Romantic comedy is a genre primarily in film and television with "light-hearted, humorous plotlines, centered on romantic ideals such as that true love is able to surmount most obstacles"[1] or in other words a perfect combination of romance and comedy. Two notable examples of a rom com are When Harry Met Sally and Pretty Woman - many actually attribute them as the start of the genre, although romantic comedies have been around since early Hollywood at least (see Wikipedia's list of romantic comedy films).
Rom coms, while popular viewing material, are relatively unpopular sources for inspiring new fandoms. However, many fanworks, especially fanfiction, use the popular tropes and storylines that the films populated such as the football/popular guy and the nerd/geeky loner girl get together (often seen in High School AUs) or Cinderella-derived where one character is poor and the other is rich or bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks and the good girl (or the other way around).
