Help talk:Starting a new page
The description of how to create a page "Using Wikilinks" misses two steps. 1. It should be checked whether the page already exists (maybe with or without article, different capitalization, different disambiguation, etc.) by searching for it. If it exists, "Go" will bring you directly to the page. If it doesn't exist, it will suggest pages with a similar name, one of them might be the page you are looking for. If it doesn't exist, you can use the red link to create the page. 2. Before using a red link on some page to create the new page, make sure that it's spelled/disambiguated correctly. --Doro 16:06, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
None of these steps work; update needed?
I have attempted all three of these methods to create a new page, but cannot find a link to create the page. I receive this message instead: "There is currently no text in this page. You can search for this page title in other pages, or search the related logs." Are there other requirements? I've searched through Help and the FAQs and cannot find any information about any other necessary steps. Can this page please be updated to include these steps or requirements? - This is how I start a page:
- I find a template from here that fits: http://fanlore.org/wiki/Category:Infoboxes, and I copy that text.
- I type in the name of the page I would like to create and click "go."
- In the blank page that opens up, I paste the text of the template I have chosen.
- I add some basic info to the template, like title and such, and then "save page," a button at the bottom.
- Then I look at "Recent changes" (in the toolbar at the side) for the page I just made, and populate my new page with info.
- Is this helpful to you for starting a page?
- On another topic: the "Starting a new page" instructions could perhaps be made clearer, or simplified. Hopefully, someone will take a stab at it. --MPH (talk) 12:54, 1 September 2015 (UTC)
The "First, a Template" section
1) would people mind if I turned the list of infobox templates at the start of the section into a bullet-point list as well? I think it would be more readable.
2) a bit further down we have:
More of these are being added all the time! If you would like a page outline for a particular page type, feel free to request it on the Talk page. To date, the page outlines we have available include:
And I'm just like "aren't ship and pairing the same thing?? Why do we have both?" Clicking through, they're both good page skeletons for building pages that use Template:PairingProfile, but I think just listing them both with no explanation is confusing... hmm I think the "Relationships" one has more detailed "starter paragraphs" (or idk a better word for it), maybe we could list them together and point out the difference there? What do people think of this:

- (Reply to myself but) also if people want to discuss the differences between the two page templates or how to improve them, Aethel raised some great points over here. -- Quaelegit (talk) 04:04, 13 February 2024 (UTC)
