Hijikata Toshizou is a major antagonist from the manga Golden Kamuy. He is a fictional interpretation of the real life Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi Toshizou Hijikata. While the real-life Hijikata died in 1869 during battle, Hijikata from Golden Kamuy was instead captured by the Meiji government and imprisoned in Abashiri Prison for his crimes. While there, he took advantage of the gold hunt spearheaded by Wilk to become a tattooed prisoner and allowed them all to escape.
He led what some fans call the Hijisquad, a group of characters who work for Hijikata, to re-establish the Republic of Ezo, but was ultimately unsuccessful and was killed by Koito Otonoshin in the manga's final arc.
