Internet Relay Chat (IRC) is a form of realtime internet chat that has existed since 1988. For fandom, it is significant because it was available at a time when more modern chat programs weren't; because it is usable by people with a wide variety of computers and internet connections; and because it serves as a distribution channel for fansubs and other fanworks.

An example of a fan-run IRC channel was #loiscla for the Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman fandom.
