Nobody's heroes is a post-Captain America: Civil War fanfiction by boleyn13. It was posted to AO3 own in 2016. The fanfic is divisive but popular. The work is part of two collections on AO3, Team Consequences and Team Decency (Salty Team Iron Man Fics). The author states her three goals in the fic are to not pardon Team Cap, not reunite the team to battle Thanos, and avoid placing all the blame on Thaddeus Ross.

Author's Summary

“This job... we try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn't mean everybody. But if we can't find a way to live with that, next time... maybe nobody gets saved.”

At the end of the day Steve did save everybody. He saved Bucky from Tony, his team from the government, the world from the Sokovia Accords. Some time would probably have to pass for things to blow over, and then everything would go back to normal. Couple of days. Tops. After all Team Cap saved everybody, showing the world how dangerous the accords were, how easily they could be abused. Even their supporters had to come to their senses now.

Yet five days after Siberia nobody feels safe. Things don’t calm down and suddenly it’s again Steve against the rest of the world. Only now it’s not some international organisation or government but the people. The ones he had saved. Slowly Captain America must realize that they don’t feel saved but angry, hurt and scared.

The people demand justice for those who were really trying to save them and paid the price for it.[1]

Reactions & Reviews

I think the ultimate test of a fic should be whether it appeals to people who don't agree with it's premise. I don't think Tony Stark is evil, but I've read good fics where he goes off the deep end. I don't think Steve Rogers was right during Captain America: civil War, but I've read good fic and meta about why he believed he was correct. This fic, very much fails the test.

It's a bash fic, plain and simple. Tony Stark is right and everyone's opinions are shaped around how much they like him. Hope Van Dyne? Okay. Pepper and Rhodey? Okay as long as they share his viewpoints to the tee. CIA operative Everett Ross. Morally unambiguous. Sharon Carter? A traitor to womankind for thinking Steve Rogers might be right. What was that turn of phrase? Yes, the fic actually suggests that Natasha Romanov and Sharon Carter set feminism back a decade. I'm not kidding. T'challa is hated by his people. T'challa. This fic bashes T'challa.

Honestly the writer is technically competent and could have made this fic really interesting if the opposing side had motivations and some characters were shrouded in shades of grey instead of being pure evil for opposing the mighty whumped lord Tony Stark.[2]

[charminghex99] Thank you for this amazing story. It was heartbreaking but addictive. You have shown such character depth, even for the characters that I cannot identify with because of their stupidity. You make the superheroes human, but more amazing for their flaws. Or at least the ones who can acknowledge them anyway, and then strive to do better. This fic is one of my absolute favorites. So thank you for your hard work. Your creativity. And for this wonderful world you have shared with us.[3]

[katling] Thank you for this wonderful story! It's been a great ride from start to finish and so nice to see real consequences from the mess that was Civil War. It's sad that it's come to an end and all good things do.

And good on Sophie for pointing out the truth to Steve - that everything he did, all the chaos, deaths and destruction he caused, did absolutely nothing to help Barnes. In fact, as Shuri mentions, he only made it worse for him because if he's ever defrosted, he'll have to face the consequences for Berlin, Bucharest and Leipzig.

It was also interesting that you touched on the quandary Maximoff poses because both sides were right in that argument. The collar is inhumane but what other option is there in the short term? Bars aren't going to hold Maximoff, placing guards at the sort of risk Maximoff poses would be unconscionable and they can't keep her permanently sedated, for health reasons if nothing else. Maybe in the long term, they might find a better solution for containing her but for now, well, there it is.[4]

[orbitaldiamonds] The bomb vest was Rumlow's fault. Not Steve's, not Wanda's. Violence is the perpetrator's fault.[5]

This is a very interesting story that gets a bit dark at times.  It is, however, very well written and enjoyable to read.[6]
