Side by Side (Star Trek: TOS zine)/Special Editions

Why Special Editions? After the success of the first Kirk/Spock Online Festival in late 2000, kira-nerys announced a second in April of 2002 and went on to run a total of six Kirk/Spock Online Festivals between 2000 and 2005. Although the first KSOF was published (and remained) in a separate section on Lady Kardasi's Domain, all of the rest were published in Special Editions of the Side by Side ezine.

While Side by Side Special Editions always contained stories and art from the Kirk/Spock Online Festivals, they also sometimes included stories and artwork from other challenges run by kira-nerys, and where a particular festival had more than one 'wave' of content this could be split across different Special Editions.

Special Edition 1

Side by Side Special Edition 1 was published June 2002. (Web Archive Link), Archived version All of the stories and art in this edition belonged to wave 1 of the second Kirk/Spock Online Festival. This issue was not subject to the usual publication restrictions.

"This issue (Special edition June 2002) of SBS is unique in the way that all contributions may be posted elsewhere on the Internet immediately. This is because they are part of the KSOF 2002 and does not apply to regular editions of the ezine."[1]

  • Before the Dawn by kira-nerys. When apart, Spock and Kirk are finally realizing what's truly in their hearts.
  • The End of the Game by Lady Charena. An undetected visitor tells us about Jim and Spock - and the end of the game...
  • Inside by Menolly. An alien being inhabits Spock (unknown to anyone else) and breaks down his internal resistance to desire.
  • I Was JT's Love Slave by K1of7. Jim challenges T'Pring (or another Vulcan male) to fight over Spock. Spock doesn't know this and is surprised to find Kirk in his bed later. What will happen?
  • Moonlight and Roses by Ketsu Rei. Spock is agonizing over going to Gol - purging all emotions - or telling Kirk the truth. But this time, instead of going off to go through the Kolinahr, he stays with Kirk and tells him that he loves him. What happens next?
  • The Summons by T'Lin. T'Pau summons Spock to Vulcan for a proper Vulcan marriage so he can give his clan their long overdue heirs. But marriage would mean that Spock would have to leave the fleet. How does Kirk react to that?
  • Sunrise Versions 1 & 2 by Francesca Vitale. The boys talk.
  • What the Heart Remembers on AO3 by Killa. Saving the world is all in a day's work, but can heroes ever really go home again?
  • Gol Beckons by kira-nerys. When Spock is at Gol, he dreams of Kirk.

[Moonlight and Roses] Reposted with permission from Jenna Sinclair:

I read Moonlight and Roses last night; what a nice surprise! I really like the premise of your story: that Spock might re-think his decision to go to Gol. I am *always* in favor of turning canon elements on their head, especially movie canon, so you found a good audience in my willing, reading eyes.

You also wrote an element into your story that is just about guaranteed to make most readers melt: the fellows dancing together. Years ago, this was rarely written, but it seems that nowadays folks are much more likely to attempt it. I found your scene with them dancing to be intriguing, partly because of the Irish reel! I am not 100% certain of what a reel is, but I have the impression of a somewhat energetic dance, and the image of the two of them dancing to that raised my eyebrows! Different and effective. I also like very much that you had them dance three dances, not just one. The use of Carol Marcus was wonderful. Gave you the opportunity to really expand your plot and add emotional dimensions that I greatly appreciated. Depth to Kirk's character through his pain about Peter, especially, and not being able, in his own mind, to be a father-figure to the boy. Very nice.

I do think that the opening to the story was a bit choppy and could have used some smoothing out. But I thought the writing itself improved as the story went on. Maybe you were on a roll?

I also am not entirely sanguine with the number of point-of-view changes you used. Especially towards the end where they seemed to chop up the story. Maybe it was also the symbol you used for the pov change. I found that unnecessary, and think you should instead have completed your sentences (at least, in my download the pov ending sentence wasn't always completed--I wondered if that was just me or if you really wrote them like that) and used the more traditional spacing between paragraphs to indicate a new pov. And I wouldn't have switched so many times.

But a really nice story that was a pleasure to read. Thank you for writing it! Hope to see more K/S from you in the future.[2]

[I Was JT's Love Slave] Comments from the Kirk/Spock Archive[3]

[Hair of the Dog] Oh Physhnor, awesome story! I really want to draw a picture of poor Uhura clowning around and partying the night away in the flowerbed. That's just the most cheerful image :-p P.S. Er... what was Chekov up to? ;-) (i love making fun of him)[4]

[Sleeping Beauty] I am so sorry I missed this story when you first posted it. Nothing like feedback that's three months late! But I have to tell you, this is ONE POWERFUL STORY! Wow! I think the imagery is just wonderful. I could feel the cave and the coolness of Spock's skin, the pain they were both experiencing, and Jim's fear that Spock was going to die. I loved your descriptions of the gambit of emotions Jim went though as he was worried about Spock during the days of their recovery. And I LOVED how McCoy was standing there when they looked up! Too cute! Anyway, this is definitely going in my "keeper" file. Thanks for the great story! I wanted you to know how much I enjoyed it, even if it is three months late![5]

[Ultimate Submission] really cool and unique idea to use the nerve pinch that way. i haven't seen it anywhere else so far. may need to borrow the concept one day![6]

  • The Row by Rae Trail. Written for the [KSOF] 2003 first round. Kirk and Spock wake up on a prison ship.

  • Escape from Gothos by Dina. Trelane of Gothos has decided he needs a pet and Kirk will do admirably. He's quick thinking (for an inferior life form), agile and healthy. He's also house-broken and learns quickly. Trelane's "parents" are almost convinced. How does Spock unconvince them?
  • Another Piece of Action by Farfalla. Somewhat post-trilogy (i.e. after the whole whale movie thing), McCoy is having disturbing visions of pinstripes....
  • Price of Silence by Acidqueen. Valeris remembers and reflects about Spock and his relationships.

  • Own Private Inferno by Dreadnought. Story where Kirk is hot rather than Spock is cold.

[The Art of Love] Ha! Jim out-Vulcaned Spock! The logical order of asking his parents and the planning and even T'Pau! The jealousy was a nice touch.[7]

[The Art of Love] I love it when Spock growls. That was so very hot...and sneaky on the part of Jim..He really went all out, doing it the logical way, and Spock truly was amazed by it all. How could he refuse him.... Loved this story, well done.[7]

[The Art of Love] What an amazingly beautiful story! Kirk flirting with Spock is practically canon. I`m re-watching TOS episodes sporadically and the more often I watch, the more the flirting is obvious. But I really loved the way Jim courted Spock so logically! Even contacting T`Pau to get her to agree, and the Federation Council and Spock`s parents - there was simply no way for Spock to say no. And the sex was so very hot. Thank you for this.[7]

[The Art of Love] That was wonderful! Courting a Vulcan logically makes so much sense, after all. :-) And the sex at the end was quite yummy, too.[7]

[Meddling and Melding] I love this story! You have a great style and you managed to depict the complex relationship between Kirk and Spock. The characterization of Kirk is somewhat unusual, but I liked him a lot in this open-minded, not-only-girls way. My favourite here was fairy-godmother McCoy, though. That it's an alternative timeline, is quite fine -I never liked Spock's going to Gol, anyway![8]

[Meddling and Melding] This story is definitely in my top 5 for Kirk/Spock, probably in the top 10 for fanfiction as a whole-great story, very believable and compelling and all that a story of romantic tension ought to be. _ Yay! I love Bones in this story especially-he's actually an interesting and compelling character without being a romantic lead, and his observations of Kirk at the Academy are entertaining and insightful. I like your interpretation of Kirk as (what I guess I would call) 'pansexual'-sort of, anybody halfway decently attractive, funloving, and not-looking-for-a-real-relationship is welcome in his bed (besides Mitchell and Spock, who weren't just for kicks.) Also, the fact that someone has to get really drunk in order to set things in motion is a really common idea, but for some reason one that I like. Maybe because it implies their accustomed stoicness, and the stoicness is really what I like...don't know.[8]

[Meddling and Melding] I never believed in Gol, either; this feels much more real and true. Thanks for writing this story and for sharing it with us. The second half of this story is underlined - paragraph after paragraph is underlined. I'm assuming that this formatting isn't intentional, so you may want to fix it. (It makes your story a lot harder to read, and a story as good as this one SHOULD be read.)[9]

[Meddling and Melding] Ch.1: This is so good!! Thank you for sharing it

Ch.2: Omg split timeline fic This world building is masterfully done. I love the idea that Jim and Gary were exes.

Ch.3: //By the time he had given Bones the hypo, saw to it that he used it and returned to the outer office, she was back with a tray containing not only a big thermal carafe of coffee but two double servings of orange juice and a large selection of sweet rolls as well. The inclusion of the large amount of orange juice made Jim fairly certain that she knew exactly what was wrong with her boss and had been playing dumb to protect him.// Chapel is an MVP // "Damn it all, Jim. He can barely tolerate an accidental touch or one necessary in an emergency from anyone else but he lets you touch him ....... constantly ....... and he enjoys it. In a Vulcan, that screams 'BONDED' in capital letters."// This whole chapter is amazing, but I particularly loved this part.

Ch.6: What a perfect ending! //"How to break the news to Bones that he's going to be best man at a wedding." "Fascinating."// I LAUGHED[10]

[With Relish] This time it's space relish that's got the captain acting loopy. The best thing about this one is Spock's analytical insights into the mechanics of sex with cloven-hooved aliens.[11]

[With Relish] Funny and touching. I loved this part at the beginning : "Errghine (note - name of alien Kirk is attempting to seduce) did not fit into any of the three main and four sub-categories of beings most commonly selected by Kirk for sexual release." Great first time story![12]

[With Relish] This is actually my favorite story by you. :) For some reason, I'm a big fan of aphrodisiac stories, and yours was a special delight. Descriptions, emotions, actions--they were all perfect.[12]

[Come for Me] I read it four times... This has to be one of the best concepts I've read, and I normally don't like Spock so in control - but this was pure sexyness. This is giving me such inspiration, I can't [bear] it! <3 <3 <3[13]

[Come for Me] "Vulcans took orders easily, unless they'd rather not." ROFL! Love it.[13]

Special Edition 6

  • Family Matters by Slasherfem & PetLeopard56. Admiral Kirk's nephew is being sexually harassed by a superior officer, whose commanding officer is an old friend of Kirk's. But Kirk's old friend is strangely reluctant to do anything about it.
  • The Best Costume at the Party by Farfalla. Second Place in the KSOF 2004/2005. Cadet Kirk shares a delicious encounter with a new friend he meets at an Academy costume party. Only trouble is, he thinks Spock's only *dressed* as a Vulcan for Halloween!
  • Correspondence by Angel Grace. Amanda takes a frying pan-shaped cluebus and hits Spock over the head with it.
  • Wounds That Bind on AO3 by K'Chaps. First place in the KSOF 2004/2005. After Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Kirk and Spock struggle to make sense of the events and find a new path.
  • Born(e) of Long Association by Mycroft Holmes. My take on the crash/cave cliché.
  • Verdant Lusts by Ray. Third Place in the KSOF 2004/2005. At the Starfleet Academy, Spock changes Kirk's life and saves his career.
  • Afloat by Farfalla. Pon farr puts some pretty bizarre images into Spock's subconscious.
  • Al Fa by S. Kert. Kirk is captured during what seems to be a routine diplomatic mission. Now the crew of the Enterprise is torn between Starfleet and loyalty to their captain when they are ordered to leave orbit without him.

[The Best Costume at the Party] I really enjoyed this one. Short, sweet, and wooh, frelling *hot*! Yum, yum, yum... Wolfie sez: two dicks up![14]

[The Best Costume at the Party] Great! Wonderful! I always wanted to read K / S takes place in the academy. The story was written well, my stomach gurgled and this is proof that I enjoyed very much.[14]

[The Best Costume at the Party] So he never kissed an alien before, huh? Well, tom-cat Kirk sure made up for it later in life. I read this story before but I'm happy for a chance to review. Here's my critical review in full: THIS IS AWESOME! AWESOME, I SAY![14]
