Vesemir is a character in The Witcher canon. He was one of the trainers for Geralt of Rivia, Eskel, and Lambert, and is the oldest remaining member of the School of the Wolf.
He is most commonly a supporting character in fanworks.
Canon
Books/Games
Netflix Adaptation
Vesemir was the main character of 2021 anime movie The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.[1]
He appears in Season 2-3 of the Netflix live-action show, played by Kim Bodnia.[2]
Fandom
He is often portrayed as a father-like figure for any or all of the Wolf School Witchers, both in canon-compliant and AU fanworks.
Shipping
Vesemir appears in thousands of Witcher fanworks but is rarely paired up with anyone - he's more often tagged in platonic & relationships with one of his "sons" (Geralt, Eskel, or Lambert), or a developing friendship with Jaskier.
As of October 2023, there are actually almost 150 works in Jaskier/Vesemir[3], and <50 each shipping him with Geralt, Lambert, or Eskel. There are also rarepair ships like Rennes/Vesemir, relying more on canon from the books or games to ship him with Witchers from previous generations.
A small number of fanworks are created specifically in the Nightmare of the Wolf canon and are more likely to center Vesemir in various pairings.
Common Tropes
In modern AU fanfiction, he may have adopted one or more of the three, or served as a foster parent for them.
Example Fanworks
Fanfic
- By Any Other Name by astolat (2017), a Geralt/Emhyr AU with a strong Vesemir POV. Podfic by quietnight and cabloom (2019); Podfic by Vodka112 (2020). Vesemir wasn’t sure what he’d done to deserve any of this.
- Matchmaker series by DancingLassie (2021), a modern AU in which Vesemir is healing from a broken hip, meets local volunteer Jaskier, and tries to get his son Geralt interested.
- The Lone Wolf Dies, But The Pack Survives by stonecoldsilly, (2021). After the sacking of Kaer Morhen, Vesemir faces the legacy of the Wolf School. References Nightmare of the Wolf, an anime movie on Netflix about Vesemir's early life, a prequel to the main Netflix show.
- I left you spinning like tornadoes by provocation (2021), with Filavandrel/Vesemir. Vesemir’s realization nearly bowls him over. Geralt and Jaskier stare at him, respectively concerned and curious, but Vesemir can’t take his eyes off the lute. Informed by Nightmare of the Wolf anime movie.
- The Four Chambers of a Heart by round_robin (2023). A short canon divergence story about leaders from the Wolf (Rennes and Vesemir), Cat (Guxart), and Griffin (Keldar) Witcher schools retiring. Archive-locked.
Podfic
- See above for podfics of By Any Other Name.
- (Podfic) Responsibility and Care by Chantress (2021), with Geralt/Vesemir, Eskel/Vesemir, Lambert/Vesemir, Eskel/Geralt. When Vesemir's role became one of guarding, protecting rather than slaying, he fell into the old traditions even deeper, some of the oldest responsibilities Witchers had—not to the Continent, but to each other. And now, he was the only one to carry them out, but he'd sooner be damned than let what remained of his family down.
- (Podfic) Quen is the Shield Sign by Yuurei (2021). Geralt introduced Vesemir as “an old friend.” Jaskier can’t help but feel that the term “old friend” really means father.
