Vilya is a slash Lord of the Rings anthology.

Issue 1

cover of issue #1, by Willow-wode (aka Jenni)

Vilya 1 was published in May 2003 and is 216 pages long.

The cover art and interior illustrations are by Willow-wode. The Celtic medallion is by Jean Kluge, and the illo, "Friends of Old," is by M. Margaret O'Shea.

It was the winner of Huggy Awards 2003, Best SF/Fantasy Anthology Zine, and Best Story, "Pipe Dreams."

From the editorial:

Well, it’s been an adventure. VILYA has been a year and a half in the making, most of that time spent gathering stories. This is SpiderWeb’s first offering, and a definite labor of love: love of writing, love of Peter Jackson’s brilliant movies, and most of all, love of the Professor’s Great Work.

My thanks first to J.R.R. Tolkien, without whose genius none of the stories or art in VILYA would exist. I first read LOTR at 16, and, as the cliche goes, it changed my life.

Issue 2

Vilya 2 was published in May 2004 and contains 300 pages.

cover of issue #2, by Willow-wode, "Hobbit-pile"

The cover art is by Willow-wode. The interior illustrations are by Graewolf, Jane Mailander, Karadin, Larrkin, the Theban Band, and Willow-wode.

Winner of 2005 Sizzler Awards, LOTR: Best Zine, Best Artist--Larrkin, Best Short Story--"Nightshirts" by Indil Salquende and "Pressure" by Legion, Best Story--"Symbiosis" by Willow-wode.

Winner of Huggy Awards 2005, Best SF/Fantasy Anthology Zine and Best Story, "Symbiosis" by Willow-wode

From the editorial:

Here we are again. VILYA II. This is SpiderWeb’s third offering, and you’d think I’d have this down by now, but no, I still need help, especially in gathering stories and art. Fortunately for me, fandom is a wonderful place full of generous people.

My thanks first to J.R.R. Tolkien and to Peter Jackson -long may he reign - whose Great Works inspired the stories and art in VILYA II. Without them, these pages would be blank, and what fun would that be?

Special thanks to Larrkin and Willow-wode for glorious artwork done with great kindness at the very last minute because the publisher is a terrible procrastinator.

And finally, infinite thanks to the authors and artists who contributed to VILYA II; Legion, Vangiekitty, Willow-wode, Karadin, Rakshi, Larrkin, Graewolf, and the Theban Band. Astar shines upon the hour of our meeting. Or rather, emailing, but there’s no Elvish for that.

  • Beginning by Legion (1)
  • Nightshirts by Indil Salquende (9)
  • Chosen Path by Legion (19)
  • Master of My Heart by Vangiekitty (31)
  • Timeless Moment by Legion (73)
  • Memory by Legion (79)
  • Symbiosis by Willow-wode (89)
  • Pressure by Legion (177)
  • One Night Shared by Legion (183)
  • Idyll by Karadin (201)
  • Time Taken by Legion (215)
  • Char ar' l'ear by Rakshi (251)
  • To the Distant Shore by Rakshi (265)

Issue 3

Vilya 3 was published in May 2006 and contains 200 pages.

cover of issue #3, by Willow-wode: "Blue Boys"

The cover art is by Willow-wode. The interior illos are by Lisa Adolf, Graewolf, Larrkin, and Willow-wode.

From the editorial:

VILYA III is SpiderWeb’s fifth offering. It’s a bit short this time, but the stories and art are as good as I’ve ever published.

My thanks first to J.R.R. Tolkien and to Peter Jackson, whose Great Works inspired the stories and art in VILYA III. The Professor has been my inspiration for more years than I care to put into print.

Special thanks to Lisa Adolf -the fastest artist in the Western Hemisphere -and, as always, to the multi-talented Willow-wode, for glorious artwork done with consummate skill at the last minute. Thanks also to Larrkin and Morgan Graewolf Reinhold, for allowing me to use their gorgeous pieces, to Jane Mailander, who sent me nearly a dozen hilarious cartoons three years ago, none of which appear in VILYA 111 because I misplaced themj and to Lorraine Brevig, who recommended Lisa.

And finally, infinite thanks to the excellent and admirable authors who contributed to VILYA III: Daffodil Bolger, Indil Salquende, Jane Mailander, Legion, WoodElf, and, as always, Willow-wode. I don’t know half of you half as well as I’d like, but I like all of you very well indeed.

  • Time That We Cherish by Legion (3)
  • Gift of the Roper by Jane Mailander (27)
  • Tangle by Willow-wode (55)
  • One Ending by Legion (67)
  • Overture by Daffodil Bolger (91)
  • Just Sleeping by Jane Mailander (131)
  • From the Home Office in Bag End West by Jane Mailander (137)
  • With a Little Help by WoodElf (141)
  • The Ring and the Road and the War by Indil Salquende (151)
