Noragami (ノラガミ, literally 'Stray God') is a fantasy manga and anime series written and illustrated by Adachitoka. It follows the story of Yato, an obscure god who struggles to make a name for himself and face his dark past, and his companions Hiyori Iki and Yukine. The series balances action and comedy with intense plotlines and character arcs.

The series had two seasons of anime, Noragami and Noragami Aragoto, each with a respective OVA. The manga is ongoing, published in Monthly Shonen Magazine in Japan. It is published in English and Japanese by Kodansha.

Both the first opening and second opening are very famous in the anime community. A popular joke is making a wish for a third season on a five yen coin (which Yato asks for as pay in the series).

Shipping

Angst and hurt/comfort art the most popular genres for Noragami fic. The series' most popular ships are:

  • Hiyori/Yato (Yatori): The most popular ship in the series. This ship is mildly controversial, as Hiyori is 15 and Yato is characterized as a young adult though he is a god that is hundreds of years old. Canon does not acknowledge any type of mature romance between the two beyond innocent jokes or crushes.
  • Yato/Yukine (Yatone): This is the most controversial ship, for similar reasons as Hiyori/Yato. Yukine is portrayed as 12-13, though he is a shinki and therefore deceased. A non-canon ship.
  • Bishamon/Kazuma (Kazubisha): Strongly implied in canon. Kazuma and Bishamon are both characterized as adults and have known each other for hundreds of years, making it very popular.
