Toshizou Hijikata is a major antagonist from Golden Kamuy. He is a fictional interpretation of the real life Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi Toshizou Hijikata. While the real-life Hijikata died in 1869 during battle, Hijikata from Golden Kamuy was instead captured by the Meiji government and forced to be imprisoned at Abashiri Prison for his crimes. While there, he took advantage of the gold hunt spearheaded by Wilk to become a tattooed prisoner and allowed them all to escape. He led what some fans call the Hijisquad to re-establish the Republic of Ezo, but was ultimately unsuccessful and was killed by Otonoshin Koito in the manga's final arc.

Relationships

Hijikata is rarely shipped with the other characters. This is for several reasons: his advanced age (around 73) and his origins as a real-life person. But ships involving him do exist.

The most common pairing, (coupling in Japanese-speaking GK fandom,) is with Hyakunosuke Ogata, forming Hijikata x Ogata. Ogata was formerly in his squad, though went on to eventually betray him.

His second-most common ship is with Shirosuke Inudou, forming Hijikata x Inudou. Inudou's obsession over Hijikata is the driving force of Inudou's character, and their enemyslash potential is huge.
