Overview
Like many UTRH fan fictions, this story combines plot elements from the original comic series story arc and from its 2010 animated adaptation.
The story's title references Ilya Repin's 19th-century pain realist painting Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan on 16 November 1581, which been popularly referenced in the fandom's pastiche depictions of the ill-fated relationship of Bruce and Jason.

I love how you wrote the different dynamics like Dick and Bruce versus Alfred and Bruce!seatheoceeanview 2024-07-26

BRUCE FOR FUCK’S SAKEYou have perfectly captured a man who is genuinely trying his best but who’s best can be summed up as “yikes” and who is rightfully disowned by quite literally half his kids He cut off Jason’s finger to save the Joker, saved the Joker from the bomb instead of Jason, verbally disowned Jason in front of his other son (Bruce probably thinks he didn’t mean it like that but what else are people supposed to believe), kept the return of his dead baby brother from Dick and then acted like Dick was the problem, and somehow can’t figure out where he went wrong
Lbr, he probably sleeps with Jason’s charred, dismembered finger under his pillow Gotta give it a little cuddle because it’s the closest he can get to hugging his son by his own design
It’s so baffling how Bruce can genuinely want things to be better SO BADLY and yet make the exact wrong decision at every turn
Ngl, this is one of my fave characterizations of himShinyShammie 2024-07-27
- thank you so much!! i've struggled with characterizing bruce for so long and then i wrote the line "all his life he's been visiting graves" and something clicked into place. i have so much desperate empathy for him and the decisions he's been led to believe are right. it doesn't matter what he wants, it matters what is right, and what he believes to be right is almost always at odds to what he wants. need to smoke with this guy i could fix him let me at him.
