The Amazing Spider-Man is Columbia Pictures' second film series adaptation of the Spider-Man comics by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The series stars Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy.
Canon
After canceling plans for a fourth Sam Raimi movie, Columbia Pictures rebooted the franchise with The Amazing Spider-Man, directed by Marc Webb in 2012. A sequel was released in 2014. A third and fourth movie were planned for 2016 and 2018, however after the announcement in February 2015 of a new Spider-Man film franchise with Marvel Studios, it was revealed that the sequels were cancelled although there are still plans for a Sinister Six, Venom and a untitled-female-led film.
Integration Into MCU
As of 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, the world of The Amazing Spider-Man canonically occurs in one of the many parallel universes of the MCU-established multiverse.
Main Characters
- Peter Parker/Spider-Man
- Gwen Stacy
- Aunt May Parker
- Uncle Ben Parker
- Dr. Curt Connors/Lizard
- Captain George Stacy
- Harry Osborn/Green Goblin
- Max Dillon/Electro
Other Spider-Man characters appeared in the series, including Flash Thompson, Norman Osborn, Aleksei Sytsevich/Rhino, Felicia Hardy (appeared as Harry's assistant), Richard and Mary Parker.
Fandom
This article or section needs expansion. |
The fandom is mainly located on Archive of Our Own and Tumblr, DeviantArt, Youtube and Fanfiction.net are fairly common places to find works for it. Although a few LiveJournal communities were created for the series, they have been dead since 2012.
Common Tropes & Fanon
Crossovers with the Marvel Cinematic Universe are quite popular, as many fans felt strongly that Spider-man should be included in the wider MCU, but at the time licensing and copyright issues made this impossible. Crossovers with other Marvel properties are quite common as well.
- Fanworks featuring this trope:
- This Is a Bad Town, For Such a Pretty Face by equalopportunityobsessor - SHIELD isn't in the habit of letting superheroes run amok. Peter isn't in the habit of broadcasting his secret identity to the world. (Luckily, Gwen Stacy and Pepper Potts aren't in the habit of letting their men be ridiculous.)
- All I've Got Left To Believe In, by torakowalski - Clint Barton is not Peter Parker's big brother (high school AU).
A version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe crossover trope is superfamily, in which members of the Avengers (particularly Steve/Tony) adopt Peter.
- Fanworks featuring this trope:
Pairing Peter off with a version of Mary Jane Watson is also popular. Holland Roden as a fancast for MJ is common. Sometimes fans will re-imagine MJ as a man, fancasting Michael B. Jordan in response to Andrew Garfield saying he'd like to have Peter explore his sexuality and Michael B. Jordan was his choice for playing MJ[1].
- Fanworks featuring this trope:
- What Makes You Real, by SHCombatalade - He’s already halfway up the stairs but MJ’s response has him drawing up short, doubling back with disbelief because there is no way, no way, that ‘cover for me’ means ‘He’s off to don his spandex and save the city’ like MJ says. “What the f-oucault pendulum,” he admonishes; it’s not what he wants to say, not even close, but Aunt May is standing there all of five-foot-two with an eyebrow raised warningly.
“Oh,” MJ snorts over a forkful of potatoes, “you really think she didn’t know?” And yeah, he really really did.
Pairings
The most popular pairing in the fandom is the canonical het pairing of Peter Parker/Gwen Stacy; however, there is significant crossover with other Marvel properties, so Steve Rogers/Tony Stark is tagged even more frequently, and the second-most popular pairing is Peter Parker/Wade Wilson. After the release of the second movie, there was a significant increase in Harry Osborn/Peter Parker. Peter Parker/Flash Thompson is fairly rare slash pairing.

- Maggie Fitzgerald and the Saltwater Drip by antistar_e Google politely tells her there are no poisonous spiders in Manhattan. Judging by her symptoms -- fever, superstrength, newfound desire to shove herself into small dark spaces, and sudden reputation as a masked vigilante -- Gwen would beg to differ. [Spider!Gwen AU.]
