The red thread of fate, also known as the red string of fate, is a romantic trope in both fanon and canon. It involves a metaphysical red cord that binds a person to their destined soulmate.
The red string originates in the Chinese myth of yīnyuán hóngxiàn (literally the "red line of marriage"). The original Chinese legend holds that the lunar match-matching god binds two people destined to be together at the ankles with an invisible red string. However, in Japanese and Korean culture, the string is thought to be tied from a man's thumb to a woman's little finger.[1][2]
The trope is common in anime, manga, and other Japanese fiction, where it's referred to as akai ito or unmei no akai ito. Due to the international popularity of Japanese media, in many western fanworks, mainly fanfiction, the red string is almost always wrapped around a person's little finger to direct them to their soulmate, only joining together when the soulmate is found.
