I'm trying to find all of the substantive responses, but it's difficult because of how tumblr won't load that many notes at once. Here's the spreadsheet. Franzeska (talk) 22:48, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

I hear you there!!! I added what's on the page right now and only went down 65 "pages." Every time I found a substantial one, I had to click into it to copy and paste and get info, then (as you well know) got shunted up to the top of the post again, only to have to push "more notes" 65 more times to get back where I started. Multiply that by the, what, 30 comments there, and hello, that's like what had to be over 1000 clicks, probably a lot more. What we do for fandom! --MPH (talk) 23:15, 31 October 2015 (UTC)
O_O!!!!!! You deserve all the hugs! All of them!!!! --Doro (talk) 11:17, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
I'm going to try to organize the page once I finish my current project, which is compiling all of the URLs of responses in that google doc so that I don't lose them when the page decides that I've clicked on 'show more' too often. I'm up to about 22k out of 68k. But I just had to come add the American Pie filk. Franzeska (talk) 21:29, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

All right, I have a list of page URLs for all of the older comments up to about 68k worth. (Generated through a semi-successful use of this script.) I am now mapping the ones with actual comments (though plenty have interesting tag commentary). As far as I can see, the tag commentary mostly echoes the text commentary in about the same proportions. I am going to start organizing this page into themes so that it's more readable and interesting. Franzeska (talk) 00:45, 15 November 2015 (UTC)

Let me know when you are done adding quotes and links - I can then run them through John's citation tool.--MeeDee (talk) 15:07, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Wikilinks

I'm going to go in and link some things up. P.S. This page is really super, Franzeska. Excellent headings and organization. --MPH (talk) 13:24, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! I'm just trying to grab representative stuff as I read through, but there's just so much! I had to start with headings that were my impressions of the trends. They may increase as I notice repetitions I've missed. One thing I think would be cool would be to eventually add posting dates to our references. They should be visible at the posts in question if you have the right tumblr addons. I'm planning to help with formatting stuff like that eventually, but I'm not even a third of the way through content stuff. Franzeska (talk) 20:36, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

The Great Schism

When fans say "the Great Schism," are they referring to the same thing? I've not heard the term so consistently before. Is it a new phrase? A Tumblr one? --MPH (talk) 14:03, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

They're quoting one of the response posts, but I guess I should make that explicit. I've never seen anyone use it before this post, but people really latched onto the phrasing, so I used it as a section title because the concept seems to speak to us. It's from "Then there was the Great Schism, as fandoms spread far and wide across the Web, and basic HTML was the whole of the law." Franzeska (talk) 02:37, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

LOVE "Still pretty. Still ficcing."

Just right in all its sparkliness... --MPH (talk) 15:56, 21 November 2015 (UTC)

D There are some hilarious gifs in these responses. Mostly, I haven't included them, but that one was too good to pass up. What I'm doing now is trying to just get through all of the contentful replies up to the first 68k of notes and pick out ones that explicitly talk about dates, which fannish things came before which, or describe details like physical processes for making zines or the bad font choices on Geocities. Finally done going through reblogs

I have been through all of the reblogs up till now. I am now making myself a chart of the reblog patterns to look for any influential posts I missed, but I'm basically done adding references. Now it's time to maybe cull some repetitive ones, add more explanatory text, reorganize sections, etc. Franzeska (talk) 04:12, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Yay, thanks for fixing my formatting, guys! Figuring out what to do with tags vs. post text is also tricky. Some of the tags are full of interesting commentary. Franzeska (talk) 18:21, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

Editing request

Could someone please fix the misspelled Angelfire links ("AngelFire" and "Angel Fire")? Thank you. JKFAN (talk) 03:22, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

I don't see any in the article...? Franzeska (talk) 05:16, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
Oh, finally spotted them! Do you think a redirect would be better? Franzeska (talk) 05:20, 5 April 2019 (UTC)
I think redirects are already made? --MPH (talk) 19:10, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

Page Title

Why is this page title "The three generations of fanfic," which doesn't appear anywhere in the original post, and not just "livejournal, fanfiction.net and ao3 which one were you?" General convention is that pages for untitled meta are titled after the first line of the post. – caes (talk) 01:44, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

I'm adding a screenshot to the page of the post. Is "the three generations of fanfic" the title of the Tumblr or part of the individual post? I assumed it was the title of the post itself. MPH (talk) 13:31, 5 September 2019 (UTC)
MPH is correct - per the archived version of this post, "The three generations of fanfic" is clearly the title of the post. I'm not sure what your issue is, caes? –-enchantedsleeper (talk) 02:15, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Internal Links

I created some redirects for links on this page, and I have two queries.

  • Does fanfiction dot com refer to ff.net or did a ff.com site appear in 1998 too?? Would redirectly to ff.net be appropriate here?
  • I think madmaudlin's post about zines, mailing lists, etc refers to Madmaudlingoes reblog of this Tumblr post. It's currently reference 16 on this page, and the first quote in the "Our" History from Zines On section. If I'm right, I don't think an internal link is needed. But I'm not sure if I'm right. --Auntags (talk) 19:14, 6 September 2019 (UTC)
