Positively Percy was a Harry Potter fansite for the character Percy Weasley. It was run by Cairnsy and featured canon information about Percy, fan analyses of his character, and fanworks.
Percy Weasley. Missunderstood, often passed over as 'that snobby, uptight Weasley', few take the time to look deeper into the soul of one of the most complex characters in the Harry Potter series. Positively Percy explores the depths of the fabulous Weasley's mind, as well as playing tribute to a character who has captured the hearts of many, anonymous fans.
History
The site was founded in or around 2000[1] and reached 5,000 hits in June 2001.[2] The site was redesigned in August 2001.[3]
In late 2002, another redesign was planned for the site, and the splash page of the site was changed to remove the link to the main content of the site and include instead an announcement of the design change and a statement that the site would be "back in a couple of days."[4] This notice was never removed, and though the site content pages themselves were not taken offline,[5] the site was rendered effectively unusable.[6]
The site went offline in October 2009 with the closure of GeoCities.
Content
- Updates
- Why Percy? — An essay explaining Cairnsy's reasons for creating a Percy fansite. She writes in part:
- "To me, Percy has always been a complex character, who has so much promise that lurks just under the surface. [...] Percy is incredibly missunderstood [sic], by both other characters in the book and fans alike. One of the reasons this shrine was set up, was to - if not convert people into fans of Percy, then at least make people think of Percy in a different light."
- Percy Bio (previously Percy Stats) — "Short facts" about Percy from canon, including information about his time at Hogwarts, his work for the Ministry of Magic, and his physical appearance.
- Percy Timeline — A timeline of the events of Percy's life through Goblet of Fire, with dates as stated in canon or inferred using canon information. The page notes that "a couple of these dates - such as year of birth, are based on analysis, but have the possibility of being a year out on either side of the date given." Although the timeline reasonably rules out August as being one of Percy's possible birth months (since Harry had been at the Burrow twice during August and Percy's birthday was never mentioned), in 2004 JKR announced on her official site that Percy was born on August 22.
- Character Analysis
- What's in a name? — This page discussed Percy's name and its etymology. It was referenced by the (unrelated) Harry Potter name etymology site What's In a Name?, which stated:
- "According to Positively Percy , 'Percival' was a name reserved only for the upper class of Britain in the days of the Monarchy. Later, the British commoners were allowed to use a version of this name (previously, they would have been punished). This variant was 'Percy'; Percival itsself still off-limits. By being named 'Percy', the name plays off our Percy's family roots as a 'poor commoner'. Additionally, Sir Percival was one of King Arthur's knights."[7]
- Percy Moments — A collection of quotes from the first two Harry Potter books of significant scenes featuring Percy. For example, the page includes a snippet of the scene in which Percy is first introduced on Platform 9 3/4, and Ginny's announcement at the end of Chamber of Secrets that he had been dating Penelope Clearwater. As of the page's last update, there was a note that quotes from the third and fourth books were "coming soon."
- Movie Percy
- Fan Works (Fan Fiction/Art) — The Fan Works page indicated that the site was to host Percy-centric fanfiction and fanart, though as of the last update the Fan Art section was stated to be "currently down." The Fan Fiction page hosted each of Cairnsy's Percy stories that were written through early 2002, though the page may have originally been intended to host user-submitted stories as well. Cairnsy did explicitly invite user submissions of Percy fanart on the Fan Works page, though it is unclear how many (or if any) were received.
- Ask Percy
- Essays/Rants — The essays section of the site was not archived by the Wayback Machine, and the contents of the section are unclear. It did presumably contain essays by Cairnsy; Cairnsy wrote on her LiveJournal in early 2002 of her plans to write "new essays" for the site, with the topics: "The similarities between Percy and Bill"; "Myths about Percy"; and "Wizard world has different moral standards to our world."[8]
- Message Board — Starting from 2001 or 2002, the site linked to a Positively Percy message board on ezboard. The board is no longer available, so its contents and level of activity are unknown.[9]
- Links — The page was described as "a small collection of some of my [Cairnsy's] favourite H.P links at the moment." It included links to Chris Rankin Online, FanFiction.Net, t h e * d o g * s t a r, Hagrid's Hut, Harry Potter Facts and Fun, Harry Potter Fanfic Challenge, and The Wonderful World of Harry Potter.
