Talk:Emo Culture and Fandom

Emo isn't a fannish term, so I'm not sure this page as written belongs on Fanlore. (It seems more appropriate for Wikipedia.) The third definition hints that it might be a fandom, but doesn't say anything about the fandom. We do have fandom pages on Bandom. It's my understanding that music subcultures fall outside the scope of Fanlore (see Fanlore:What Fanlore Is Not), unless the goal is to document fanworks created by Emo fans outside of Bandom? --aethel (talk) 19:17, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
- It can be fleshed out so that there's more of a focus on how the emo subculture has overlapped with fandom. From about 2003-ish elements of the emo scene were appearing in fanfics and fanart, produced for fandoms outside Bandom. (I feel like this trend didn't last long, and they were mostly badfics)
- Then there's how we use the term emo in fandom. There's Emoporn - that term appeared in 2006, so after the emo music scene. Ao3 has an Emo tag. I feel like there are different definitions of emo within fandom as well. Emo has been used to parody characters who are considered emotionally unstable or whiney. (Like, Emo Kylo Ren twitter acc) But looking through fics on Ao3, this term seems to be used differently there.
- It's not a fandom specific term (or subculture), but it has definitely appeared in fandom and I am in favour of keeping this page. Maybe we could rename it? Or merge with Emo Culture? Or do both? (As well as adding fandom specific content)--Auntags (talk) 22:39, 29 June 2020 (UTC)
- Hm, so maybe something like Emo in Fandom, Emo in Fanworks (like Punks in Fanworks), or Emo Culture and Fandom? With sections for all the subtopics you mentioned? I vaguely remember some emo!Spock chatter in 2009.--aethel (talk) 18:18, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- I'd lean toward Emo Culture and Fandom as I think that title will allow this page to cover Emo fans and the type of fanworks they created. I'd also make both Emo and Emo Culture redirects to this page. Here's a proposed structure for this page:
- What was the emo subculture --style, music (and its overlap with Bandom)
- Impact on fandom -- subsections for fic and art
- Modern usage of the tag/term Emo (specifically in fandom)
- Thoughts? I'm probably missing loads of possible topics as I have never heard of emo!Spock!!! --Auntags (talk) 22:04, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
- We definitely a page for Emo-inspired things, because look at Emo!Spock. We need this somewhere. I have no opinion on whether it's "Emo" or "Emo Culture" or "Emo Culture and Fandom" or something else. --Elf (talk) 01:11, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
- My vote is for Emo Culture and Fandom. --MPH (talk) 01:15, 4 July 2020 (UTC)
