The Golden Toad Awards, or the Golden Toads, were Harry Potter fanfiction awards run by Flourish and Firebolt.
History
There was a session of the Golden Toad Awards in Spring 2000, and there may have been a round the previous year.[1][2] The Fall 2000 round of the awards ran from October 2000 through January 2001.
Flourish and Firebolt announced in early 2001 that there would not be a Spring/Summer 2001 Golden Toads session as was originally planned, but that there were plans for a Fall 2001 session (to run c. September 2001 – January 2002).[3]
In early 2001, the Golden Toads website moved to an "Amphibawards" site, where there were plans for them to be joined by a "sister awards" called The Silver Frogs.[4] Both sites were hosted by GeoCities and are now offline.
Fall 2000 Timeline
From the Golden Toads website during Fall 2000:
In the first stage, people vote for which fanfictions and authors should be nominated. In the second stage, we take all the nominees with three or more votes in their categories and give them each banners to put on their websites. We also post the nominees and ask people to vote for their favorite in each category. In the third stage, we count up the ballots and write an awards ceremony, honoring first place and runner-up.[5]
- Nominations opened in October 2000
- Voting for nominees ended circa the first week of November 2000
- Voting started in December 2000
- Winners of the Fall 2000 session were to receive their awards in June[6][3]
How to Vote
Katie&Virgo described the voting process for Fall 2000 to the ParadigmOfUncertainty list as follows:
Golden Toads are, to quote USA Today, the Harry Potter fandom equivient of an Oscar. To nominate fics/characters/etc., go to the site at http://www.geocities.com/toadawards.When you get there, go to Catagories. (URL: http://www.geocities.com/toadawards/catdef.html) There you will see a list of catagories and their definitions.
