Rolaine Smoot was an old-time member of fandom and went to conventions.

She was the editor of the Real Ghostbusters zine, Crossing the Streams, and was a member of the Stone Hill Science Fiction Association ("Tampa Bay's most successful science fiction club"),[1][2] based on a photo of her donated to WorldCon photo albums.

Her name can also be found on a supporter list for Burned Fur,[3] a furry group dedicated to being anti-"bestiality, plushophilia, [and] fursuit sex."[4]

Memorials

Smoot passed away in 2018 at 73.

From the MediaWest blog:

Rolaine Smoot died in her sleep on 12/21/2018. Rolaine had been diagnosed a couple of years ago with Alzheimers and between that and severe arthritis she had quit coming to the con. She was also involved in Florida Fandom, starting with Star Trek cons back in the day. Rolaine's daughter suggested donating in her name to the American Indian College Fund. https://collegefund.org/ [5]

From the Stonehill Newsletter:

Rolaine Smoot was a long time grandmother of fandom. Starting in the middle 1970’s she contributed to Star Trek zines such as “Naked Times,” and “Matter/Antimatter.” It was in the later 70’s that Rolaine was instrumental in bringing Star Trek conventions to central Florida. She was on the committee of Trekcons in the Tampa Bay area, which brought in such stars as James Doohan, DeForest Kelly, George Takei, and Nichelle Nichols. While keeping up her zine writing, she joined the Stonehill SF Association in 1982. She would take over as the Necronomicon dealers room coordinator in 1982 and continue that until 2016 when health problems forced her to quit. Rolaine was part of a group of fans that won Best Humorous Costume at the WorldCon in Atlanta in 1986. On the fandom front, Rolaine wrote and drew for Real Ghostbusters, including editing and publishing the first RGB adult zine, “Crossing the Streams.” She became a fan of Stargate, attending Gatecon in Vancouver for several years.
