Timecon was a multifandom convention held in San Jose, California between 1984 and 1992.
Proclamation by the Mayor of San Jose
All of these cons were given an official proclamation by the mayor of San Jose, California for being part of "Science Fiction Week."

The End of the Road
It seems the name 'TimeCon' was a dba of Steve Mann, former Chairman and guiding light. Steve, appearently, wanted mucho dinero (rumours go as high as $10,000 for 5 years) for use of the name. The current team wisely decided not to accept his offer. Unfortunately, they didn't choose a 'better' name, IMHO. As an amusing sidelight, when David Medinnus was doing a name search for his new store (A WRINKLE IN TIME in Cupertino) he did a check on all the local con names and the 'Timecon' dba had lapsed. David, being no fool, filed a dba under HIS name. He called Craig Nicholai, President of Conventions of Time, Inc, the corporate body, and offered them the use for a dollar. Unfortunately, Con-Fused had already sent out lots of ad material and con listings under their current name so they didn't want to change it at this late date.
Rule 6
In 1991, the con hotel required attendees to sign a contract of sixteen rules in reaction to what the hotel felt to be inappropriate behavior by guests the previous year.
Some of the rules were standard, but harshly-phrased, such as #14: "Safety violations: Jumping or hopping from room balconies or any other serious safety violation will result in removal from hotel property and possible room eviction with NO REFUND.".
Other rules were perceived as ridiculous attempts to force business-standard morals & behavior on a fan crowd.
Many con attendees widely mocked the sixth item on the list: "No physical contact other then holding hands, a quick hug or kiss will be tolerated. Any further actions will result in the subjects being asked to leave the property for the remaining time of the Con."
This one became known as Rule 6.

Welcome to another crazy and fun-tilled weekend with TIMECON. What you enjoyed last year was the chaos, the drama and the burning desire to experience all the excitement of TIMECON '84. This year we're better organized (somewhat), know what we're doing (if we ever did) and are bringing you the largest collection of Doctor Who guests the West Coast has ever seen.Don't expect to get any sleep! You can look forward to sore feet from standing in autograph lines and wandering through the dealer's room, but expect to have the time of your life. Timecon '85 has been set up for you to experience the best of Doctor Who, science fiction, and fantasy that we could bring you.
Any ghost-like figures you may see wandering around the convention who look wild-eyed and a little frazzled around the edges - these are the convention staff who put their heart and soul and a little blood (not to mention sweat and many sleepless nights [Ed. 4:00 AMI) into bringing you everything you see and experience. Take pity on them and give them a friendly smile.
Go out and have a good time, it's your convention.
GOPHER THIS, GOFER THAT, I WISH I WERE A RABBIT: Do you lie awake nights worrying what goes on behind doors marked OFF LIMITS? Are your dreams turning into nightmares because you don't know what type of people are running your convention? Well sleep easy. You too can learn the truth, become a volunteer. We still have a few positions available. You will be able to peek behind those closed doors and will come to realize that people on the Timecon staff are normal (well, almost). Besides people who work at least minimum number of shifts get fed and are eligible to attend our World Famous Star-Studded Wrap Party. Just inquire at Gofer Central.

Scientific: There will be presentations by: Richard Bennett on "Twenty-five Years in Space" dealing with developments in rocket science, Tim Kyger and William Dale "Goals of the Space Program: The Next 40 Years" covering the projected goals of the United States and members of the free world, Tom Fisher "Spacestation: Springboard to the Stars", Douglas F. Frost "Time Travel Begins With Space Colonies", Dr. Chris Mckay "The Case for Mars" dealing with establishing a Mars settlement, and Dr. Cary Sneider "Fantastic Voyage Through Space and Matter With Buckaroo Bonzai" a voyage with the technical advisor.
Strange & Wonderful: These discussions will open up new worlds, dealing in "Journeys into the Celtic World", "Tarot, Windows of the Subconscious" and "Ritual Magick; Its Power and Purpose". Stephen Abbott will charm convention-goers with these presentations. Sara Bruce and Linda Fischer will present "Thrift Store Costuming" sharing their knowledge on this subject. Dan Coffey "Ask Dr. Science will answer all the questions which have been puzzling you for years. "Building Science Fiction Hardware for TV, The Movies, and for Grins; or Across the 8th Dimension" exploring how to build props and miniatures of the sort used in movies and in TV.
Artists: Artistic technique relating to science fiction will be discussed in several panels: "The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of" an artists interpretation of science fiction, "Airbrush and Illustration " reflecting art in science fiction and fantasy, "The Spirit of the Ster" introducing designs for rockets and remote control space ships. Robert Anthony, a special effects maker will share latex models with fans.
Special Features for Children: Fantasy originated as children's entertainment. The "adults" on the staff of Timecon 85 are proud to announce that FANTASY will be, temporarily, handed back to the children during Timecon's childrens presentations: Maggie Gardner presents; "Enter Your Own Fantasy", a childrens improvisational workshop culminating in an actual performance. "Travelers in Time, Space and Other Dimensions", readings and recitations from childrens literature involving time and interdimensional travel by Star Love joy West.
Strange and Wonderful: San Jose best hide its head as Timecon 85 journeys to lands unknown and thrift stores. You'll probably need your Hitchhiker's Guide to find your way around: 'Journeys Into the Celtic World" by Stephen Abbott. "Tarot, Windows of the Subconscious" by Stephen Abbott. "Ritual Magick: Its Power and Purpose" by Stephen Abbott. "Building Science Fiction Hardware for TV, the Movies, and for Grins: or Across the 8th Dimension", an exploration into props and miniatures which promises to be as odd as its title by Starcraft: Bear Burge, Sarah Bruce, Matthew Clayson, Kevin Karvonen and Robert Mannion. "Thrift Store Costuming" by Sara Bruce and Linda Fischer.
Entertainment Extraordinaire: Timecon 85 is proud to present, for your entertainment pleasure, "Ask Dr. Science" by Dr. Science (aka Dan Coffey). Japanese Animation: Back by popular demand! C/FO - Hayward Chapter (Cartoon/Fantasy Organization) will be presenting three-days of Japanese Animation and fantasy adventure cartoons such as the "Cobra" series and "Lupin III". These features, as well as many others, will be presented in room 201A in the Sainte Claire Hilton hotel.
Mega Video: When it comes to movies and videos, we have a great selection! For Whovians, there is a giant 20-foot video screen where you'll see a variety of Doctor Who episodes. All of the transition episodes between Doctors (except "The War Games") will be shown. In addition, you will see a few Colin Baker stories not yet released in the U.S.
In the film room we will be showing an assortment of features including many classics. For the hardcore sci-fi/fantasy/video fans, the 24 hour video room (affectionately named the "Red Eye Video Show") will be showing obscure and cult classics as well as selected short subjects (maybe "Bambi meets Godzilla"?). Located in the Sainte Claire Hilton, the video room will be open to all convention guests from 9:00 AM on Friday to 10:00 PM Sunday evening.
Fantasy Games: There will be 24-hour gaming in the lower level (Dungeon) of the Sainte Claire Hilton. There will also be an Advanced Tournament. The open gaming will have many varieties of fantasy role playing games. There will be a sign-up board in the main gaming room, so that players and Game Masters may pre-arrange their games. We expect to have such games as the famous dungeon game that started it all. The Doctor Who Role-Playing Game, and others.
The Tournament will be run on Saturday at 1 pm, with the finalists competing on Sunday. There will be a $3 entrance fee to cover the cost of the prizes. Players must pre-register by 11:30 on Saturday. All Tournament players will receive a badge for competing, and the top three players will receive a miniature sword to certify that they accomplished this noble feat. The top players will be judged on their skills at role-playing, co-operation, puzzle-solving, creativity, and accomplishing the mission. We will 1^ using Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (fM) rules for the tournament, with minor modifications.

Filking: Okay, you've heard of folksinging, you say, but what's FILKsinging? Filksinging is the official music of s.f. cons. Imagine a collaboration between Pete Seeger and Weird Al Yankovic with Isaac Asimov as their inspiration. Songs about robots, spaceships. Doctor Who, Dark Shadows, all set to familiar tunes, or to someone's original composition. All you need is a strong pair of lungs and a lot of enthusiasm.
Filksinging will be going on in the Sainte Claire Hilton, on the second floor in room 206, starting at about 9 p.m. each night.

Costume Call is 7:00 PM Saturday evening. Please be there on time as we will be using this time to take photos of your costume for the judges. During the masquerade contestants will be sharing the Exhibit Hall with the audience while awaiting their cues. Please be courteous of those around you and keep talking to a minimum.
Our professional, experienced (and tame) panel of judges will be announced at the beginning of the Masquerade.

Prisoner Release Invitation: You are cordially invited to attend the Prisoner Release activities happening this weekend at the Village (TIMECON '85). Rumor has it that questions about Number 6 and the Village will be answered. Friday evening, Number 54 (Scott Apel) will give a general presentation on the Prisoner series. Saturday morning, a panel of Prisoner fans will hold a discussion and give their views about the symbols, characters, and the changing role of the Prisoner in the Village. The Prisoner Release Party will be held Saturday evening. Come dressed as your favorite number and have a great time under the Green Dome.

Timecon '85 Cabaret: Welcome to the all new TIMECON '85 Cabaret! This cabaret is an event not to be missed. We've assembled an outstanding cast including Colin Baker, Nicholas Courtney, John Nathan- Turner, and many other guests. You'll have the opportunity to see your favorite guest do things you never expected.
Tickets may be purchased at the TIMECON information table in the Dealers' Room lobby for $15 each. The seating is unreserved so don't come late. Sorry, but tickets for the buffet dinner had to be purchased in advance. On Friday, the buffet dinner will be served at 6:30 PM followed by the Cabaret at 8:00 PM. On Sunday, the buffet dinner is 5:30 PM, followed by the Cabaret at 7:00 PM.
[For the Dark Shadows fans]: Come hear some of Jonathan's thoughts on his work as Barnabas. This video-live presentation entitled: "The Best of Barnabas and Some of the Worst" promises to be one of the highlights of the Dark Shadows Festival.Not to be missed is the special live presentation "The Evil That Men Do" by Jonathan Frid. Jonathan has added to and continues to add to this fascinating look into some of the aspects of evil which were brought to life in Barnabas. In addition, there will be a raffle for brunch with Jonathan. Raffle tickets will be on sale from Friday at 1:00 until Sunday morning. The raffle will take place at 10:00 AM Sunday in the Spartan Ballroom. The winners must be present. Two lucky people will be able to spend time with Jonathan in the relaxed surroundings of a Sunday brunch.
A special treat to look forward to will the Victorian and Regency dancing that will take place in the Spartan Ballroom on Saturday at 6:00 PM. (Come capture the spirit of the 18th and 19th centuries. Teachers will be provided for the first time dancers. Costumes can add to the spirit.
For the fans who have missed Dark Shadow episodes will be presented in the Spartan Ballroom. Not to be missed will be the airing of House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows.

Welcome to this year's C/FO (Cartoon Fantasy Organization) Japanimation Room at Timecon '86. This year, we have for your viewing pleasure animation features and episodes. There are old favorites that early Japanimation fans will remember and enjoy, and the highly popular recent animation such as Dirty Pair, Orguss, Final Yamato, Lupin III, and Nausicaa. The latest and most exciting action packed animation out of Japan will be here, including: Arion (same creator who did Cmsher Joe), Vampire Hunter D, Odin, Tobikage, Magazone 23 Part II, The God Marz Movie and many more.

Strange occurrences to be announced. Among the special guests invited to perform at the Feast is the professional comedy troupe, San Jose Improv, under die direction of KARA radio personality Dan Schow.
You might remember them from volunteering on pledge nights at KTEH (54) or any of their engagements over the past three years in the San Jose area. Seats are limited, advanced registrants will be seated first. Any seats left unreserved shall be sold on a first come, first serve basis. There is a $2 cover charge for refreshments.

The pleasure of your company is requested at the English Regency Dance on Friday night at ten pm. Regency Dancing is dancing in the manner of the British aristocracy be tween 1790 and 1820, a time when the cut of a man's coat was more important than his personal wealth; when his grace on the dance floor mattered more than his courage on the battlefield. It was the time of Beau Brummel and of Napoleon.
These dances, which will be taught by Alan Winston of the Bay Area English Regency Society, are easy to learn and fun to do. They ares mostly graceful line and set dances,- of the same vintage as the Virginia Reel; there are a few beautiful waltzes as well. Why Regency dancing at a science fiction convention? Because most of the people who started the Regency revival, in the early seventies, were science-fiction fans. Since then. Regency dance has been taught at Worldcon, Westercon, Loscon, Baycon, and many other conventions; the fans who try it invariably enjoy it. You don't need to know anything about the Regency, or anything about dancing. Regency dancing is the first dancing many fans have done; they pick it up quickly. You needn't wear a Regency costume; your street clothes or hall cos tum will do splendidly. You shouldn't play a particular Regency character, although we hope that you'll practice Regency etiquette.
Finally, you don't need a partner. Bring yourself and your enthusiasm, and we shall certainly have a splendid time.

The "exquisite corpse" (call it a game, call it an artistic technique) was invented by the surrealists Andre Breton and Yves Tanguy as a way of creating art that could not possibly come from one conscious mind. The collaborators in an exquisite corpse take turns adding to the piece (a poem, sketch, perhaps a script) being created. Until it is completed, none are permitted to see more than the tail end of the previous contribution. (The term "exquisite corpse" comes from a famous sentence created with the technique: "The exquisite corpse will drink new wind.") The audience at tonight's event is invited to take part, in this manner, in the writing of three short pieces.

"In the Days of King Arthur: A Fantasy Theater Performance" by Star Lovejoy West
Modem-day Storyteller/Actress, Star Lovejoy West, will perform "In the Days of King Arthur", an original fantasy theater piece based upon ancient Celtic myth and legend.
In this story, the Master Court Bard has died, and the King holds a storytelling competition to fill the vacancy. Star embodies each contesting Bard, in a superb one-women performance, including the pompous court favorite, the silly jester, and the mysterious stranger. Individually, each character unfolds his wondrous, magical, adventurous, tragic, or farcical tale. Star is a masterful storyteller whose dynamic style transforms folk tradition into high art. Her performances echo the achievements of the medieval Celtic Bards of Britain and Ireland.

Filk Room: Where can you hear tunes such as "What Do You Do With A Drunken Vulcan?" and "Beware The Sentient Chili"? If you are strong of heart and voice, follow your ears to the lively strains of familiar tunes (with surprising differences). One of the best activities for the wee hours of the con! Beginners never fear; tunes are usually familiar, the lyrics easy, or you can sit back and enjoy an original song or a re quest (in the time honored "pick, pass, or play"). The ability to carry a tune is not required.
Since we wouldn't want you wandering around with nary a thing to do, we have thoughtfully provided a number of late night and 24 HR activities at the Holiday Inn to whet your interest after the greater part of the con shuts down for the night. (Who sleeps anyway?)
HOTEL PARTIES: For your amazement and enjoyment we have set aside the second floor of the Holiday Inn just for open room parties. Come see the wildlife in their natural habitat. Thus far, the scheduled parties include those by The Myth Adventures Fan Club (yep, they're throwing TWO of them!)
24 HOUR VIDEO ROOM: You loved 'em last year so we came up with the sequel: The Return of The 24 HR Video Room. It's the perfect place to meet other die-hard film fans, and what better way is there wind down than by watching those classic science fiction/fantasy horror films.
GAMING: A Gaming extravaganza! What better way to safely indulge in multiple personalities? So far there is one tournament game for modified AD&D at any level of experience. We would love to hear from you if you're interested in running a tournament or if you have any suggestions. We'll also have some loud, absolutely intense video arcade games available. (The Holiday Inn also has their own selection of arcade games right off the hotel
lobby.)
WEAPONS POLICY: For your safety and for the safety of others, the following weapons policy will be in effect at Timecon '87.
1) No real firearms allowed. If it looks real leave it at home.
2) No "Laser Tag" guns. For safety and insurance reasons we can not allow "laser tag" type guns at Timecon.
3) We realize that many of the costumes require swords and knives, however, we must insist that they be peace bonded. If you have a weapon you need to have peace bonded, come to the security office, which will be on the second floor of the Holiday Inn. To avoid accidental stabbings, etc., all swords must be in scabbards so that the bare blade is not exposed.
4) We are not the Cantina at Mos Eisley, so keep your weapons bolstered. You don't want the mild mannered Security staff to turn into Berserkers do you?
5) If you have a crossbow or long or short bow with your costume, leave the bolts or arrows at home. At no time can the bows be armed with any type of projectile.
6) No sword fights, gun battles, duels, knife fights, martial arts demonstrations allowed. This is supposed to be a civilized convention. If you must be violent, do it elsewhere.
Violators will be placed into a transport unit set on "the widest possible disbursement." Either that or we'll scramble their D-Hopper markings.

Weapons In The Real World: Though the Timecon staff under stands the use of prop weapons in costuming, there will be a large amount of innocent, unfannish bystanders on the streets
and in the surrounding businesses who won't. For yom own safety we recommend that you do not draw or display a weapon while traveling between the Convention Center and your hotel, and we strongly discourage you from wearing masks and weapons while visiting any of the nearby stores or restaurants.

...there will be some noticeable changes, so keep your eyes open. One of the changes is our ni^t life! We have added a few items to these activities such as Hotel Royale. This fund raiser is a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of conventioneering and a chance to try your luck at our tables. We have set up workshops to familiarize you with the aspects of gaming, so if you are not up on the rules, drop in our workshop and learn. We will also be offering tips on maximizing your winning potential! Remember, this is a fund raiser, so if you win, congratulations, but even if you lose, the money goes to a good cause. In that light, everybody wins!
Also look for some changes in the Party Floor. We will be adding a couple of rooms for activities supported by some of the dealers. This year we will have a role playing gaming room and the mystic magick room. You may have already noted that we hav moved the Main Panel room down stairs. This move will reduce the congestion suffered when everyone was trying to get through three elevators traversing seven floors! There may still be a problem getting into the panel room, but we will be airing live the performances on one of our TV channels. If you don't have a room in the hotel, not a problem, there will be a large screen TV in the lobby. So you don't have to miss a thing!
Did I say one of the TV channels? Yes! We have two TV channels this year, one for your favorite movies, and the other for the live activities of the convention!
And still there is more! Timecon '89 has official theme music! Stephen Sea and Sim Itar have licensed Timecon to use their music for Timecon. Their music is a combination of Fusion Jazz and Rock as well as incidental themes found in some science fiction movies. Inertia Records also has a program such that every album of theirs bought at Timecon will provide a $ 1.00 donation to KTEH. On top of that, the cost of their albums will be at a special reduced rate available only at Timecon '89!
