About
This is a workshop intended to help Sentinel fanfic writers improve their specific works and their writing skills in general. The sencrit mailing list will be used to distribute drafts of stories to participants and to coordinate meeting times. The stories will be discussed in regular meetings done on IRC.
This list is ONLY for people who are interested in submitting works to be critiqued and in doing critiques of the works of others. There is a participation requirement; please see the list policy for details. This is NOT a reading list. Stories that are discussed will be posted however the author chooses, whether to sxf or in zines or on webpage, whatever. (You *don't* have to be a writer to participate -- in fact, people who just want to critique would be great. :-) [1]

List Policies
List philosophy The purpose of this list is simple: to help Sentinel fanfic writers improve. Please write your critiques with this in mind: your goal is to help the writer improve this piece and to improve her/his writing in general. Please read critiques with this in mind: the critiquers are trying to help you, and they're contributing a considerable amount of time and thought to do so.
Participation requirements You have to do at least one crit (either e-mail or IRC) per 5 stories posted. If something comes up and you won't be able to do crits for a while, just unsub from the list and rejoin when you've got time again. The purpose of this is to keep the list from turning into a "sneak peek" list -- if you aren't actively doing crits, you shouldn't be on the list.
Story guidelines
•Any kind of Sentinel story, barring actor/minor sex, is welcome.
•Any listmember can post a story that s/he has worked on to be critiqued. Stories written with a non-listmember collaborator are fine, as long as the collaborator gives permission.
•If you post an incomplete story, feel free to include outlines for the sections that aren't written yet if you have them, but they're not required.
•Please keep your story posts around 20K in size, which is about 400 lines of plain text. Making them larger than that may cause problems for listsibs at AOL and other ISPs.
•Please also make sure that your story has no special characters and is only plain text before posting. If you have a story that has special formatting or something similar, post a request for readers to the list rather than sending it as a file attachment.
•A basic spellcheck on stories is required before posting to save time for all participants.
•Please label your stories at the beginning as follows: : Title: :Type: (gen/slash) :Genre: (hc/rape/death/pwp/humor/parody/etc. (one word only)) :Rating: :Status: (complete/incomplete) :Proposed IRC discussion date: (optional)
So that critiquers can go through the story with as few preconceptions as possible, please put any notes/requests only at the end. These can include things like what areas you'd like critiquers to focus on and what areas you don't want them to bother with.

Doing critiques You can post a critique to the list, either free-form or using the critique template, whichever you prefer. The other option is to participate in a group critique on IRC. The author will post a time for this critique on the list; if you'd like to participate and that time doesn't work for you, contact her/him and ask for a change.
I know it's a little annoying to have to edit the subject line instead of just replying, but that will let me automate the critique tally. If you don't put "CRIT" in the subject line, it won't get tallied for your performance requirements. For IRC discussions, please have one person log and post the log to the list.
Staying on-topic The main point of this list is the critiquing. Discussion of specific critiques, specific stories, and of critiquing/writing in general is fine, but the discussions shouldn't outweigh the critiques. General Sentinel discussions belong on SENAD/Sentries, and general Sentinel fan fiction discussions belong on SENAD/Sentries/Senfic more than they do here.
No flaming No flaming critiques will be tolerated, and flaming people because of critiques (whether on- or off-list) also won't be tolerated. If you feel that a critique was a flame, e-mail the moderator privately and ask me to deal with it -- *DON'T* shoot a nasty e-mail to the critiquer. If someone does flame over a crit, even if the original crit *was* a flame, I'll unsub them.
This may seem unfair, but it's for one simple reason: the number one reason mentioned that people don't write critiques is because they are afraid of provoking a negative reaction or a flame. If we want honest and useful crits, we've got to make sure that this is an environment that doesn't intimidate critiquers from speaking their minds. On the other hand, if someone uses a critique to flame or humiliate a writer, they're also going to be off the list, because they're creating an environment that will intimidate *authors* from posting.
A flame, in my book, is a message deliberately sent to offend the recipient. Personal insults, mockery, other comments that have no purpose but to hurt are things that mark a flame. A flame is NOT just a message that offends the recipient or hurts their feelings. It is perfectly possible for an honest critique to hurt the writer's feelings. That's not a flame. Being tactless is also not flaming, although it's also not very considerate and will make your critiques less useful to many authors.
