Fannish Journey

In 1987 while I was in my last year of college at the University of Louisville as a returning adult, a show came on that literally changed my life. I didn't finish college, but instead went back to my art and got more heavily into story writing than I had been. I began creating paintings based on what I saw on the show, especially of Vincent as there weren't that many pictures of him then in early 1988. I also got my first VCR and started taping the show as well as audio taping it too. I emersed [sic] myself in that world and discovered I wasn't the only one with this obession [sic] . I discovered SF conventions and fandom where I was welcomed with open arms with my art and "beasting". My first con was Rivercon in Louisville, KY in July 1988.

For a while I teamed up with 2 other SF artists, Bill Levy and Kurt Cagle, and we did the con curcuit [sic] for a living selling our artwork and merchandise created for fans. My traveling companions were also gamers and cartoonists. I wasn't a gamer, but I was intreged [sic] by the story aspects of gaming and on a long car trip back from a con in 1988 I began ploting [sic] and sketching out my first comic book-- which had been a life long dream of mine to do a comic book. So was born Macky's Sign of the Lion. Looking at it now--it was really bad. It got better as I got more visual material to work with, but still it was pretty bad and screamed amature [sic] . However, it was the first B&B comic book, coming out in October of 1988. Wendy Pini did hers later as did Innovations. They also had money and staff which I didn't. Mine was done on illustration board, in pencils and ink--or whatever would work, then run off at the neighborhood Kinko's.

On New Year's Eve 1988 after seeing the second season episode "God Bless the Child", I began writing my first novel, Adjustments For A New Year...

[...]

During my period in fandom I have wrtten [sic] and illustrated four first and second season V&C zines, four third and fourth season V&D zines, an orginial [sic] future/past novel that isn't and is set within the B&B universe-- Atanzi. Then there is a Forever Knight novel, FK short stories, included a triple crossover one between FK, Quantum Leap and Highlander. There are a few new FK ones on the Night Visions site as well unfinished ones too.. I have also done a "Beastcake" calendar. Lost track of how many paintings I did and sold of both B&B and other SF fandoms. Co-edited and contributed FK stories to Nightbeat, and contributed illustrations to a number of B&B zines. I still have an unpublished Northern Exposure zine I may get around to doing something with. Then there are the handmade, sculpted dolls I did of Vincent, Father and Catherine. I also did Pennywise, Freddy Kruger, and characters from the Mercedes Lackey books, jewlery [sic], stuffed toys, and lots of media related cross stitch patterns.

I am no longer publishing my zines as designing Cross Stitch for PhoeniX Stitchery keeps me to busy to do both but I still believe in the visions of the world that was created on the CBS Television series Beauty and the Beast.

These are my stories for good or bad.. My visions and story directions may not always agree with the usual ones in fandom. I never was a Catherine fan. I was always in love with Vincent. I was always in love with the tunnel community and the idea of a safe place far from the madness of the world. I really wasn't wild about Catherine's violent end, but I soon became a die hard third season fan of Diana and my more recent stories reflect that. Also I want Vincent to go on with his life as I had to after the death of my third husband, Kenlen, June 12, 1988. I had to for the sake of our kids, and that's what I believe Vincent will have to do evenually [sic] and I see Diana as helping him to find his full potential as man and find peace within himself once again.
