Isn't the Coffee shop au a more common name for this trope? I know it started as a Barista AU, but I dont think many people refer to this trope by that name any more. Thoughts on changing the page name? --Soyalex (talk) 22:34, 20 November 2014 (UTC)

I vote to change it to Coffee Shop AU. --MPH (talk) 22:41, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
Second vote to change it to Coffee Shop AU as well. --Harpie (talk) 04:05, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Changed! --MPH (talk) 04:33, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

You're going to think I'm nuts, but it's been bothering me, so I did some investigating. I have a half-written fanfic from August 2011 that's titled "barrista AU" and in Oct 2011 Grande Soy Triple Dirty Chai by friskaz was published, still bearing barrista!AU name. So it had to change to coffeeshop AU sometime in 2012 (because in 2013 it's been coffeeshop au everywhere), but WHEN?!? When did the fandom start using coffeeshop au instead of barista!AU? I lived through this, I should know this? Can anyone remember? --Alex (talk) 13:35, 12 December 2014 (UTC)

Not sure actually. I don't remember seeing any stories titled "Barrista AU" (or if I did, it was rarely) - I've only noticed the Coffee Shop & Bakery AUs. I think it got more popular as Coffee Shop/Bakery AUs in the Avengers Movieverse/MCU are fairly common (or it seems like it is anyway).--Harpie (talk) 01:46, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
FWIW, the AO3 tag Barista AU was created on 2010-01-03, barista!au was created on 2012-03-29, and users have created a few "Barista Character X" tags in 2014. Coffeeshop AU was created on 2012-07-14, coffee shop!AU was created on 2012-02-13, coffee shop AU was created on 2012-01-17, coffeeshop!au was created on 2011-01-01--æþel (talk) 05:05, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
OMG Aethel, this is incredibly helpful in creating a timeline, and it makes a lot of sense when you factor in what Harpie says! Thanks to both of you for this! I'll do some more digging to see if I can pinpoint this even more, but if not, those dates will work great! --Alex (talk) 06:26, 13 December 2014 (UTC)

Timeline of popularity?

This article as an uncited claim that the trope's popularity was widespread by 2008, but I'm having trouble digging up a citation for that. Does anyone have suggestions for a citation for this claim, or ideas of how to go about demonstrating it? And if not, I'm thinking we might want to remove this bit of the article, but I wanted to check in with other editors before that, of course! - Fandomgeographies (talk) 01:12, 5 February 2019 (UTC)

I don't know if this was the source whoever wrote that 2008 claim was thinking of, but the fanfiction.net publish date numbers for fic with "coffee", "shop", and "AU" in the summary on FFN do hold up?

I don't know if it indicates widespread popularity, but there are quite a few "Barista" fics posted on Livejournal from 2008, examples here, here, here and here, the majority of them seem to be in popslash fandom. (Also I found this one from 2003, I don't if that is helpful, but I thought I would include it) -- Kingstoken (talk) 01:46, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, y'all! Do we feel like these pieces of info support the claim enough for me to add in a footnote for citation? I'm thinking about softening the claim a little bit, to say that by the end of the aughts, the trope was popular across a wide range of fandoms - I'm personally not sure if we have enough evidence to pinpoint 2008 as a watershed year. - Fandomgeographies (talk) 03:33, 5 February 2019 (UTC)
Yeah I think that that rephasing is good! - Hoopla (talk) 04:18, 6 February 2019 (UTC)
