader Soyeon decided to quit due to "harsh" training. She wasn't the only one who felt that way. Taeyeon had also thought about quitting. She even had runaway for one day before coming back to the training process. SNSD would debut in 2007, shortly after Soyeon, Chanmi, and Hwanhee left the group. Chanmi was apparently cut for being too young. Soyeon would debut as member of T-ara and state "Back then it was tiring. And I went through much hardship." while going on that she is still friends with the members and happy that SNSD is doing well. Chanmi debuted under the same label, but would go on to be quite unlucky. She said, "I was a trainee for a long time. I had participated in the recording for SNSD's title track, and even completed the photoshoot. Since I was young, I was upset at not being able to debut with them. However, I was understanding because I knew that it hadn't been that long since I started training. I supported the SNSD unnis and hoped for the best." In 2012, Seohyun's bestfriend Hwanhee debuted under Worthy Entertainment after 10 years of training as a solo artist. The girls later admitted that they cried when they first heard the name of the band. In a group interview, the girls admitted they hated their name when they first heard it. At the time, not many groups were named in Korean, so they had expected something cool in English.
