First Fanfics?

In 2005 z_rayne commented in a Slash Philosophy post by partly_bouncy,

I was the third person to write Joxer/Ares back in early 1998 (under my old pseud of Dyevka). The first two were Miriam Heddy and, I believe, Black Rose. Not necessarily in that order. I know that Miriam's Joxer/Ares series (which began with "Lessons in Battle") was written in late 1997 or early 1998, as we roomed together at the very first ConneXions in March or April of 1998 and she'd already started the series by then.[1][2]

The earliest fanfics in the AO3 ship tag are backdated to 1998 and include a Highlander crossover by wickedwords, Days of Beer & Dandelions, and the Footfalls series by Zoe Rayne.

A fan in 1998 wrote the following about the original fics, sourcing the ship to Athea:

Then back in December of 1997 a challenge was issued on the Hercfic list -- a mailing list devoted to stories featuring the men of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys. The challenge was for a story that had to include Ares, mistletoe and one of the twelve days of Christmas. Athea answered the challenge with her short story " Blame it on the mistletoe", and a new genre was born.
