Tragedy is a genre of fiction based on suffering, and usually focuses on the terrible events that befall the main character of a story[1] Fanworks will sometimes use tragedy to explore characters and how they would change, or not, if effected by harrowing events. It could also be a way to take storylines in a direction that was not fully explored by canon, for example: the villains win, the apocalypse is not avoided, the protagonist loses their loved ones, or they themselves die.
The main difference between tragedy and other sad or angsty stories is that there is no possibility of a happy or hopeful ending.
