Tav is one of the possible player characters in Baldur's Gate III, and usually considered to be the default player choice. There are a wide variety of possible Tavs, as the player can choose their gender, body type, genitalia, race, sub-race and their background origins.
The name Tav is considered the default name for the character, but it is customizable, which leads to a series of options while tagging art based on the character. There is another option for an original character during character selection: The Dark Urge. Although they are not the same character, they can both the Original Player Character.

Popular Tavs
Although Tav is a fully customisable character, some fans choose to create art of or ship other fan's Tavs instead of using or creating their own. This could be because they have not played the game, like the presented dynamics of other fan's art or character creation results. Some fans also like to make their Tavs interact (this can be in fact canon, as Baldur's Gate 3 is a multiplayer, so up to four "Tavs" can actually canonically be in the same party). One such Tav is MAF's Staeve, which has several fanfic and fanart made of him. Another popular Tav is faerunfunkster's Mustard[1]. On January 11th 2024, the Official Larian Studios Twitter (X) account interacted with a Mustard tweet, stating to a fan that "mustard was always real".[2] Tendermiasma's Tav, Clover[3][4] is also quite well known.
Pairings
Tav is part of the Juggernaut ship for Baldur's Gate III, together with Astarion: Astarion/Tav. The second most popular pairing featuring Tav is with Gale: Gale/Tav.
Due to different tags being used, the Astarion/Tav pairing might also be present in the following pairings: Astarion/Female Original Character, Astarion/Reader, Astarion/Original Male Character, Astarion/Original Character, Astarion/Charname and Astarion/You. With the Astarion/Charname, the "Charname" part of the tag can be kept or changed to the custom name of the Tav. There are also Astarion/M!Tav and Astarion/F!Tav variations.
In certain situations the pairing might be tagged incorrectly as Astarion/The Dark Urge, but it is important to note that some authors consider The Dark Urge to be Tav, although canonically these are not the same character, due to the ability to customize their physical appearance.
