Talk:Metafic
I think some people also use "metafic" to mean fanfic of other people's fanfic -- can anyone verify that usage?--Penknife 19:03, 10 October 2008 (UTC)
metafic in canon examples
Would something like Galaxy Quest fit here? It's a veiled parody of Star Trek: The Original Series fandom/phenomenon and breaks the fourth wall all over the place.
What about "Wormhole X-Treme" for Stargate SG-1?--æthel 22:33, 22 August 2010 (UTC)
Authorfic
I'm trying to figure out what this is, and if it is related to metafic (or is a self-insertion, or what). I see a lot of references to it in Fanthropology posts. --MPH (talk) 02:03, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
- I started a page on Authorfic to the best of my abilities; it seems to be a rather nebulous term. It certainly does seem (at least in some senses of the term) to refer to a type of metafic, but the page could use some more sources. Would you happen to still have links to any of the Fanthropology posts? --sparc 06:22, 10 March 2017 (UTC)
Cart before the horse?
Just wondering why we have the canon examples of metafic after the fanfic examples. Most of the other entries that have both put the canon first.--Marcus Rowland (talk) 12:40, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
- Since nobody commented I've swapped them. --Marcus Rowland (talk) 20:29, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
Is a separate Supernatural section necessary?
What the title says, basically. I'd suggest moving Supernatural in with the other canon metafic, something like e.g.
- Supernatural has several examples of metafic:
- The Fourth Wall breaking episodes where fandom is explored through the character of Becky.
- The Changing Channels episode that placed Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester in various television shows.
- The French Mistake episode of Supernatural where the characters of Sam Winchester and Dean Winchester literally fall through the fourth wall into an alternate reality in which they are presumed to be the lead actors working on a television show called Supernatural.
any thoughts? --Marcus Rowland (talk) 20:32, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Also, these are all a bit vague - episode titles and dates would be useful. --Marcus Rowland (talk) 20:34, 10 July 2015 (UTC)
- Dividing all fandoms into Supernatural and not-Supernatural does seem more than a bit one-sided. I suspect it's simply an artifact of the interests/knowledge of whoever started the page originally. (Time to change it, in other words.) --Greer Watson (talk) 05:13, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
- OK, since nobody seems to be saying "don't do it" I'll sort this out.--Marcus Rowland (talk) 20:38, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

Mary Renault & Forever Knight
You might have a look at the articles on the ITOWverse and the Forever Knight Wars. I think they probably fit the metafic concept. --Greer Watson (talk) 22:13, 12 July 2015 (UTC)
Restructuring
I started a new section, and wanted to have a discussion about possibly restructing this page a little bit. At the moment, this page is mainly just two big lists of canon and fanfic examples. I think it would be better to address different tropes in the main body of the page, such as Characters reading Fanfic and then split the examples into similar categories. Is that even possible when it seems that some of the examples are very meta! and don't fit neatly into subtropes?
I'm also wondering if we need such a long list of canon examples when Fanlore's focus is on fandom. Some of the examples that are there may also be better suited to breaking the fourth wall - for example, comics characters that are aware they are fictional. Should these examples be moved to the Fourth Wall page that now exists? --Auntags (talk) 22:55, 30 October 2021 (UTC)
Some movies could be added to the canon list, right?
There are two movies, which I can think of as pertinent to the canon section. One tells the story of an author who discovers that the character in her book is real and is about to die in the last book she intends to write, but he wants to stop it. There's also another, I remember the title, Ruby Spark where an author creates his perfect girlfriend and she takes life until everything goes wrong. It would be interesting if someone could add these two movies to the canon list -- Ellakbhesse (talk) 16:49, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
