Batman: Under the Red Hood (originally published with the storyline title "Under the Hood") is a 2005-2006 comic book story arc in the long-running Batman comic series, written by Judd Winick and primarily illustrated by Doug Mahnke. The story is notable for bringing Batman's former Robin sidekick Jason Todd back from the dead, and reinventing him as a deadly "criminal mastermind" known as the Red Hood.

The comic enjoyed decent success in sales and in reception, often being advertised alongside other best-selling Batman stories such as The Long Halloween; 2010 saw the release of the animated adaptation Batman: Under the Red Hood, starring Jensen Ackles, to commercial and critical success. Elements of the storyline have also been more loosely adapted into the 2015 video game Batman: Arkham Knight, the 2018 Titans live-action series, the 2019 animated film Lego DC Batman: Family Matters, and the Batman: The Adventures Continue comics.

This chapter of the massive Batman multimedia franchise has particularly triggered fandom discourse, and has profoundly influenced the contemporary era of Batfamily fandom.

Canon

Batman's second Robin sidekick, Jason Todd, is kidnapped and brutally murdered by Batman's nemesis, the Joker. A few years later, Batman continues to fight crime in Gotham City, now without a child sidekick. A mysterious new upstart calling himself the Red Hood—a criminal alias most famously held years before by the man who became the Joker—targets Batman in a series of expertly coordinated stunts, alluding to personal motivations, while challenging the kingpin Black Mask for control over Gotham's criminal enterprises.

Relationships

The fandom focuses the greatest attention on the canon familial Bruce Wayne & Jason Todd relationship. Other canon relationships such as Bruce Wayne & Dick Grayson and Alfred Pennyworth's relationships with the three, receive peripheral attention. Some covert corners of the fandom explore a taboo Bruce Wayne/Jason Todd ship.

Batjokes shippers have found material in this story, running with Batman's determination to save the Joker.

The Roman Sionis/Jason Todd enemyslash ship originates from their attacks on each other in this storyline, but more so from their interactions in the 2016 rebooted DC Rebirth comics.
