Wyll Ravengard, also known as the Blade of Frontiers, is a character in Baldur's Gate III. Wyll is a noble monster hunter and part of the tadpoled companions. He is a warlock by default. He is also a romance option for the player character.

Canon

Wyll is positioned as the fifth companion able to be found, and is introduced as part of an unescapable quest. He is noble, not just by blood, but by spirit, and will disapprove of mean spirited or evil choices. An early game quest related to Karlach will define his look for the rest of the game.

Wyll will not join or leave the party if innocents are slaughtered by the player during Act 1, more precisely, the Tieflings.

Fandom

Common Tropes

  • Heroic deeds: Heroic tropes are commonly used with Wyll, due to his personality and action. Several prince charming qualities are also associated with him.

Controversies

There are several points which are considered controversial by fans, both related to canon and fan behaviour. These include:

  • Wyll being the character with the least amount of recorded dialogue and interaction
  • Fans constantly excluding him from fanworks where all other companions are present, many times even replacing Halsin (a non tadpoled companion) with him. See Baldur's Village (Stardew Valley Mod) for a concrete example
  • Wyll and/or his VA being side-lined during marketing
  • Wyll and Karlach being missing from the official Larian figurine line-up
  • Wyll sharing his concept art pages in the official art book with Mizora, wtih Mizora having more concept art than Wyll
  • Wyll's dialogue intro being bugged to just "Well met" for an entire year, whilst all the other characters were getting new dialogues
  • A dev implying that the devs get to work on the content they want to, during a big fandom campaign to try to bring attention to the Wyll bugs/lack of content (citation needed)

  • Another Path by Asidian, an example with heroic tropes featuring Astarion/Wyll, Astarion has spent two hundred years waiting for a hero to come. It isn't the foolish sort of idle dreaming that one reads about in adventure tales, no – he doesn't moon about in picturesque arched windows, pressing his hand to his chest and sighing. But he does hope sometimes, furtive and distantly yearning, in the same way he still prays to gods who never listen, every now and again. (2024)
  • A Dance For Two by xXMilkyTeaXx, AFAB Tav (Reader)/Wyll, You love Wyll and respect his want for a fairytale romance, but it is so fun to watch him flush. Wyll on the other hand? Well, he can only take so much... (2023)
  • Growing Pains by ushauz, second of a series featuring Karlach/Wyll, Mizora had made a big show of transforming Wyll. Of course she had. Mizora was one of the nastiest devils Karlach had the misfortune of meeting, and she was a cambion to boot, so she also had a complex. The past several years apparently had been taking out that complex on Wyll. So of course there was an evil black pit that consumed Wyll before turning him into a devil. It had to be performative or what was the point. Like Zariel would give Mizora a pat on the head and tell her she was a real special devil or something. Ugh. (2023)
  • The One That Got a Thay: A Guide on Breaking Free from Your Father and Removing Illithid Parasites by cilceon, female Turge/Wyll, Mizora pulled, Wyll’s soul ripping through each layer of the wretched planes. The soggy, bone-strewn, disease-ridden swampland of the third layer, Minauros, came next. Tavaris could feel the decay seeping into Wyll – rotting him from the inside out, only to be crudely reformed as he plunged into Phlegethos. (...) 2023
  • Seductive Literature by fiveforchibis, Gale/Wyll, Wyll's got an admirer. Of the authorial variety it would seem. An erotic novel staring The Blade of Avernus himself is making the rounds in Baldur's Gate and beyond. Wyll initially picks up the story out of morbid curiosity, but soon finds himself falling in love with both the tale, and the author. But who could this Zephyr Tenson be? And where did he get such an accurate account of their adventure? (2024)
  • a portion of night by Moorishflower, Lae'zel/Wyll, During the party, amidst the celebrations and the drinking and the merriment, Lae'zel slips away to find Wyll. If you choose not to romance Lae'zel, there's a chance that, at the tiefling party, she'll try to seek satisfaction with one of the other party members instead. If you ask her how it went the next morning, her response about Wyll is that he "only wanted to talk." This is that scene. (2023)
