Angel/Cordelia is the het pairing between Cordelia Chase and vampire-with-a-soul Angel in the Buffyverse.

Canon

Fandom

Fanworks pairing Cordelia and Angel did exist before Angel season 1, but it was rare and considered a crack ship as the pairing would never become canonical. Some of the earliest Cangel works were hosted on UCSL, a fic archive dedicated to unconventional and non-canonical pairings. There were also works posted on fanfiction.net during this time.

Cordelia/Angel was a contentious ship when it initially arose in Angel Season 1, and fans of the pairing immediately found themselves in conflict with established Buffy/Angel shippers. Several C/A specific boards were created during this period, including Stranger Things, to provide a haven for fans of the ship.

Cangel was most popular in season 1 and 2 of Angel the Series. Many fans were unhappy with the way the relationship developed in season 3. Still more fans were unhappy with Cordelia's season 4 storyline, which moved away from Cangel, and her dismissal by TPTB after season 4. Others viewed the unsatisfactory canon storylines as an opportunity to write fix-its and canon-divergent fics.

Common Tropes & Storylines

  • Curse, What Curse? PWP is common, but there are also fics where the Curse is an impediment to a sexual relationship and/or Angel loses his soul after a moment of happiness with Cordelia.
  • Angelus/Cordelia is usually dark fic.
  • Many works focus on the Friends to Lovers dynamic. These fics are often fluffier and can include; Angel helping Cordelia during her pregnancy, canon-divergent works where Connor isn't kidnapped and the two raise the baby together.
