Twice is a nine-member kpop girl group consisting of members Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. The group was formed in 2015 by JYP Entertainment on the survival show Sixteen where sixteen girls competed for spots in the company's upcoming girl group. The group debuted on 20 October 2015 with the mini-album "The Story Begins."
History
February 11, 2015 Jin Young Park announced a new reality survival show, Sixteen. May 5, 2015 the first episode aired. The final 7 member line up was Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun and Chaeyoung. Two additional members were added to the line up, Tzuyu due to her popularity and visuals, and Momo due to her impressive dance skills.
2015 they appeared on a variety show, and member Tzuyu waved a flag of the Republic of China/Taiwan. A Taiwanese pro unification activist accused her of being pro Taiwanese independence. Because of this she got massive hate and apologized with a video.[1] She was supported by the then president of Taiwan as well as other Taiwanese politicians.[2] Her apology video was supported by mainland Chinese publications, particularly the Global Times.
July 9, 2018 they released a reissue of their extended play "What is love?" titled "Summer Nights" with the song "Dance the night away". Chaeyoung was accused of copying Blackpinks Lisa due to Chaeyoung dyeing her hair orange and having bangs during this comeback. [3]
April 22, 2019 they released a extended play titled "Fancy You" with the title track "Fancy". Following the release of the EP and the announcement of their world tour, Mina went on hiatus due to anxiety and other mental health reasons. [4] Following the end of the Heisei era in Japan and the start of the Reiwa era, member Sana celebrated the end of the era on Instagram and received hate.[5] The release of Fancy was criticized by male Korean onces, due to the change from a cute concept to a girl crush/mature concept and their promotions in Western countries. This led to a boycott by male Korean onces of all Twice music and products/
September 23, 2019 they released an extended play titled "Feel Special" with the title track of the same name. The song, written by their CEO, JYP, is written about the pressure Twice felt being idols (especially member Sana). Some of the lyrics of the song were seen by fans of BTS (armies) as being written about BTS due to a mishearing of the Korean lyrics as being the BTS members names.
October 26, 2020 Twice released their 2nd studio album I Can't Stop Me. This comeback was highly praised and criticized. This was due to the more mature music style, rather than what Twice had done in the past. Many fans embraced the change as Twice had grown as women and were more mature, whilst other fans disliked it as it was very different musically and stylistically than what Twice had done before. Despite this its one of the most known and loved Twice songs and albums.
