Star-crossed lovers, sometimes shortened to star-crossed, is a romantic trope in both fanon and canon. It involves a pair of characters whose love is thwarted by outside forces, such as curses, conflict/feuds, or disaster. The phrase originates from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, often considered the definitive example of the trope, and refers to the concept of stars ruling people's fates.
