Sokka is a main character in the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.

At the age of thirteen, Sokka was left the oldest male in the Southern Water Tribe when his father, the chief, led the other men to fight against the Fire Nation. Two years later, he and his younger sister, a waterbender named Katara, discover an Air Nomad frozen in an iceberg. Aang, the last airbender, is the most recent incarnation of the Avatar, who disappeared a century prior. As master of all four elements, it is Aang's duty to bring harmony to the world. Thus, Sokka and Katara accompany Aang on his world-spanning journey to master the four elements and end the war.

While he has no bending abilities, Sokka is an invaluable member of the team, using his skills as a strategist, innovator, and boomerang thrower to get his allies out of tight spots. He is also a frequent source of comic relief.

After Zuko and Katara, Sokka was the third most popular character among all ATLA works on AO3 as of 20 March 2019.[1]

Fan Speculation

Very little of Sokka's post-ATLA life was revealed in the sequel series, The Legend of Korra, leading many fans to generate theories and fanon ideas.

Because Suki is not mentioned in TLOK, some believe that she may have died young, possibly widowing Sokka or otherwise leaving him single and childless for the rest of his life.[2] Circa June 2020, the theory became so widespread that some believe Bryke have confirmed it as canon.[3][4][5][6][7] The rumor may have originated from, or at least circulated within, TikTok.[8]

Some theorize that Bataar Beifong Jr. is Sokka's grandson, due to an similarities in their appearances and interest in engineering. Some Tokka shippers headcanon Sokka as the father of Bataar Jr.'s mother, Toph's second daughter, Suyin Beifong. Others headcanon Sokka as Bataar Jr.'s paternal grandfather, on the basis of Bataar Sr. possessesing the same similarities with Sokka. Varrick is alternately or additionally headcanoned as Sokka's descendant due to their shared Southern Water Tribe heritage, aptitude for inventing, and wacky personalities.[2]

Between October 2013 and 14 June 2019, Sokka was most often listed as paired with Azula (28%) and Toph (28%), followed by Suki (17%) and Zuko (17%), Yue (4%), Ty Lee (2%) and Mai (2%), Aang (1%) and Katara (1%) through FanFiction.Net's pairing feature.[9]

Between 2019 and 20 August 2020, Sokka was most often listed as paired with Zuko (31%) and Azula (31%), followed by Toph (17%), Suki (13%), Yue (6%), and Jet (1%) on FanFiction.Net.[10] In the same period on AO3, he was most often paired with Zuko at twice the rate of his next most common love interest, Suki, followed by Yue, Toph, Azula, then Jet.[10] The surge in Zukka content is correlated with the 2020 "ATLA Renaissance".

Most of these are comparable in popularity to their gen versions.

Not a ship, but the sibling relationship between Sokka & Katara are also popular with fandom.
